  1. sjaguar13, If you go to Stew-Mac, check out the Tone Pros. bridge page. It has pics of their TuneOmatics in chrome and nickel side by side. That may help you make a comparison.
  2. Hands off, Wes. She's mine. (Although I'm sure my wife would disagree.) Personally, I like Mr. FURIOUS!!!
  3. Yes, it appears this is merely an issue of semantics. I think my question was answered ad nauseum. I doubt I'll scour the globe specifically looking for 'true' quartersawn lumber just to satisfy a diagram in a magazine. I will trust my instincts and start cutting this weekend. Thanks all for the lively volleys. I hope to post some pics in the near future. Wish me luck.
  4. Who started this infernal thread anyway?
  5. daddy ray, sure! send to oneal_todd@hotmail.com. thanks again
  6. Daddy ray, I would be very interested in seeing pics of your glue press. When you learn how to post the pics, tell me as I am a knucklehead in that department.
  7. Thanks for the wood lesson fellas. I suspected as much (flatsawn rotated = quartersawn) but I needed confirmation from some advanced users. How about the 5 layer lamination, am I taking any chances with 5 versus 3?
  8. I am going to do my first laminated neck with maple-purpleheart-maple-purpleheart-maple. This may be a dumb question but should the grain run parallel to the fretboard or perpendicular?
  9. Dude! That is the most gorgeous neck I have ever seen. I definitely want to see pics when you are finished. Fantastic work!
  10. Jivin, I was just on the Stew-Mac site the other day and they have a beautiful detailed drawing of both versions of the TonePros TOM's. Just navigate to the TonePros TuneOmatic bridge section. It gives you the string spread, saddle arc, post centers and all that and under the SPECS tab they have the great drawing with dimensions. Check here: Stew-Mac TonePros Hope this helps.
  11. I knew it could be done! I REALLY want to see pics when you get around to it. There is hope for my Mocking-S yet. With vinegar, all things are possible. btw, what kind of veneer did you use? I'm looking to do curly maple.
  12. Excellent pics. Man that lower horn is vicious!!
  13. CoolJay, that is some kickass contrast. Take a pic of that thing outside with some natural light. BTW i think I have the exact same carpet.
  14. it's the devil eating corn on the cob... only no corn.
  15. I really like the pattern of lacewood and wondered if it can safely be used as the primary outside layers in a laminated neck. eg. substitute for mahogany or maple. How does it take stain and finish? How does radiusing it (neck profile) affect the pattern of the grain? Anyone with experience?
  16. Yeah I tried test bending some beech veneer (dry even) over the Mockingbird and it's a subtle enough curve that I think just a little steam will do the trick. The compound curve is even more pronounced than the S. I'm sure if anyone has a Sabre they'd like to veneer, it would be a breeze. I'd still like to try the rice wine for good measure, push the envelope a little on something more radical. I'll post pics of my veneer job when my never-ending basement remodel is done and I have a shop again!
  17. From the sounds of things, this complicated veneering thing doesn't appear to be something a newbie like me should be attempting. Although the sake soaking technique intrigues me. Maybe I'll just paint it the original black color.
  18. Yeah, sorry about the double post. I got an error sending the first time so I tried again. Thanks all for the links and tips.
  19. I read Scott Rosenberger's very thorough description of how to apply a flame top to a body. I am wondering if I can do this with veneer across 2 dimensions (compound curve). I have this old Mockingbird I thought I'd sacrafice as my first mod and I tried to approximate the general curve of my Ibanez S. After getting the general topography of the body, the wood (laminated basswood or alder) didn't seem very appealing grain wise. So, I thought it might be cool to throw a nice flame veneer on top. I have seen production S models with a cool transparent blue finish (only on a 7-string version) over flame maple. I read that the top is only about 1/16th inch veneer and wondered how the factory does it. Any clue?
