  1. drill holes where you want the magnets placed just deep enough for the two parts then put a spot of glue (no idea what type) on each exposed surface then postion the scratchplate (you might want to use some spacers to make it easier) and press down when the glue is cured lift it off it will only go back into that one position you might want to slightly counter sink the holes to make it easier to locatte the holes. I'd also cover the guitar surface around the holes in something that can't adhere to the glue maybe wax? That's how i'd do it but i'm no expert
  2. Alembics are pretty much just plywood..... discuss. Other than its sofness I can't see a reason for not using pine after all we have been using softwoods on acoustic sound boards or hundreds of years! why put a top on it pine has pretty cool grain! I'd use pine for bodies add a little stove and you'd have a little sauna!
  3. I'm totally confused now! I was partially joking about the chicken wire but it seems like its a tried and tested so the first thing you do is spray the graduation from gold to silver/white then you lay the wire over. then you do what ever burst you want over the top remove the wire and bobs your mothers brother. It won't be ontop but it will look exactly the same. i think that was what syxxstrings meant.
  4. Cool guitar. Ry Cooder plays something like this doesn't he? For a raised effect just slap on some chicken wire! rather than transparencies what about printable transfer paper?
  5. Can't help feeling someones name is going to be mentioned soon and the whole thread will explode into furious debate!
  6. If you just want the effect I'm sure someone (i think possibly setch) said if you pore hot water on a plastic (acrylic?) pick guard then clamp a piece of wood to it you end up with the woodgrain impressed onto the plastic. especially with ash which has quite an open grain. I could be wrong it does happen occasionally! I really like your pickguard shape with the exception of the little piece at the top, it's not hideous or anything but i think it goes to close to the edge of the guitar to not follow the curve. also perhaps keeping the gap round the bridge the same for both sections of the pickguard would look even classier. does that make sense?
  7. Why is it the more drunk you are the more knowledgable you become but the less able to convey this acquired knowledge you appear?
  8. Oh dude I'm right there with you! I was merely suggesting that it might not be terrible to work with if you have allergies! I agree 110% pump me full of whatever works that's wahat I say!
  9. I know that but as the woodchips can be used to make a tea and it can easy coughs and arthritis it would suggest it was probably not to bad on the allergy front compared to a big ole block of cocobolo. You could be allergic, potentially, to any wood so perhaps we shouldn't use wood anymore! Didn't mean to upset you mattia I'll try and be more careful in the future
  10. What about lignum vitae Rick thats has medicinal qualities so perhaps you'd be alright with that. You might be allergic to the weight of the guitar though!
  11. so we should keep our leather suite in it's case?
  12. yeah I can totally see where you are coming from one good reason for having small hands! Lest Paul said that about the SG didn't he?
  13. I was being clever with the spring remark(admitedly not very ). I was trying to suggest in the post that a high modulus of elasticity on it's own is not enough of an indication of it's useful ness as a neck wood I'd freely admit however I seem to have not manage to convey that in any way! I was looking at birch just yesterday in a wood fair. what I saw of it it didn't strike me as an exciting wood, unless it's flamed, for a guitar top. Are you painting it? did i miss that in the posts? My only opinion on woods for guitars is that Local woods should be used wherever possible especially when perfectly good alternatives to the common ones are available! And they are also more interesting to me when something a bit unusual is used.
  14. I have one! A little ebay special in the pipeline when the money blockage is removed! It's a little further on than this now though!
  15. Wes I don't play fast up there That would make a lot of sense and was kinda why i was asking. I'll need to get faster so I can see for myself Muzz yeah it's really the bevels I don't get. I wasn't trying to question the need for fret access just the ways some people go about getting it especially when I'm sure alot of people like me don't actually need it. I still want a V although I'd have to go with a gibson not a fan of pointy points but that's a whole other discussion.
  16. I always stand when playing electrics They don't sit right for me when i play sitting. And I don't really feel like i'm stretching! I guess maybe it's a space thing asmuch as a stretch thing becasuse I have smaller hands I can get in closer without the body getting in the way?
  17. Springy and Bendy refer to its reactions under forces A high Modulus of elasticity means it can be deformed and returned to shape (much like a spring ) It could very well be strong aswell! (but what sort of strength? Tensile? Shear? Compression?) I know nothing about using birch just thought i'd clear up a bit of mechanics!
  18. I was thinking the other day and now I have recovered I have a topic i'd like to discuss. I have a PRS santana SE and a strat copy aswell as acoustics (non cutaway). Now out of all the guitars the only one that would appear to make a consession to upper fret access is the PRS but I was playing it the other day and I realised That my hand never actually sits in the area of the body that has been removed in the aid of access, for any of the frets. And then I though to meself (this is when it started getting painful) none of my guitars including my acoustics are uncomortable to play anywhere on the neck. What really made me wonder was that I have tiny hands i mean really small so it's not because I have a super human reach or anything like that. It seems to me that some people go all out for improved fret access where it's not necessary. what are other peoples views on this is do you suffer from a huge lack of fret access? or is it a bit of a con?
  19. Thinking it over i may retract previous statement!
  20. I'm not expert or anything and i'm certainly not saying you are wrong setch i may be missing something but a straight trussrod channel would not be a good idea because you surely need to force the rod to act against the string pull?
  21. I preferred the first sketch to be honest it wasn't perfect but i preferred the splayed horns. I don't dislike the re-sketches but i though the first one was slightly more original looking.
  22. I'm sure i saw a guitar set into a table in a magazine once. so the front of the cguitar (strat i think) was flush with the table top which was of a contrasting wood!
  23. Forget the smell of wood spray it with lynx and watch the girls come flocking!
  24. I personally feel that having photos of your guitars with young ladies should be banned as it creates a disadvantage to everybody else! But if you really want to share my email address is.....
  25. I like it! when you say carve i'm guessing you mean going over the sketch with a knife to prevent the stain bleeding through?
