what i think is the way you do it, requires you to strip the laquer/ clearcoat, whatever, so its only th paint thats visble, then you maske off the whole top, with a few layers of masking tape, then draw the lines (with a ruler!), and then using an exacto-knife or craft knifecut out the piece of masking tape that you drew the boundries of. then peel it off, and paint that part with a few coats of whatever color you want and then take of the masking tape, and respray the laquer.

btw this is not a 1-4 day project, with drying time for all, your guitar could be unusuable for upward of 3 weeks. also im not an expert in this i just remember reading up on this a while back.
