nakedzen
I've never been able to gel with LP's. I think they look great but have always felt cramped to play. Maybe it's the short scale. But now I've decided to try one myself to get over the love/hate relationship. Sandwitch body, 44mm mahogany back, 10mm flame maple plus 10mm figured mahogany top. Multilam neck, haven't decided the woods yet. Maybe padauk and maple? Handwound humbuckers made by myself. I intend to carve the body so that the flamed maple shows through like in the template.
nakedzen
3D render of the idea so far.
nakedzen
Templates ready, mahogany blank glued. Just ordered the top. The flame maple I already had.

Love the idea! A touch of flame maple showing like a flirt? Perfect. 64mm thickness, though... Are you going to be chambering it? - Jam
nakedzen
Probably not going to make it that thick, just approximate measurements, not too sure at the moment how the final thicknesses will be. Roughly aiming to carved top 49mm at sides, 63mm to center. Chambered.
nakedzen
Change of plans, slightly. I think I'll do two of these, this one will have the ziricote veneer I've been keeping for some project. And baritone scale neck. Veneer has a couple cracks on it, we'll see how it goes. Forgot to take a pic of the glue-up.
nakedzen
Glue-up semi-successful, had a couple small splinters. Glued them back with CA. Also received the top wood for the carved top. It looks so good, I hope I will do it justice. After some cleaning
nakedzen
A layer of britetone to shield the top from cracking/splinters. Seems a bit prone to that. I'll sand it back once done with the cavities etc.
nakedzen
Got some glue-ups done for the carved top LP. Control cavity, back roundover and jack hole done for the jr. Was able to save two pieces large enough for a tele neck from the quilt mahogany. Woo
nakedzen
Did some winding today. Went pretty well, got it right on the second try. First wind ended up in the trash. Was able to fit maybe 5000 winds on it, so probably pretty low output. DC resistance is 4k. The crazy contraption. Thankfully the drill adjusts down to 600 rpm. henrim
Lovely winding setup I like the “what ever get’s the job done” attitude. I have tendency to spend too much time building tools and jigs that I only use once. I would like to try winding. Where do you buy your wire? Last week I was in the neighborhood and visited Uraltone in Helsinki to buy some screws and stuff but they don’t have pickup wire in stock right now.
nakedzen
This is fancy compared to the first couple humbuckers! Those I did with just a hand drill. I got the wire (42 AWG) from Stewmac when I bought my first kit. Here's one I found which is tons cheaper than stewmac. https://brocott.co.uk/0-050mm-44-awg-enamelled-copper-magnet-wire-solderable-250g/
henrim
Thanks. I try to avoid ordering from US and UK (after brexit). Because taxes and shipping costs and all the hassle with customs. I’ll see what I can find within EU when I’m ready to start experimenting. Because I reckon it will take some time to get the process perfected. I have (good/bad) habit to buy material in advance. Just in case it’s needed some day. Anyway there is substantial investment in all the parts for pickups. Maybe a kit like yours would be a good way to get started after all. nakedzen
Yeah the stewmac kit was great for getting started, it comes with some pretty good instructions that come in handy with later builds too, figurin out which wire was supposed to go where etc. Nebula Belgium has been a good store to buy from, can't remember if they have wire though.
nakedzen
Here! https://www.nebulabelgium.com/collections/winding-wire/products/solderable-enamelled-copper-winding-wire Most parts can be found on aliexpress for half price or less. But Nebula has pretty good prices.

henrim
That's a king size sandwich for sure! How much thickness you have there? Btw. thanks for the Nebula link. Orderer some wire and stuff. Most likely way more than I ever need. I'm going to wind a four pole dulcimer pickup for starters. Then I also got some hardware for humbuckers too.
nakedzen
Great to hear! It'll be LPC spec, 49mm at the edge, 63mm at the center. We'll see how heavy that ends up!

nakedzen
About 2" at side (varies), 2 1/2" at center if I recall corretly. Someone can pitch in if this is wrong?

I believe it’s correct and 2 1/2” definitely sounds like a number I have heard before. I guess I never really thought it in millimeters before.
nakedzen
Couple qs honduran mahogany necks roughed out on the bandsaw. Cleaned up the carve top sides a bit.
