  1. Sheffield, England... brit-rock, rock on!
  2. Man I totally agree with the insanely priced tickets... festivals get stupidly expensive, but at least you get to see quite a few bands... you go and see a normal concert and generally the support acts really suck cus they're RARELY anywhere in the same genre as the actual band playing... I just payed £70.95 for two tickets to go and see Deep Purple in november... thats what approx $129.51... thats like $64.75 per person, including all the booking fees and stuff the slap on top... kinda crazy really... It's the same problem as CD's, they wonder why people buy copies and download MP3's when a new release album is £15? and any band thats mega famous has their albums constantly at £15?! Personally I just wait till sales are on... grab Metallica and Maiden albums for like £7
  3. Hmm... just a little clarification here: for example: Ibanez RG7(HSH) 79.23% 86.15% 92.31% 79.23%... so if its a 648mm scale that would be 513.41mm from the nut correct? Now because its a humbucker what part of the humbucker would I be lining up with this position? the middle of the two coils? so its perfectly either side of this position? Or put one pole, say north, on this line?... and thanks for that link, its now bookmarked
  4. wow, nice explanation frank I just was wanting to see whether there was any specifically really good spots that everyone wants to get... obviously theres no real good and bad spots... hmm, well I'm going for two buckers on this guitar, bridge and neck... going for a really nice metal tone for bridge, and if I can get it a nice bluesy tone for the neck area, for those Metallica intro's or bit of pink floyd or zepplin... think I'm off to test different pick-ups sometime next week, as I have no clue where to start, lol, I've never tried with changing pick-ups or anything, but I hear a lot about Diazzario and Seymour Duncans for metal... not sure whats good for blue's tones...
  5. hmm... I like it... its like an Iceman design just streached out... pretty funky... really like it... here's my Iceman-ish design that I'm working on Just an Iceman with an extra horn
  6. Oak's a damned heavy wood, not sure how it sounds to be honest, but I know its freaking heavy as hell... try shifting a solid Oak bench and you'll see my point
  7. I'd go if I could afford to travel a few thousand miles as well as the ticket saw them last year... unfortunatly I was quite far away, was at Leeds festival in England and I was at the front for System of a Down with my girlfriend... we got crushed against the railings when they started collapsing with that many people pushing... got dragged out... had to go really far back to see the rest of System and then Metallica afterwards but they seriously kicked ass! hehe... hopefully will get to see them again sometime... although personally I think Maiden are better live than Metallica... but each to their own I guess
  8. hehe, its SO true... generally I go in the day time, but the place I go to isnt really near any schools, nor is it in the city center... so its rarely packed with kids... I have this really bad problem where my fingers turn to jelly when I'm put infront of a massive ass amp to test out a guitar, my playing goes to pot, I cant even play "Iron Man" properly... lol... and when you hit some bad notes you feel so UTTERLY bad cus the guys in the shop and any other customers can hear everything... totally bad... testing out equipment is my pet hate! lol
  9. I'm not retarded, I do know how to use a search function but you'll find there isn't much in any of those links thats any use... apart from the 24th fret placement, which I cant do... and the 3rd fret harmonic distance for the bridge... all the rest is basically, put it where you like it changes the tone differently...
  10. OK, I've read a book, I've searched online, I've searched the forums... and I cant find much at all on this topic so... Where are those lovely sweet spots to put pick-ups? I know there a good one where 24th fret should be... according to Melvyn Hiscock's book... but I'm having a 24 fret neck so that's out of the question... How do I calculate the nice places for pickups? and with humbuckers do you put one coil on that spot? or put them perfectly either side of that spot? thanks you guys rock for help
  11. Well it should be fun trying to tape that design off... lol... hmm, definitly going to be a task and a half... but alas, this is what I want and I shall work my butt off to try and get it as close to that as I can! Hmm, I better wait till I get this neck then before I order my bridge then, I'll have to check out the height of the frets and see whether having a low profile floyd would be a bad idea... dont wanna build my guitar and find it fret buzzes all over the place! lol But I like low action so I really would like the low profile one if I can get away with it... hmm... *think think think* man planning guitars is hard work... Well at least I'm doing planning, since I decided to make my own guitar my buddy from University has decided to as well... and well erm, he hit it VERY lucky in the fact his dad had some mahogany in the garage... but this is what his guitar looks like at the moment: He didn't have enough wood, so he got some random wood to add to the sides... lol... he hasn't planned a single thing so far, hasn't read any book or stuff online... He isn't listening to me at all... oh well, if he thinks he can just make a guitar randomly I think he's gonna be in for a shock... but oh well... hehe
  12. If the 606 is anything like my 505, which I believe it is, just with the in-built expression pedal (which you can build for the 505 with a cheap volume pedal and a few leads ) then the options available for the step/auto-wah are VERY limited... probably better off with a seperate pedal if your planning on using it a lot... I dont think it really gives you the options of how often it repeats, at what octive etc... its a low-end multi-fx pedal, not some $600 BOSS but hey, might as well annoy some guitar shop owners trying it out hehe
  13. Update on my progress: Well I've just got hold of a nice 2nd hand neck: 24 fret Johnson Neck from ebay Also I've decided on my design, got some plywood today, roughly drawn out my design on it, but due to really bad weather aint had chance to whip out the leccy jigsaw and cut it out I've done an artist impression of what I hope it will turn out like, please note I DO know I've done a crap job of the inlays... but I just couldn't get them right at such smale scale! The only problem I can see with it is how I'm going to get the paintwork effect... but I'll look into it as I go along and most likely end up asking on here for any suggestions... I think I'd have to do the crimson red first, then the black on top of that after the red has dried... but not 100% sure... Also a quick question... Whats the difference between a low profile Floyd rose and a normal one, the only thing I can see different is the fine tuners are slightly different underneath and that they're angled away a bit more... is that all the difference or am I missing something? thanks guys will keep updated as this project goes along!
  14. if your gonna go for a Zoom then make it the 707 mk 2... you'll regret getting the lower models, I have... the 707 mk 2 allows you to store a lot more patches as well as storing recordings onto smart media cards, has a fairly decent drum effects for backing... overall it kicks ass over the lower models... If I didnt need a new amp so bad I'd buy a 707... or a BOSS GT6... lol... but alas I wanna build a guitar, and I need a bigger better amp... so no new effects for me for a while
  15. Nope, Aston... between Whiston and Beighton in Sheffield/Rotherham border
  16. I always remembered it by "Silly Old Hitler Couldn't Advance His Troops Over Aston" I lived near a place called Aston, so I guess some teacher made that up a while back... lol... Trig is easy... especially the stuff you do in secondary school... it get's more complex when you get sin curves and having to find intersects and all sorts of weird stuff like that in college... man college maths really bites! lol... So glad I'm at Uni now and the maths we have to do is a lot easier... well... apart from the binary and hexadecimal sum's... bah!
  17. Well seen as a topics already started about bridges... I'm thinking of getting this for the guitar I'm going to make: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...me=STRK:MEWA:IT Cant seem to figure whats the difference between a low profile and normal one? any info? also just cus it's licensed by floyd rose doesnt mean its gonna be good quality right? should I consider it at all... or look around more UK sites trying to find decent but well priced parts? Also got my eyes on a really nice 24 fret neck on ebay, hope I get it, will go really nicely with my first make if I can get it for a good price
  18. Big enough to hold the tuners I would guess... but from reading the book I've got (reading plenty before I jump into building anything)... the head is part of what balances your guitar, if its too big and heavy then the neck will pull down... if its not heavy enough compared with the body then the body end will pull down... just go for a size similar to other head's course you can change it a bit, just dont make it huge or tiny!
  19. are you sure your voltage is 230? cus I know in the UK the voltage is 230 - 240... you dont actually get perfectly even current through the mains, it varies... as I said here its between 230 and 240... the same in Aussie I think... and probably the same where you live Personally I think it should be fine... but if I was you I'd try some cheap piece of electronics out first to see if it blows... if it dont, work your way up to your most expensive tools... heh
  20. OK I've found it... setting E4 on Zoom 505 is similar, not perfect... would need some tweaking, but you could get it... its called "Step Jet" ... the main component in the sound is a mixture of a step effect and chorus... step effect is defined as "This effect introduces a filter which changes randomly, resulting in an auto-arpeggio sound" enjoy trying to get the sound you need can probably re-produce it on most multi effects pedals, from Zooms to BOSS's etc..
  21. sounds like some sort of weird combo of doubling and weird metallic (as in tinny, metal sound) distortion... I could probably get a similar sound on my Zoom 505... theres a metallic type sound on it by default that I could try with a delay or doubling to maybe replicate something similar?
  22. strats are 25 1/2 inch... les pauls and such are 24 3/4 inch would you not be better not cheaping out on just any old wood you could get cheap and buying some decent hardwood to build a neck? or are you just planning on this being a practise piece? personally I'm not planning on making a neck for my first guitar, I think I'm going to just buy one as I dont want to make a real balls up of it... lol
  23. I never noticed that guy was in their catalogue, wow, thats pretty cool... anyways, the number I've got for him is a mobile number... so I'm guessing its his personal number... maybe this guy can give me some pointers, or even might be able to teach me some stuff, even though it'll cost me it might be worth it for building my first guitar... till I get the hang of the tools and skills needed... nice to see theres a fair few brits on here
  24. Got my book today, and also found somewhere/someone to contact in the UK about custom made necks... Went into my local guitar shop, Academy of Sound and asked one of the blokes I know in there if he knew anyone who made or sold necks... gave me the name of a guy in Sheffield town centre that makes guitars and necks himself... a bloke named John Shuker, his shop is called Guitar Factory... I'm gonna check him out on Monday, see what his prices are like, and the quality of his guitars... the guy I spoke to said this guy makes some absolutly AMAZING guitars... so it's sounding good to me, just probably expensive... lol and after reading a few chapters of that guitar making book I've decided to perhaps go with a more simple design to start off with, the Ibanez Iceman is a little complicated and I should really leave it as a 2nd project... I think I'm going to go for a fixed bridge and either a 25 1/2 or 24 3/4 scale... havn't fully decided on the scale yet... both my current guitars are 25 1/2 and I've never tried a 24 3/4... so maybe I should try one out, see how it feels and then maybe decide to have one for this project... thanks for all the help so far guys, I'm getting more excited about making this guitar everyday... can't wait till I've finished all my planning and can start buying and making it... just out of curiosity would you reccomend buying everything at once? or most of the things? or just start with the base, buy the neck and hardware when its done? thanks... back to reading more of the book.. hehe
  25. Wow I'm really impressed with the amount of friendlyness and help on this site, its really great... OK, I've got some plans for the guitar I'm going to build... so I'm going to try and get access to an A1 plotter at University if I can, get it drawn out full size then make a plywood template... mainly to get me back into the feel of working with wood, it's been so long.. hehe... or maybe even make a mock body out of a cheap piece of softwood first, hmm... thats an idea... Right... necks... where the hell can I buy necks from? The only place that seems to sell necks that aren't Tele/Strat or LP replacements is warmoth.com ... is there any place else? I'm wanting a 24 fret neck if I can get one, and preferbly a nice thin one like Ibanez's wizards... I guess if I can't buy one made I'll have to buy a 2nd hand Ibanez neck or something from ebay... Hopefully my book should be here tomorrow, so I won't bother asking any technical related questions till I've got my book and read it through... hopefully I should be able to find answers to stuff like bridge placement and stuff either in the book or online from the links and searching
