How does one do a multi color paint job?

Recommended Posts

I am new to refinishing, I picked up a aria pro flying v from my local pawn shop for real cheap. Somebody decided to paint it with spray paint...and there was serious orange peel and peeling paint. I have since removed all the hardware and stripped all paint and finish down to the wood..and have followed the instructions on reranch and on the project guitar tutorials....my question is how does one go about painting a multi color paint job....i was considering either polka dots ala randy rhoads or half white half black ala michael schenker......it would seem logical to go with my white color first on the whole guitar and then go clear, and then mask the part i dont want painted black and then apply my black and then clear...again...my thought process to use clear after my white is to avoid any color dissolving or blending....my worry is sanding after my black paint since i will have paints with different levels....and then spraying my clear.....i guess im not sure how to do this....ive looked around..any help would be greatly appreciated........i didnt pay much for this...and if i mess up..ill just strip and start it over again......Im just not sure if im going about this the wrong way or what.....please help......Thanks.

Just paint the black over the white, no need to clear in between. Use good quality masking tape, not the cheap stuff, and press it down well to get a nice line. It may go a little "fuzzy", so use some 600-800 grit to smooth it off prior to clearing the whole lot.

cool, Thank for the hints....im gonna hit my local hobby shop.... i just recently got a digital camera and ill get some pics either good or bad...when i get it painted....im really having fun with this...I.got the guitar for only 60 bucks plenty of fret, with a floyd rose on it grover tuners...pickups are not too bad...it was really bad with caked on paint on the neck....that dryed into folds. and stuff it was horrible...i should have taken some pictures before...it looks a ton better even with just the wood....its and alder body with not much grain...if it had nice grain...i would thought about staining...but since its plain....ill go for paint....some kid had sticker of some band cradle of crap or filth or something.....that i quickly took off.....this guitar was a 1985 model....from the serial....
