BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 i'm thinking about building a neck out of poplar, as the only other wood that is available to me is pine........ should i? and how badly would it affect the sound? Quote
westhemann Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 are you sure you can't find maple or mahogany or something else? poplar is really not a good choice for a neck Quote
BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Posted June 16, 2004 poplar is all i can get.... poplar or pine Quote
westhemann Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 why can't you order on the internet?niether of those woods is going to make a good neck Quote
BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Posted June 16, 2004 im in central ohio.... i dont have the cash for expensive woods Quote
BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Posted June 16, 2004 this is my first build BTW Quote
westhemann Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 im in central ohio.... i dont have the cash for expensive woods $30 will get you enough maple for a neck from a local hardwood store Quote
BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Posted June 16, 2004 another problem, nobody around here has maple..... that's why i'm asking poplar or pine Quote
BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Posted June 16, 2004 do you have a messenger program so we can discuss this a little more easily? Quote
ThePlague Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 www.stewmac.com you can get a maple neck blank for like $30. Quote
BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Posted June 16, 2004 i just dont have 30 bux thats all....... i'm 14 and have no job....... Quote
ThePlague Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 how are you planning on building the rest of the guitar with $14? Quote
westhemann Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 you can make it,but it probably will not last.chances are it will twist beyond playability in a very short time maybe you could buy a really cheap neck...if you don't have $30 for wood then you are not going to have the money for frets, sanding blocks, truss rod, fingerboard,or anythingelse Quote
BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Posted June 16, 2004 lol im age 14 and have no job sorry if that was hard to understand....... i have everything but the neck...... and i also have about 10 bux.......... Quote
BlackHawk2025 Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Posted June 16, 2004 i'm having the guy at the music stor fret it for me.... i'm good friends with him so hell do it for free........ i dunno about sanding blocks though......... Quote
Dr. Jabsco Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 It would be better to use a decent wood so that you dont waist your friends time on the freting. (friends dont let friends build poplar necks) and if you dont have enough money, just rob a liquer store.. I promis it will work Quote
toddler68 Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 im in central ohio.... i dont have the cash for expensive woods Where in central Ohio? If it's Columbus, there's a guy in Grove City selling a bunch of tiger maple on eBay. Might give him a shot. Check out his other auctions. He's got other stuff too. No, I am NOT him. Grove City wood guy Might be worth a shot just to contact the guy and see if he's got anything not so figured that he'd sell for real cheap. Quote
hy_dro66 Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 My advice is to mow a few lawns to make enough cash to get a decent neck wood. Quote
Dr. Jabsco Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 for real! its not that hard to come up with some extra money if you are willing to put in a little bit of work. Quote
