  1. I used to race slot cars at a track builders name steve ogilvie, and he had some nice polycarb paints for RCs and slot cars. There are tonnes of hobby shops in toronto that i have seen em at. I know of 2 im mississauga. I know one place in town i can check if someone needs me to.
  2. All of my body styles start out as lil guitars n basses in paint. I know it sucks, but i got nothing else. i just make it greyscale, and enlarge it to the right size on 4 pieces of paper n tape em. it works pretty well, plus its quick and easy. peacce
  3. I knew what the gibson join was, mortise and tenon. I was just saying i had seen the dovetail too. But yeah, I like Wes' Idea. Thats what i was curious about most. I just thought that there had to be a catch to it, but i suppose maximizing the gluing area helps. Im just going to make the neck joint by putting the neck on top of the body, and 2 plexi pieces on either side of the neck, clamp em, and use the plexi as my template. now all i gotta do is find some nice plexi i can give a 1 or 2 degree angle
  4. hey all, hope your holidays went/are going well. Mine was too d@mn short. But I was curious as to how people are doing set necks. I know of the gibson method, mortise and tenon, dovetail. But am curious if anyone else is doing somehting different. Do you need a dovetail? or can u just make a neck and glue it in? Share your ideas if u feel like it. Thanks. You guys make this site awesome. Chris
  5. I think it would look cool. depends on the fabric too though. i wonder if you soaked a lace in stain, one with big gaps in it, and let it soak into the wood... but i know what u mean about like painting with the lace on it. think it would be cool.
  6. I am looking at some green freshcut 7/8" lumber. do i just go to a kiln to dry it? or do i air dry it for 6 months? will it shrink/warp? thanks.
  7. The title pretty much says it all. Only when the tone is up, it buzzes.. whats the reason? grounding? thanks,
  8. it doesnt have the tuners i bought just the neck, forgetting that it had ultralites. Can i drill out the holes? will this take away too much wood? as theere isnt much space. the headstock is small. they say 9/16" on the hipshot page.
  9. I have a used neck off a jackson JJ bass, and it had Hipshot Ultralite tuners on it. What are my options on new ones? I dont want to spend much as this bass may be a gift. (if done on time) can I drill out the holes? Theyre 9/16" now. most are 11/16" right? also will the footprint of the tuner be the same size? like will i have enough room to mount standard sized tuners? thanks
  10. I was thinking of a mighty mite active soapbar, and their bass preamp. Any experience with this? My friend said thats what was on his cort, and he liked it. If i decide to take off the preamp, can the pickup be used with new pots and a battery box? Thanks
  11. Seeing as nothing i have built or thought of building is in any way a duplication or anything... i dont get what the heck ur talking about. Ok if i had a question about attaching the neck. and there are 3 options... one of them would be copying? ... im just curious as to the current methods. , as i am sure there are probably only so many ways to do it. i am curious of peoples methods. i did not say i was going to copy anything. I dunno. maybe it was just how it was typed, but It seemed like you were accusing me of trying to copy something. I am simply curious about things like how thick they have to be, does the plastic have to be removed? things like that. so i dont know where u got the idea i was copying anything. Im not trying to be jerk, just want to let u know where im coming from. why i wanted to know. what i still dont know but yeah man, im trying to be as original as i can.
  12. Hey there. I was wondering if anyone had information on wood pickup covers? Is it simply a thin box on top of the pickup? Do you have to modify the pickup at all? How is it held in place? Im lost on this... is there a tutorial? i couldnt find any on search. thanks
  13. Corian is very cool. My mom built a house bout 10 years ago with corian counters in the kitchen. Very cool looking. We got a nice big corain cutting board from the scraps, I was a lazy kid and just cut on the counter though. lets just say corians tough... how is it to work with to make inlays? Im thinking oon the right instrument a corian nut will be cool..... has anyone done that?? I think it would be sweet. its gotta be more hard and dese than wood. or am i wrong? im still learning haha. Corian Nut.... think about it.
  14. If you were to use fibers in the neck instead of actual LED's, would you cut and sand the end of the wire to a perfect end, then attach it to the board? or do you have to profile the one side of the fretboard before you add the fiber? I assume a router and such would ruin the fibers... any ideas...
  15. A convert... Use cocobolo and ye shall be saved.. via the use of breathing protection... heard its some bad stuff to inhale. will it be ok if i do it in a shop? you only need to wear protection while ur working right? afterwards theres no risk eh?
  16. Im not too picky about my guitars... I like alot, but i gotta say alembic makes some of the nicest, priciest guitars ive seen. Not to say they are the best, but they definitely get heavy consideration. But im finding alot of thin pieces on the net.... like not thin. but narrow. and theyre nice figure, might do a striped laminate top coco/maple/coco/maple... or something Ps... i might be using watco oils a la carl thompson.... simple n good looking
  17. What kind of finishes look best on Cocobolo tops? I was thinking of using watco oils on my whole bass. but i was curious how the figure would look. I know alembics use a gloss, and its drop dead sexy, but is there a good way to keep the grain and colour like the alembics, by using an oil? Alembic Heres a sweet pic of a nice coco top. Anyone have any ideas? experiences? they wanna share? thanks.
  18. Well I dunno if its legendary, but it gets my respect... Carl Thompson. Guess its not much to many, seeing as theyre not very mainstream. at least i dont think so... But theyre oh so sweet. I just love looking at them. porn isnt even as good anymore. but and as of the 31st, he wont be taking anymore orders for instruments. I just love his work, and hes an inspirational builder to me. And its an opportunity of a lifetime IMO. And when I buy a Dime tribute, you bet it will be the dean. But Im thinking Ill be waiting on the Dean...
  19. So youre telling me I should do it? I only need a deposit.... Should a beginning driver have a ferrari? Guess it makes the learning curve more fun
  20. If you were put in a situation where you had a small window to own a legendary custom instrument, and you had the financial means to do it, would you take advantage of it?
  21. thanks. i was gonna try it myself, but with the fact that there are 18 Laminates making up each half of the top, means i gotta wait a damn long time to get this together, So im gonna go professional. 36 total laminates in the top . I want to use paduk, but am wondering how to go about getting 1/8" thick material, as well as 1/16" ebony. shpuld i buy a one inch piece and cut thin strips off? of should I use thicker pieces, laminate, then thin on a jointer? or would it tear off the thin strip? thanks
  22. Im planning to do walnut/ebony veneer/padauk/hard curly maple/padauk/ebony veneer/walnut. Well you get the idea. But I want the middle to end up being a 2 1/2" wide stip of curly maple, bookmatched. If I find a Resaw Machine, Is it much easier? Where would I find one?
  23. Very cool, what kinda wood is it? and whats that dark wood you use on your other guitars? its nice
  24. I was curious if it was possible to laminate 1" lumber and then bookmatch it to use as a top? How would one approach bookmatching it best? I am assuming every strip, i will have to cut on the table saw, and joint it, then glue it. But will a 1" block of laminates be able to be bookmatched? Thanks
