  1. People DEFINATLY use quarter sawn maple for necks, it makes the most stable necks. I wasnt aware of quilting just being flamed maple on its side, is that true?
  2. Ca you put a light coat on ebony to even out the colour and still get the depth and shine of a 2000 + sanded ebony board?
  3. Hey just wondering can you make a neck out of quilted maple? Considering you can out of flamed I dont see why not? I've just never seen it done, as long as you lam it up the figure instability shouldnt be a problem, and if you get a deep figure the pattern wont be too distorted by carving... Cheers
  4. Yeah I would not build an instrument for any one at your own cost, its too easy for them to just say hey forget it, half way through. Non refundable 50% final value deposit or 100% materials cost deposit (which ever is greater) before building starts.
  5. Hey is this what you used? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FIEBINGS-EDGE-KOTE-B...%3A1%7C294%3A50
  6. If you have 45 degree end grain that is RIFT sawn, not flat sawn. The end grain lines of a flat sawn peice of wood would all be horizontal. Flat sawn is fine for necks its what Fender has used for god knows how long. To glue up two peices of rift sawn wood for a neck make it so the grain lines mirror image each other and you will be fine. Like so... (the grain lines of the maple are in red) /////|||\\\\\ 3 carbon fibre rods is a bit extreme, how will you get one between the truss rod? If you glue it up properly you will only need a truss rod (for a 6 string guitar), and may be one rod either side for a bass.
  7. Hey how is possible to glue thin bookmatched tops together with enough force for a gapless line, but so that you dont bow them? Is it easier to glue one side to the body then butt the other up against it and apply both downwards and sideways pressure at the same time? (I imagine tightening clamps in two dimensions may be a problem?) or rip the body in two, and glue each side of the top to a body peice, get the centre line flat and then glue the two sides together? Cheers
  8. Love the S shape behind the bridge, and squiggle on the right of the handle above the bridge pup, very cool design.
  9. Hey theres been a lot of talk recently about planes, jointers vs planes etc and the general consensus seems to be that you should definately learn how to use and set up your own hand plane in addition to any power tools you have. So is there any good tutorials around for choosing hand planes and how to set up and use them? Or a really good book on wood working that includes hand tools like planes and spokeshaves? I'm relatively new to building but I'de like to do things right Cheers Neil
  10. So maple can have a lot of discolouration in it, like mineral stains, heart wood, spalting etc, and the best tops for finishing seem to be very clean white, but how much do these colours affect finishing, like can you bleach them off, or cover them up? Say a top was an even off brown, if you did a tiger eye finish would it look as good as a finish that was done on a clean white top? Cheers
  11. Did they mean to include the other stuff, like did you actually ask them whether it was a mistake or not?
  12. Hey thanks, good to know Any one else ordered from them?
  13. Hey I came across these guys on the net, http://www.dguitarparts.com/ has any one heard of them or used them? I want to put in an order with them but I'de like to check if they are a reputable seller Cheers guys Neil
  14. Its not the hole that causes the feedback, its the lack of body mass and thinness of guitar top, because thin tops like you get on acoustics vibrate a lot more you will get more feedback through the pickups. Active or passive shouldnt make a difference.
  15. Melvyn Hiscock's book says about 3/8" or 9.5 mm after the last fret slot, but thats probably pre fretting, since its already fretted you'll probably get away with just chopping that bit off.
  16. Thanks for all the help guys, since its not nitro I'm just going to leave it alone
  17. Hey thanks for the replies guys Is this finish definatly going to be nitro? Is there any specific nail varnish, or will any work, or just get some wipe on nitro to repair? Cheers
  18. Tonepros make the only good 7 string TOM that I know of. The rest are crappy chinese imports.
  19. Measurments inc binding. Nut width = 48.4mm width across 1st fret = 49.68mm width across 12th fret = 61.3mm width across last fret = 67.9mm fretboard length = 20 9/16 "
  20. Hey can any one tell me whether the damage at this neck joint is just in the finish or whether the actual joint has cracked and moved (to me it looks like its just in the finish but I dont know). Also can any one tell me what the finish is, nitro or poly etc, there is definatly some colour in the clear coat, if I tried to repair it by adding more nitro to melt the crack will I have to match the colour thats in the finish, or will clear be fine? Cheers
