  1. A few pics from today. Drilling the tuner holes, drilling for fretboard alignment pins and gluing the fretboard on. Ziricote 26.5" scale fretboard. This will go on the 7 string quilted body i posted last week.
  2. Yup, thats all it is. Just veneer glued to EMGs.
  3. Took the tape off, scraped and sanded the sides clean. IT always makes a huge difference at this point.
  4. I do use the acetone initially. I buy it in gallons so its easier to just use that instead of using alcohol. To me it seems to cut the dye better. Here is a pic of what i got done today.
  5. So my process for that finish isnt really anything spectacular. I start by doing a dark wash coat of dye on the quilt. I dont use straight black. I use a super dark shade of the color its going to be. In this case, it was almost a midnight blue/ purple dye coat. I let it dry and sanded it back. Then i did an even more concentrated dye. But here is the small difference. I mix my alcohol dyes with acetone instead of alcohol. So after the second application, i get a clean cloth and soak it in acetone. I use the clean cloth with acetone and wipe down the dye. This evens it out and you can control how much you take off, instead of having to sand it. This has always helped me get a really even wash coat. Then after that i sealed it with UV sealer. Sanded to 800. Then I apply my kandy color. This is "Deep Purple" by Kustom shop. I sprayed one even coat across the whole thing, which is what you see in the middle. I let dry for about a minute. Then, with the same gun, i added the burst with the exact same color. I know it looks like an entirely different color, but these kandy colors are so concentrated, it really changes the color with every coat. Nothing fancy. The pic i posted actually doesnt even have clear coat on it yet.
  6. I'll type it up soon! But yes, it actually is the same exact color, just an extra 2 coats on the burst. The center is just 1 coat.
  7. Just a sneak peek of what i did today. I should have taken pics but i was on a mission.
  8. Thanks Scotty! I use a the old method of drilling one side half way through, then i stick a piece of MDF to my drill press table, drill a hole with the same size bit into the MDF and push that drill bit into the hole and use it as a guide pin.
  9. Finally got around to taking some progress pics! Nothing too fancy here. Just some fretting and some pre carving rituals .
  10. Is that how many its been? i lost track a long time ago. Ive been thinking about how i should take more progress pics these days as well as instructional/ documentary videos.
  11. Thanks sir scott! Yes, its a macassar ebony highlight. The fretboard is also mac ebony.
  12. Thanks man! I'm really surprised that the Paduak SS was the one everybody liked the most. To me it was the most simple build ive done in a long time. It does look great and play great though. Here is a sneak peek of the Black limba EXP.
  13. Thanks! I finished it with danish oil and carnuba wax. Thanks man. It actually isnt very heavy. It weighs 7.4lbs.
  14. Yes sir. It makes it so much easier to get an even color. Here is the Paduak SS almost ready. This thing is a beast!
  15. I only used a wash coat of dark purple dye originally, then did the rest with gradual coats of kandy color. Then i sanded the edge to shape and it left a clear line. Here are some better pics.
  16. A couple of updates. I got the 7 string buffed and ready for hardware. The white is actually the reflection of the clouds. The purple SS also got its last coats of clear as well.
  17. Great work. That is one of the best looking Vs ive ever seen.
  18. No sir, this one was the tamo ash one i posted over a year ago. Longest build of my entire career! I had a lot going on last year and it really took its toll on me. Thank you sir! Some of the other builds i have going on are even cooler, i just havent gotten around to them.
  19. Been getting a lot done lately. All little stuff though. But the ziricote EXP is ready for sanding. The 7 string EXP got its final buff today. The pic is pre level and buff.
  20. Yup, its a winner for sure! The finish will be purple burst. The hardware will be mixed gold and black hipshot. I remember that one like it was yesterday. An amazing guitar! The fretboard is mac ebony.
