  1. i like how theres all this debate, and the guitar was obviously very carefully thought out, and yet people rant about the builder, and complain. Hmmm, I dunno. I wouldn't buy one. But i'd certainly look at it and go "AH." Wes, your comment was pure art.
  2. looks like he took a photo of something else, and cropped it to fit that shape.
  3. I have done a small amount of Tung oil finishing, and was wondering if anyone knows of any extensive guides on the internet for it. Thanks, Kirk
  4. Me thinks: Sharp tail? if i owned that i'd leave it home, not because it would be ugly, but because if i took it somewhere i'd be afraid of chipping or breaking the legs. Cool idea though, truly. I drew one up that looked like a hand once, i called it "The Finger Bass."
  5. I figure why wait any longer to get started. I realize that I may have wanted to route the neck pocket before rough cut, however I'm using the rest of the quilt to laminate on the headstock, and i wanted a nice looking piece for that. I've devised some supports from other wood to hold the routers edges when i route the neck pocket. Why do you leave it rough in those areas dave?
  6. Yeah, Gallery Hardwoods rock. I just got some wood from them a week ago, and its gorgeous, and perfect (and better) than my expectations.
  7. I have got the body of my first bass cut and sanded to size...EXCEPT near the neck pocket. I was wondering if anyone knew any ways I could get in there, I still have about 1/2" or so until I reach template size/final shape in these spots. You can see sorta where I'm talking about in the last pic. All comments and suggestions are welcome ESPECIALLY for my neck problem...any quick solutions would be great, seeings how im STUCk!
  8. I don't know about bit size, but I think you'd be better off getting dice somewhere local. I'm sure it would be much MUCH cheaper, and no shipping costs.
  9. Yeah its still a full tree. I have to cut it down soon as i fix MY chainsaw. Other than that, I'll give it another couple of years and make some geetars!
  10. are you sure you're looking at the upside down? The only back pictures are the 2nd and 3rd one on the first post... Other than that, the reverse just looks like a lefty.
  11. Your cut actuallu doesnt look too bad. Maybe I'm mistaken as I can't see everything in the picture, but it looks pretty good. Are you going to sand the edge on the carve top, or are you going to cut another layer, or are you going to leave it? haha 1 year for every inch of thickness you say? So i've got it at about 24" x 32" so thats......40 years? shucks...
  12. Oh ohkay, I was worried you were going to be trying to cut the body out around a neck thats already attached My bad. Thats some insane walnut for cutting it out of your tree. I've got some ash drying in my garage....I dunno how thats gonna turn out.
  13. if you have the pics uploaded to the web somewheres, you can click the IMG button in the post and link to them from there. Otherwise put a link to the pictures in the post. Carvin makes good stuff. Question: you glued the neck on before you cut out the body?
  14. im with weezerboy, i like 2 the best
  15. mdw - for your reference, I have the PRS Factory DVD. Here's the finish process: They rub the color stain into the wood with a rag. They spray 2 or 3 coats of a (the tour guy says polyester, though i've never heard of a polyester finish myself) color on it, followed by a sealer coat. They then sand through the surface down until theres only a couple mm's of finish on it. They then spray a top coat of color on it. Spray a couple of coats of clear coat finish on. They wet sand with 320 grit sandpaper until the surface "looks like a sheet of glass." Buff out all tiny imperfections. If that's too much, Drak knows a book that he used to learn to finish, that you might look into.
  16. Yeah I like the PRS-esque carve on the top. very stylish. what are you doing for the neck?
  17. ...maybe thats why he doesn't use power tools...anymore
  18. I do that anyway for all woods because I don't like to suffocate. Is it toxic?
  19. I got a neck blank in yesterday thats 90% wenge. Its just large enough for two necks, but by itself it weighs 18 lbs. Based on looking at it, each neck takes up like 1/3 of the total mass. So 5 lbs for the neck, minus fretboard and tuners...
  20. I know you didn't write the Gorilla Glue label, but perhaps you can determine the point of only dampening one surface? EDIT: I know the glue is based on a chemical reaction, however, it seems that maybe that would cause some uneven(ness).?
  21. I recently routed the truss rod into one of my neck blanks. at the heel end, the route is approximately 1mm off to the right, and at the nut its approximately 1 mm off to the left. Will this affect anything? Or am I just being paranoid because I spent $150 on wood?
  22. drift....in what sense of the word. I used the jig and it worked fine. Nice and straight. I'm at my budget for spending on the project I'm on right now, so I can't really look into a new router base. But thanks anyway.
  23. You can use polyurethane glue but make sure its clamped TIGHT. Because most polyurethanes foam as they cure, which if it is not clamped securely in place, could cause the joint to spread leaving things like seams and nasty glue lines...
