  1. first off, i'd like to congratulate pete on the most excellent work and research done... i do have a couple of questions: 1. why isn't the original thread a sticky? 2. would it be ok (albeit very time consuming) to link-archive the most important aspects/developments in the thread in this one? 3. has the mixed mode (present in some sustainiac systems, i believe) been discussed on the thread? once again, great work pete!
  2. Hi, came across an eBay seller offering this wood relatively cheap... i haven't heard of it before, so i was wondering what it could be used for, and if a first build using it is advisable (solid body). thanks for any help.
  3. Hi from Germany, i might be going to Richmond, BC next week. AFAIK, there are a fair amount of builders here from canada, so I was just wondering if someone could tell me if i could pick up some decent figured maple for tops (not too expensive - student on a budget) in the region? I've never been to Canada before, and don't know much about richmond either, so don't laugh. please thanks for any help.
  4. I've read about this fretless guitar dude named Ned Evett who has glass fretboards on almost all his working instruments. what exactly is a glass fretboard? is it an actual sheet of glass over the fretboard? if yes, how is it strengthened and/or protected against chipping /cracking/smashing? and how exactly would you install something of the sort?
  5. Hi, new on this forum and currently refurbishing a Squier strat to a semi-fretless w. sustainer and veneer top as my first PG. After pulling the frets (the first five are still in), i filled them in with wood filler, and am now considerinng epoxying the (rosewood) fretboard from the fifth fret down. first question: is this necessary? i though it would be neat to smoothen down the board completely, and possibly make up for some of the sustain loss. also, the epoxy would be good for compensating for some of the less level fret lines (they aren't perfectly flat). I am fluent in both english and german, but i'm not sure which epoxy i should use, and what it's called in german (native english speaker). any tips/help would be greatly appreciated. thanks! will post a complete photo report once i'm done...
  6. hi, AFAIK, selmer amps increase greatly in value with time. i wouldn't make any changes to that if i were you. just baby it and have it checked out by a tube amp pro every now and then. i could be wrong on this, but this is what i'Ve read on the net and in some magazines.
  7. i'm stuck with the same problem; i shielded my strat cavity before painting. the reason with me was, i wasn't planning to refuirbish it at that point of time. don't want to hijack this thread; am converting a squier strat into a fretless w. sustainer, maple top and sunburst, original colour was white, and now i'm trying to figure out how i'm going to do that burst without isolating the cavity. on idea i've had was blocking up the cavity with a piece of card/plastic *slightly* smaller than the pickguard; i.e., practically the same size, but reduced at the edges, so that unpainted areas are less likely to be seen. this baby is going to get a veneer laminated pickguard too, in all probability. please comment on this method; the noob needs to know. :S
  8. don't kill the noob... er... huh?
  9. you mean antonio stradivari, possibly? stratovarius is a power metal band from finland.
  10. hi there, i'm in germany, and though i'm extremely fluent, i still don't know some odd words... what exactly would you call the de-waxed shellac (zinnser seal coat) in nederlands? i can probably figure out the german word then, or ask a bilingual friend to translate... cheers!
  11. hi, noob here on my first guitar refurbishing attempt. once i sand down to the sealer, should i take off the sealer if i want to veneer the top? really not sure what to do here. as far as i know, i should strip the sealer off...
  12. Then you won't like the 10 string I'm starting. ← darn, i can't wait. that's some beautiful work there. how does it sound? i dream to build an extended range touch-style instrument, buy have no experience whatsoever in building guitars... excepting the squier strat modification i'm working on (fretless after 5th fret - sustainer - veneer "top" - whole new paint job) and this no-name bass i've taken apart totally to mod to fretless, possibly one more string, individual piezo pickups per string with individual preamplification and stereo panning controls, with a sandwiched top and back. also, i'm a student, so getting my hands on machinery is difficult. not impossible, but difficult. i suppose you've built a lot by now... any tips for a noob who wants a 10-12 string stick clone?
  13. Hi from Germany, I was surfing ebay.de and ran into a very attractive piece of spalted beech. I'm not all that familiar with guitar woods, and am looking for something for a first project, which will probably be a bass project, using the marleaux-pagelli bass as reference. I'm not aware of too many manufacturers using beech as wood for the body. Googling around led me to hagstrom, who seem to use it. I'd be grateful for any tips regarding this. Thanks!
  14. thanks! i concur. i think i'll build a tele or something
  15. a coat of carbon/glass.... do you mean some sort of finishing material? if you have an example, i'd be really grateful if you could post it.... thanx!!!
  16. A wooden bridge is something i'd probably want too, but this would rule out fine adjustments for intonation setting. i could probably survive without them (i always go out of tune ), but it would be a nice touch. the advantage would be that the piezos would be easier to build in...
  17. thanks for the information! i figured that the neck would have to be reinforced better somehow.... since the neck thickness should be limited as far as possible. i wonder if 2 or 3 truss rods would be necessary for this. any ideas? i checked out the stick enterprises homepage again, i have an idea of what you mean by 90° frets. the standard frets look quite normal though... one string bridges would be necessary here, i believe ABM makes them. i think piezos in the bridge could be a good option too. the pickups would most definitely be split, bass and guitar. can'T see myself getting extended pickups with ease. this would also simplify stereo output. i'm going to think about this a little more seriously. except for the truss rod problem it doesn't sound THAT impossible... maybe i should start with a simpler instrument first. any opinions?
  18. Absolute noob on this forum (1st post!) wit a hypothetical question.... I'm not necessarily planning to do this as my first project... but what would be the factors to be taken into consideration when building an extended range bass/guitar, touch style instrument (e.g. warr/chapman knockoff) etc.? has anybody done this? where do the differences come in, and how would one go about building, e.g., monster fretboards for, say, 8-9 string basses or 12-string bass/guitar combinations? like i said, i have no experience with building whatsoever, just some basic repairs. i just thought the information could be interesting, i'd probably appreciate the instruments even more. if anyone DOES believe i could go ahead with it anyway, do post a no-frills method here! i would honestly doubt it though. thanx.
