  1. I did not know that! I don't know any henrys' either! it's not as weird a nickname as Zachary for Alex though!
  2. for half rounds you could get regular frets and grind off the tangs! sorry i couldn't resist but seriously i think stainless steel rods semi circular profile would be fairly easy to get hold of, maybe try the phone book? also why not the stick it's a different shape but surely the fret requirments are the same?
  3. Hello Bart All the body constructions you mention have been done here i think with the exception of the through neck but its the same pricipal! do a search in the forum would be my advice that would give you some ideas of what is possible. As for suppliers etc i'd do a search on here aswell. teisco guitars i have no knowledge to give you an answer about their pricing There are a few books you could get melvyn hiscocks "make your own electric guitar" tells you how to design your own unique guitar and build it. thats the one most oft quoted and it is very good!\ hope it helps
  4. doug this isn't my thread i was just adding my opinion and how i thought about doing them. you could tie the frets on sitar style! lol
  5. mickgaurd your mechanical idea could work i'd use a bike brake cable and a little lever i think a similar device once existed and you could attach it to pots on effects pedals and amps and stuff which would also fun!
  6. It's supposed to be fun?! Totally agree on the accuracy front my thoughts were on using flat pieces of stainless steel into a flat bottomed slot held with some superglue or eopxy or even araldite for the impossible to refret finish haha but they would mainly be held by the wood itself! as for rods i can't think of a way of doing it without relying on glue. josh.
  7. I like your thinking perhellion! want to start a private club? I agree that bar frets from the past arent really worthwhile but now glues are alot better I think the idea has some merits hardened sainless steel comes to mind. You only need to look at parker guitars produce extremely "old fashioned" instruments construction wise but use extremely modern materials. And there are other companies who obviously see some merits in the idea of using rods. I hope you realise you have opened up a can of worms! Swedish luthier this is in no way a slight on you if i could build guitars like yours i'd be a happy man!
  8. how about clamping them like you'd clamp sound hole pickup onto an acoustic? that would work prettywell look pretty slick if done well and would be completely reversable.
  9. perfectly natural! but the only tool you are likely to find in asda will be serving you!
  10. Asda is not equivalent to Walmart it just a crap tesco!
  11. http://www.epoxy-resins.co.uk/Shop/pigment.html did a wee search this sort of stuff is what i mean although i'm not sure you'd need 2.5 kilos (you can probably get repair packs somewhere thats enough for a small boat!) for one fretboard. you may have to go into mass production! I don't know about alterning the strength with other substances but you won't with this stuff.
  12. not "Chandlers" A chandlers is any marine/boat supplies place just like you know what to expect from a butcher here endeth the lesson i'm sure there are other ways of dying it i just thought that it might be an idea possible not explored anywhere on here.
  13. I'd like to say a few things. Firstly welcome protex Secondly I did not question your knowledge I just thought the post was a bit rude (and i'm guilty of this too) really no biggy i'm sorry Thirdly you really should say hello in the announcements I did it's near the top and it's called "hello" all the cool kids are doing it now. Fourthly at the end of it all this there is one problem solved HAPPY DAYS.
  14. an make a sugggestion? have you cut the headstock shape yet? because if you havent. It's your guitar obviously but i think the headstock and body knit together better this way.
  15. I've never done this for a guitar but I've fixed a sailing boats gel coat which is just coloured epoxy and your local chandlers would have that possibly or could order it in for you. Someone else will know of something else no doubt but it's worth consideration!
  16. bloody hell! instant hendrix/zappa replica! I think rick500 may have the answer, out of the house. A safe big enough to old a number of guitars and withstand a serious attack would weight a tonne (oops metric) and probably need structural improvement to your home I mean it would have to be properly untippable fire proof unmovable in any way you're talking a serious piece of metal /concrete casting there! you'd also have to get it in to your home!
  17. http://www.rockandrollweekend.com/Nigel%20-%20top.jpg nigel tufnel obviously had the same question but nobody could answer it!
  18. well either way i think the question has been answered! I still say buy the book though!
  19. lespauls have an angled neck i would guess this is what is making you think the bridge is tilted backwards. There are threads relating to bridge placement that are very recent i'd recommend doing a search on the forum but you would typically measure from the fret side of the nut along the high e string to the saddle this should be the scale length but make sure you have some adjustment in the bridge the low e path will be slightly longer I think setch said recently that the bass side of the bridge is "a bit" further away from the nut. Just to make things more confusing gibson state a funny scale length which isn't actually the true scale length because they compensate for the stretch of the strings when they are fretted. so the fret placements don't actually match the scale length exactly but thats only really important if you are working on a gibson i'd guess. Someone will say it so i may aswell say it first have you baught yourself Melvyn hiscocks book "make your own electric guitar? and if you have check out page 14 to 16. if you haven't i'd really recommend someone here even has two copies! edited for clarity....
  20. the wooden block beside the board is what you make with the router then you make the board with the block.
  21. If its just to protect from women why not put your guitar building skills to good use and make a nice wooden cupboard with a lock? make sure you leave enough room to expand the collection or possibly to hide in? does it have to be a attractive? because a flight case might do? then if the need to flee arises you can give it a hefty push and jump on (need to get one with wheels or you'll look pretty stupid!) and if you wanted to spend money how about getting wall mounted individual guitar boxes with toughened glass forntage that would look ace and you'd be able to see your beautiful guitars (possibly a bit to hard rock cafe/planet holywood!) despite the bad humour i think these a three pretty good ideas and with the exception of the the latter probably a bit cheaper than a dedicated guitar/gun vault although i do think the gun vault is a good idea!) If it were me i'd want to see them I'd go with glass fornted wall cases if i had any valuable guitar that is!
  22. If it was me I'd never end up putting them away and as soon as i did I'd lose all the keys or forget the combination!
