  1. hyunsu, those guitars are awesome... For the moderators... is there anyway to split this thread into a second thread? If I get on here with a dial up link the pic take for ever to load. Thanks
  2. Hi there, The pre-amp that you are looking at provides very little gain... 3db in the specs. So you're not going to see a great deal of gain from that circuit. As far as the sim software and the results you are seeing from it. Sim software is not perfect so you may be seeing a limitation of the software... I doubt it, but it may be. I would look at componant values that you have inputted into the simulator and connections. Look back at the FET device that you are simulating (is it the correct device?) and power supply voltages. Lastly, go ahead and breadboard the circuit and try it... it's simple enough and listen to it... that's the ultimate test... :-) Hope that helps. Rubin
  3. I have tried a variety of methods. The one that has worked best for me is a die grinding bit to rough carve the shape I want. This tool has a lot of flutes that spiral around the bit and has a bullet shape. I then go back with a dremil and sanding drum to smooth some and I finish with a sanding block made with a Magic Rub pencil eraser. With the rough and dremil work I worked in stages so that I don't remove too much wood. My method is not without mistakes as I have had to rebind the body when I cut into it when I got too close. This also resulted in having to carve deeper which led me to the sandthru that I referd to above. Mine is by no means the only way, but it has worked for me... :-) Rubin
  4. Hey Jon, The LP style that I am working on right now has a maple cap that is just shy of 1/2". I have decided to go with a fairly deeply carved top ala PRS. The 1/2" of wood has been fine. I did sand thru at one point where I came off the binding because I dip downward pretty deep but that was a miscalculation on my part. In short 1/2" should be fine. Carving a top can be almost as gratifying as carving a neck. Have fun! Rubin
  5. Hi Drak, I know you've already started but if you're like I was it will take a few sessions to get the final look you want. I found that if I penciled in where I wanted to carve and carved a little then checked the results I freaked a lot less. I carved the same amount of wood I just did it in small steps. I didn't seem as bad or as scary :-) Hope it goes well... Rubin
  6. Not being able to see how you have wired things I can't tell you exactly what is wrong with you're pick-ups but from what you have described you need to look at the shield or ground side of your wiring starting at the "ring" side of the output jack and work back into the electronics. It sounds as though the pickup ground is not connected to the output jack ground. Hence the noise when you touch the strings. Look for a solder joint that isn't good (a cold solder joint)... Hope this give you a starting point. As far as a capacitor, you should have a .02uf cap in the tone control circuit but nowhere else. Rubin
  7. oops... link didn't get in there. Try this: http://www.shakerworkshop.co.uk/pirahnapine.htm Rubin
  8. Hi southcaver... check our this site. They've got a little bit of info there. Nothing about being a tone wood though. http://www.shakerworkshop.co.uk/pirahnapine.htm' target='_blank'> Rubin
  9. Do any of you know about Dragon Mountain guitar bodies, necks and parts? They post a lot of parts etc. on E-bay. I guess I'm wanting to know if the stuff is good quatity, etc Thanks, Rubin
  10. A heartfelt tThanks everyone for your response and help... I really appreciate it. Rubin
  11. I am building an LP style guitar using maple capped ash. I would like to carve the top keeping with Gibson styling, but want to go a little deeper kinda like a PRS. Can you give me the steps, hints, tools, cautions etc. that I need to be aware of. All is going well to this point... the wood I am using has sentimenal value so I don't want to have to start the body all over again as I have the neck. Thanks, Rubin
