  1. Ive got 3 playable basses, and one soon to be playable bass. no guitars in my house!
  2. I built a few pine guitars and necks, just for practice. I didnt fit them and play them, so i cant tell you about the sound. But if you plan on sanding it, get a ton of paper, because the sap in the pine gets stuck in the grits and wears the paper out real quick. Same with a drum sander, but i just use a wire brush to scrape it off of that, and it works fine. once sanded down and all, pine looks as good as alder (IMO) but, im not sure about finishing and so fourth.
  3. well, your going to be doing some radius sanding, so dont wear your arm out yet! different woods require different finishes. naturally oily woods like rosewood, ebony, bocote and so fourth dont need to be finished, just sanded real good. maple, on the otherhad does need a finishing to protect the fingerboard. Im not sure what most people use for the finishing tho, im sure you could find somthing in some tourtials.
  4. yup, the other day when this fourm was down, I checked out guitarbuild's fourms... and NOTHING goin on there! good site, but pritty lame fourms.
  5. unfortunatly they dont make very many bass templates, ive only ever been able to find them for jazz and P bass. but its not to hard to make your own templates.
  6. Well, total for a body and componants, probley about 250 maybe less maybe more, depends on what you want. for 'binding' them togeather, all ya need is titebond wood glue, get it at any local hardware store. you should check out all of the tourtials on the main www.projectguitar.com site, that will anwser most of your questions.
  7. MY GOD, that stuff looks ALIVE, and electric. a little too electric for my likings tho
  8. hmm... i hope not! i planned on using some for my next project well ill look around for the post too, thanks for the heads up
  9. Just about anything you buy from stewmac will be good qualtie. But warmoth makes a bit better, and its worth the cash.
  10. nah, i think we should give cam a break. At least hes tryin. But seriously, camcool if you want a nice top try some camphor burl. That stuff is beutiful, and its not way expensive. just build somthin! hell even if its pine, get some experience in.
  11. http://www5.ocn.ne.jp/~dgb/index_e.htm look around on here
  12. You could carve out the mouth and drill some holes, make the controls in the mouth so you cant see the knobs. ps that bass your stripping, what do you plan to do with the body?
  13. hey camcool, I have this PERFECT goncalo alves crotch top thats 1/4 thick, air dried to 12% humidity, perfectly quartersawn, and HIGHLY figured And Ill sell it for $15.92 plus shipping, handling fee, and of course a magician fee.. seeing as he pulled it out of his top hat. :
  14. Marcus Miller, I have read indepth about his sig. 5 string. Lovley bass really. http://www.marcusmiller.com/special_mm5.ht...d08ddb32265d0ae That is a link to the marcus miller site, and that is about his coustom bass, and it has all the specs. Are you building an exact replica? and are you using the leo quan badass 2 bridge? I was thinking about building that exact bass, in a 4 string model, but decided to save that for later.
  15. Just draw up your own body shape while looking at pictures. Its what I did, then got some Luuan left over from a shed i built and traced it on, then cut it out with a scroll saw, sanded it, and put some braces on it so it wouldnt break. The great thing about building your own guitar, is that its just that, your own. You dont have to make it JUST LIKE the regular teles you buy in a store.. thats lame. be original. BUT, if you pay me 15 bucks and shipping, I will make you a template thats NOT laser cut, and NOT perfect, but WILL sufice for your first guitar.
  16. searches often do that, you just have to mess with all the settings and try about 5 times to weild any anwsers. Im not complaining, but it does get fusterating. guitarbuild.com has full blues for a les paul i think.
  17. No, you wont need an angle. But remember the sanding and radiusing will take some off of you fret board. The nut is usually glued behind the fretboard. anything else? -Dylan
  18. Looks aint nothing unless your comfortable and you have some good sounds to back it up. I really like the 'once nice' look, for instance jaco pastouriou's bass. Its an old fender jazz with a sunburst, it had tons of chips, no pickguard, the pickguard holes wernt filled, but it sounded great! experenced players shouldnt care how it looks, but only how it plays.
  19. for a crotch goncalo alves, hell i would take a banana split from the rear.
  20. hehe, eaither that or whoring your body out to the likes of michale jackson
  21. My parents, but I only play the banjo when i go over to my uncles house, hes teachin me. The project after the next one im doing will be a cross between a bass and a bango, bassically a bass with a banjo body, and electric pickups.
