  1. To be honest i was too lazy to cut the veneer to perfect size so it was hit and hope, but the fact the top is flat apart from the arm rest I thought I'd give it a go. When it came out of the bag it had nicely curled around the edges with no cracking apart from the split in the horns. I flattened the veneer for a week before using - spray water & glycerine, brown paper drying. The two pieces were tapes together, but nothing else to keep it moving about. Had the day off work today so did some more. Before routing I cut through the veneer with a blade, wacked in the trem inserts, only one slip with the router where the trem block sits. Routed & roughed out the back shape, 1/4" roundover, massive beer gut contour, aanj, with more contouring for wide stretches & a little thumb contour & a subtle one where it sits on your leg Some stains arrived from Axminster so going have a play with them over the weekend
  2. New build, trying a Veneer for the first time Ash blank, jigsawed out, template routed, then new tool for sanding Vacuum storage bags, 3 for £6 off the bay. Plug in the Hoover, leave overnight trimmed off the edges
  3. Hollander have a look at the most comprehensive trem tuning guide you will ever see in your life from Rich Harris - http://www.ibanezrules.com/tech/setup/index.htm most of the stuff written is for the better quality Ibanez trems - edge, lo-pro, edge -pro but still applicable for all floyd styles. Once you have dismissed all loose locking parts the prob is usually bad knife edges & wobbly posts. Read his guides, knife edges should be 'butter knife' sharp & check the shape of the 'v' in the pivot posts that nothing binds. Loose posts in their inserts hurt tuning, on a trs there are not locking, so wrap some ptfe tape on the threads. One of the reasons original floyds held their tuning so well was the pivot screws were just that, screws striaght into the wood - no movement. & as mentioned earlier if everything is almost spot on, chapstick lube gets it the rest of the way.
  4. ok I'll bite, seeing as I've only built 2 bodys from scratch, the rest have been cut and shut jobs left hand RG copy body, single hum strat copy, jackson dinky, cheap strat copy and RG750 body?, another single hum strat copy, ibanez gio body
  5. cheers DJ just bought one, as I've got a spare flame neck blank that was the free replacement for the warped one I used on this build Not done much recently, been playing - but reswirled my GMC build last week
  6. i'm a big fan of camo but it looks a little homemade, needs something? definition, but with thinner lines than my mspaint skills
  7. the yellow pink green and black attack - thanks john Ibanez jem copy, passion and warfare colours Basswood body, flame maple 1st neck attempt Dimarzio Breed pickups Standard ibanez cosmo parts 1shot signpainters paint http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q70/amrt/PAW/garden4.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q70/amrt/PAW/colour6.jpg http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q70/amrt/PAW/garden5.jpg build thread http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=40206 quick sound clip
  8. I did a sabre style as one of my first cut & shuts. Made it from an alder strat body but didn't thin the edges quite as much as I thought it would be too light. Sounds 80's metal with a duncan full shred in it
  9. few more pics, yesterdays one with the 10mp camera really didn't capture the colours so heres a few with the old 4mp one soldering iron turned out so, might be able to give it a spin later
  10. cheers DJ, yeh I was lucky Jaden had some 2nd hand dimarzios - I hate paying more for pickups than the rest of the guitar costs. They are breeds, which I've never tried before so figured I'd give them a go. I buy most of my trems from the US ebay guys who split up ibanez. 2k was good, got 4 coats out of one can. Sealing -believe it or not all I did was give it a can of white primer which is the base to the swirl, but didn't drill any holes until after it was swirled
  11. thanks guys Reamer, I just had a look & all it says on the sheet is clear polystyrene. 1st attempt didn't got too well, so bought a new router bit (ie a sharp one) set it on the slowest speed & it made little shaving just like mahogany. I made the templates from a body I that Jaden on here made
  12. Nearly done, just waiting for a new soldering iron to turn up, Thanks to Jaden for the pickups & strap & the green knobs from Brians shop
  13. yeh but what will that mean? does shielding only reduce electromagnetic interference? (can you tell I haven't got a clue what I'm talking about ) if I'm wired up correctly do i need shielding or will it hum like crazy?
  14. Sprayed it yesterday, dry in an hour or so, (was quite cool yesterday) crystal clear, cured overnight, I love this 2k stuff. The can had good flow, great spray fan - recomended. I'm going to use this all the time in the future, I can stand the month cure time from my previous clear. Only used one can at £13, so the other one is going to go on reswirling my GMC copy. Going to level & polish, then put it together next week. One question, I know nothing about wiring and was going to make some clear cavity covers because I've got a massive 4'x6' sheet left over from making the pickguard. What happens with shielding if I want clear covers & unshielded cavitys to show the swirl?
  15. DJ no, almost all swirls are done on a white basecoat to get the pop on the thin fluro colours. give it a go it fun
  16. Yep, fretboard a wide enough for a seven, although the inlays are sometimes not centered, so make yourself a center line on the top of the pyramid & trim the rest. Usually has extra top & bottom for a floyd shelf, or 3 extra frets if you want. Looks like a Nate Perle job? I prob would have bought one in the past but the ridges on the claw were always rough & he never cut the back of the grip either. looks good, get building it.
  17. yep that the stuff, the 3 previous swirls I'd done with plasticote pots - about 3 quid each, but I had never seen any fluoescent enamels before, plus no pro swirler will ever tell you what paints they use. So when I stumbled on them on ebay, I googled 1shot and came up with the link above. You are right about the amount of paint, but for a 100 quid it should last for the next 300 guitars.
  18. thanks, just with a paintbrush & artist acrylics Off US ebay, from one of the guys that part out old ibanez, was cheap when the pound was strong
  19. Off ebay, did a chromeboy copy & used stuff from specialistpaints.com 2k clear in a can just like the Alsa stuff. Dry in an hour cured in a day. Did a search on the bay earlier & found this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2K-AEROSOL-SPRAY-CAN...A1%7C240%3A1318 Going to try a few cans, its got the bit you stick in the base to mix the clear & hardner. Not cheap but I spend the same in halfords clear & use twice as many cans - and have to wait a month
  20. I didn't know, it never said in the ebay auction, but the guys on jemsite thought it was a cheap ibanez gio gsa60. Its like a cross between a sabre & a radius, you can see what i removed to make it more like a radius.
  21. Ok, abandon all taste from here on in. I really wanted an old style messy ATD type swirl like the original below Headstock, I make no excuses for having the logo on there, the ibanez tick is one of my fav bits so much so that I wouldn't buy an ibanez prestige, because it doesn't have it, plus I'm not trying to sell them or pass them off..stick logo on, swirl it, peel logo off.. Looks a bit washed out with the flash in this one natural light notice there are a few holes drilled in it as possible, less chance off anything nasty(apart from the swirl!)happening when you dip it in water. Normal swirl procedures, 80ltr dustbin, add a 400g box of borax, disolved leave for half an hour. Paints are 1shot signwriters fluorescent enamel. Very slightly diluted with their reducer about 5%, but depends on the colour, some spread out more on the water that others. Its just getting the balance between the colour not spreading enough, if its too thick it clumps or too thin for weak colour. Dip it in slowly move it about if you want, but always keep going down or you'll recoat the previous bit. Once its fully submerged (dont touch the sides) I use a hair dryer to blow the excess to the sides of the bin & clear a clean space to pull it out. Got some fluro cocktail sticks coming from ebay for the side dots which I always forgetto do. Clear should turn up soon, 2k in spray cans, I'm down with 24h curing rather than months after I tried it a few months back.
  22. I swirled the Jem yesterday, I'll stick some pics up in a min.. its just what I wanted - completely tastless
  23. looking good Kenny, is the angle grinder for the heal contour? 1st time I tried it was on my JS copy, make sure your use the screw in handle if its got one, go really gently, practice, it just chews wood away so fast & try to keep smooth flowing motions. Have fun & be careful.
  24. thanks reamer, if you got the fluro inlays like mine they are clear plastic with the colour on the bottom, then wrapped at the back with a white coating. his other inlays are either solid plastic or clear with a sticky backing - mostly the mirror ones. Brian has a great tutorial on the home page for putting them in http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/3dinlay1.htm have fun & post some pics of your progress
