  1. Probably not your thing, but I'm selling a Boss Heavy Metal pedal for about 20GBP.
  2. That would make sense, thanks Wes. In actuality the guitar sounds pretty damn good! I think the quality of the pickup is making up for any shortfall in tone thanks to the plywood.
  3. I've just acquired a late 80's overseas Kramer that's been "5150"d relatively well. One thing that baffles me is that it's quite obviously got a plywood body. My questions are: is this tonal death and how widespread is/was the practice of using plywood? The gtr actually has a really nice DiMarzio pickup (single slanted bridge humbucker) and an FRII that while a bit worn is still quite serviceable, so it's not a dead loss. I think I'll use it for refinishing practice, just wondered if any Kramer fans could tell me if the DiMarzio was original and if there was anywhere online I could accurately date the guitar - serial is SD4020.
  4. Thanks a lot for that Drak, helpful as always. Even going on what you've said there, I think I'd pay the extra money to have it professionally boxed. Although if there's demand, it sounds like that would make a good article for PG.
  5. Thanks chap. I've just bought an unfinished maple neck, so it's nearing time for me to make a decision. I've got some satin laquer which I used on my last neck, but this is a maple fingerboard, and I'm wondering how satin finish will feel to play... Does anyone else have any experience in this?
  6. I never knew that! That's great advice, I'm going to look into that. Mark - thanks a lot, checking that out too. You guys rawk!
  7. That's a beautiful guitar! Hmmmm I've been promising myself a really nice acoustic, either a Taylor or Takamine. I'm talking to a few other folks at the moment (one of whom has a JCM 800 4211 combo) but I'll bear it in mind. Still no idea how I'd ship something this big and heavy overseas - anyone sent amps across the pond before? How do you pack it, and who do you go with?
  8. That's a great site, is that! It's the master volume (the third volume if you like) that has the pull-out functionality. I was told by my amp tech that it cuts out two of the four power amp valves which results in an overdrive sound. Again, if any of you know different, please shout up! Also, the logo is the Fender ® without tail, which makes it a post 1974 model, so I've revised the ad accordingly.
  9. Wow that sounds like a lot... I can imagine you can pick one of these up cheaper in the US, what with Fender being an American company and so on. This is a very clean example, though, for it's age and it sounds amazing. It's just so clear and loud - you can turn it way up and you can't tell it's switched on - it's that quiet! A fantastic bit of hand-wired engineering. But I'm sure I don't have to tell you guys...
  10. The volume knob, when pulled out, takes out half the power amp valves (I think) so it breaks up earlier - I will be happy to stand corrected on this! As far as my research goes, this feature was on the early 70's models. What kind of Takamine? The amp was valued at 600GBP, although I realise I might not get that realistically, so what's that in USD these days?
  11. Ha! Nice try! You made one fatal mistake though, you assumed I could read.
  12. Thanks wes! Any other questions, shout up!
  13. Yup, plus the wiring diagrams that come with EMGS are childs play.
  14. I have taken the difficult decision to sell my silver face Fender Twin Reverb. I've had it for about 5 years and it's not let me down once. However, my style and sound have changed (now play through an ENGL Screamer 50) so it's sadly surplus to requirements. For those of you unfamiliar, it's a 2x12, two channel 100W combo with reverb and vibrato. An absolute classic and rightly so. This is a VERY clean example - has original tiltback legs and castors, I place it circa 1974 - 1980. It's the one with the pull out master volume knob. No rips or tears in the covering or grill, despite having been gigged extensively by myself. The speakers are not original - at some point they've been swapped out for some HUGE HH jobs - they sound amazing though, it would be a small job to replace then with Jensens or whatever it came with originally. It's just been completely serviced and re-valved by a professional amp tech, so it's in the prime of it's life. Comes with a dust cover and original footswitch (VERY rare). I've had it valued by my local guitar shop, but please make me an offer, or I'll trade it for something interesting - try me! I'd like a JCM800 combo in good condition, for example, or a Parker Fly. But anything of a similar value would be fun. I don't think I'm prepared to ship this overseas - it weighs a flipping ton! Plus, I can imagine you'd want to hear it in action, so this is probably more of interest to UK people. I'm in York, North Yorkshire, England. Lots more pics here
  15. They're search engine bots indexing the pages. It's an option with this software to list them in the active user lists as guests.
  16. Ha ha, that sounds like the worst Commodore 64 music ever
  17. I used tru-oil on my guitar, and it's very good. Very thin, but I put about 20 coats on over the course of a month or two and it's a really nice finish. I've noticed it's continued to darken the wood long after I applied it, and it gets glossier the more your arm rubs against the body etc. It's really nice! It's available in the UK and it's cheap too.
  18. Ah but wouldn't i need to get some kind of spray gun for that? That's a bit out of my league, I was meaning primarily rattle cans - sorry I should have been more clear.
  19. Hello folks, I'm about to start my first ever refinish, so I've been reading up on all the great resources here at PG. What I'm struggling to find however, is a good place to buy paint and clear gloss in the UK, and what brands people would recommend, given the availability over here. I'd really appreciate any experience or info you could give me.
  20. Nothing dodgy, it's what's called a search engine spider, which goes round the net indexing pages for Google's searches.
  21. What was/is your favourite ever guitar, and why? Because it played so well, looked great, or was a piece of crap that had sentimental value? Do you still have it? My favourite ever guitar is my 02 that I built myself last year - nothing comes close to being my "perfect guitar" because obviously I specced it myself and I know every nook and cranny of it. Before that though, my favourite was a metallic burgundy Charvel (don't laugh!) - set neck, pair of jackson humbuckers, Jackson FR thing, it just had the lowest action of any guitar I've ever had and it just screamed. Of course, then it became mighty unfashionable to play pointy-headstock guitars, so it had to go. Shame really.
  22. I've been told that oiled necks (as opposed to lacquered/varnished necks) are risky to use in the UK due to our damper climate giving them a greater likelihood of warping. Do any UK builders or players have any experience of this, or evidence to the contrary? Thanks!
