  1. I just finished routing for the pickups. it was a pain. To make the template I set 5 fences up (top,2 bottom parts, and two sides.) All in all, so far so good
  2. And the neck the inlays are brazilian mahogany. as is the skunk stripe
  3. The neck pocket IS square (well it is tapered), I made the pocket square rather than made the neck rounded
  4. I just got it together to take a few pictures of my project, its an ash body and a onepiece maple neck. As of yet I still have to finish it (aniline dyes) rout for the pickups and do a setup and nut. I'm pretty happy with it and I'd love any feedback I hope the image works.... if not its on my website
  5. it seems like youd kind of have to keep a few elements to have the guitar comfortable and balanced (in look and feel)
  6. Thank you all! I've heard that controls might drain tone (I'm not even sure what all of the tone controls do anyway?)
  7. I want to do this also, but on an ash body. I'm planning to fill the grain with an epoxy. Would this work if I first shot a clear coat of Deft Laquer?
  8. I just made one of those things--- It worked great
  9. Do i need to have a heatsink for soldering my electric guitar pickups? I need to desolder a prewired pickguard and resolder the the pickups and components into my guitar. Thanks in advance
  10. Try these maybe drafting dots good luck
  11. Stop me if I'm horribly wrong. I made a miter box for the the neck with a track that holds the neck and moves back and forth through a channel that has a blade guide. I'll cut the slots with a coping saw that is guided across the channel and was run across a wetstone to make it narrower. I tried a sample fret on a scrap and it went in fairly easily and wouldn't budge out, I'm hoping this will work. I plan to hammer in the frets with a small rubber mallet starting from one end to the other. Thanks
  12. It shouldn't be a problem to do it freehand without any support, i just finished doing my ash body on my first guitar and did it with a 1/4 inch roundover bit. I didn't have any tearout, just some slight burning. This was my first time (besides practicing a little on scrap) and I was really happy about the result. Oh yeah and I'm only 14.
  13. It'd really make that carving stand out if you found a way to accent the edges like woodburning or something
  14. Thanks I've never seen a picture of direct mounted singles... wouldn't it leave a big space from the tab that goes around the pickup? I'm probably leaning more towards the pickup mounting rings. Unless I'm mistaken they function like a partial pickguard so you can raise and lower the pickups easily
  15. I'm using a set of single coil strat pickups in my guitar. It's not going to have a pickguard, I was wondering what I should mount them in. I was thinking maybe sheet steel but wouldn't that interfeer with the pickups. while I'm here, I got the pickups in a White/Black/White pickguard originally from WD music, I'm gonna either sell this or a plain black pickguard off my Kramer Focus strat copy because they are interchangable. Which one would go for more.
  16. I've never done it but check this out Jon tirone's site It was a link from the main site IF you cut wood the right size with a tablesaw it'd probably bend, you could help it along by steaming it
  17. Thanks... (great to know that guitarbuilding isn't going to take more money from me just yet.) That sounds like a good technique with the sandpaper and the laminate. Myka- why would you need to do both the method you described and therussian558's way, it seems that they do about the same thing? BTW. there are some cool guitars on your site! My take on steel wool is that I can get a really nice shine with #0000 steel wool on frets (i've done it on a mandolin and those frets almost glowed.) #0 and #00 are pretty coarse so it seems it would wear your frets away pretty quickly and leave even bigger scratches then the finer wool.
  18. I was wondering if I could get by without the 30 some dollar file from Stew-mac. I have a nice trianglar file, would that work? also it seems like I could grind a concave slot in a little Arkansas stone I have. In the "Whats new this Month" Section of the main site, it has a link to a new tool tutorial called "how to make a fret bevel tool" but the link is broken and it wasn't in the tutorial section, I was wondering if thats a teaser for something in the works or if it just needs to have the link fixed. Is that the tool I need?
  19. FretFind Thats the best fretfinder I can find... It even converts to fractions But I don't know if Australia usually uses the metric system?
  20. Its where the body is contoured on the top to fit your arm.
  21. They say don't judge a book by its cover and I think that goes for cover size too. That book is great
  22. How much epoxy would I need for an ash body? Sounds like a good way to make the grain stand out like in the making of a strat pictorial. What could I tint epoxy with?
  23. do I do any coats of clear between the sanding sealer and the dye? And how would I make ash's grain stand out.
  24. It says to recoat in 2 hours and its dry to the touch in 30 min but how long should I let it cure for before buffing My dyes just came, I put them over a few clear coats right? And it says that it doesn't need grainfiller, is that right?
