  1. I've been reading about the Agile guitars but what about the Jay Tursers? Everytime I look up information I never can find out what the bodies are made of, they always state "solid wood body, maple set neck, rosewood fingerboard" - it'd be nice to know what wood they use for the body. Anyone have any experience with jay tursers? Thanks. -Jamie
  2. I am guessing you can do the same with the bridge, seeing as wes said " there is no such thing as too close"...excellent. -Jamie
  3. Sometimes you just get a bad guitar. I live in Toronto and there's a store called Steves Music, and they sell the most guitars here mainly squires, fenders, ibanez, gibsons, bc riches, jacksons, and yamahas (no epis. for some reason). I went to try an amp out and I had to use about 5 different guitars because of minor problems I found with them. Sometimes you just get a really poor made piece of garbage. If it was so poor why didn't you just return it and ask for another stateing all the problems? I'm sure they have a return policy. Since we're on the topic of guitar copys and knockoffs, etc. what about Jay Turser guitars? Has anyone had experience with those? -Jamie
  4. Hey all. My friend is thinking of taking his electric guitar and turning it into a fretless. I've read it's best to take a soldering iron, heat the fret, take nippers and start from one end to the other slowly rocking it until it comes out, and continue with all the frets (correct me if i'm wrong on anything please!) How would you go in about filling the holes though to making it a fretless. Thanks! -Jamie
  5. hey there. Is it possible to turn passive pickups into active pickups? Reason why I want to do it is because I've read that actives can boost the output, getting a better sound. Any help is appreciated. -Jamie
  6. I voted Neil Young. Three guys I'd vote for if there would be Danny Cavanagh from Anathema - though not a fast player, he does some amazing dark acoustic works. He could probably make a whole album of acoustic and it would be in the metal section of a music store lol. The other would be either André Olbrich and Marcus Siepen from Blind Guardian. They do some really fast acoustic pieces and with Hansi Kürsch's Lord of the Rings/Mythology lyrics they add a sort of renaissance style guitar work, very nice when the distortion comes in. -Jamie
  7. Thanks. I did find some audio clips on UBL.com just select to search album and type in fretless guitar For the bridge and the tailpiece if I decide to get this has rusting, would steel wool help clear this away? or maybe CLR? -Jamie
  8. So far, the body is 75 bucks, Epi. LP Goth pickups i got for 45, the bridge and tailpeace i can live with, they're just a bit rusted and in a few months i'll probably get a graphtech ghost tune-o-matic bridge but I just checked ebay and for 20-40 dollars you can get a tune-o-matic bridge and tailpiece. Is there a way to deal with the rust anyways like steel wool or maybe a polish? *I AM NOOB * My uncle has tools for sanding, finishing and soldering so no money out of my pocket there except for the finishing. If the scale is fine, I can live with that little hole. It looks a little weird but I don't play that high up anyway! Thanks for the tip on the woodfiller on the neck and then redrilling! I may change the neck I am not sure at all, it depends on the price and I may be happy with the final result anyways. Btw, all the funds I have stated are in Canadian. I'm going back saturday since I have a lesson there and I'll make sure to measure the scale length like you said as well. I will also measure the bridge and tailpiece to figure out which one I will need in case I do buy. For the ebony fretboard, I am emailing a luthier in hamilton (30 mins. from where I live) and ask him how much it would cost to make and put one on. I'm a huge sucker for ebony fretboards probably because I'm so sick of seeing rosewood all the time, but I also like the feel and the tone it gives, especially with the epiphone LP goth pickups! To answer your question, so far it will cost 120 canadian, that's if I don't get a new tail and bridge. and 140-160 canadian if i do get a new tail and bridge. Electronics? I don't know yet because I don't know actually if the electronics are good or not in this guitar except for the pickups (since he painted on them and it could effect the sound *someone correct me on this?*. But if I decided to get four new pots and a selector it would cost between 40-45 canadian. Most I'd pay then would be 200-210 maybe less maybe a bit more *keep in mind I am not including paint costs yet*. Knobs are easiest to find and that won't be a problem. So far I think it's a good deal. If not please inform me so I don't waste my money *off topic* Does anyone know of any soundclips on the internet of a fretless guitar in action? -Jamie
  9. I am an absolute noob but I have been gathering information here and there from this forum. Please put your inputs and if I mention something that I may be doing wrong, PLEASE tell me haha. I found a really good deal on a Vantage LP copy, so I took some pictures of what I'm dealing with here. One of the pictures is blurry, but you get the idea of the finish. The guitar is a vantage LP copy. Mahogony body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard. I believe the top is mahogony, if not, maybe a flamed maple. Hard to tell due to the terrible custom paint job... pic 1 pic 2 As you can see the guy painted on this and didn't do too well of a job. I believe he used acrylic poster paint because it has that drywall feel to it. I am thinking about purchasing this guitar. If I do, it needs quite a bit of work; - new bridge - new tailpiece - new knobs - new switches, pots, etc. - new pickups - new finish - Can anyone recomend any tailpiece and bridge? Can anyone recomend any switches, pots, etc. for Epiphone Goth LP pickups? The neck is a bolt on, and as you can see the guy who previously owned it for some reason yanked it about half an inch forward - why I don't know. A little wood filler in the holes of the neck and re-drill should fix the neck no problem. The guy painted over the pickups and I thought I read around here that painting over the magnets could dim the sound slightly if not all of it. It doesn't matter since I'm putting new epiphone goth pickups in. I am choosing to use 2 pickups instead of 3. Woodfiller again will come in handy filling in that hole. Beside the middle pickup you can see that there's a screw about 1-1.5 inches away, I haven't seen this before so any help would be nice. I don't know what kind of finish I'm planning on doing. I may choose to do just a flat satin black finish (like the goth series) or I may do a material finish. I may end up changing the neck by the way, depending on the measurements because I am a fan of mahogony and ebony and would go nice with the mahogony body and the goth pickups Thanks everyone for your input and help, can't wait to hear from you all. -Jamie
  10. make sure you know the scale of your guitar. you cant just put any neck on any body - oh lord if it were that simple *drools* haha. -Jamie
  11. What is coil tap? Ever since I joined the forum I've been hearing about it and I have no clue what it is. Thanks. -Jamie
  12. If I decide to invest and get the agile and turn it into a voodoo monster, I was thinking of taking the binding off and painting it red or something, but I may take your advice and just paint over it with the ebony. Thanks for the advice and if I decide to go through with this I will keep you updated. -Jamie
  13. How do I fix a ceased volume on a guitar? The only way I can get full volume is through the amp, -Jamie
  14. Thanks, but I'm looking for a cheap LP copy made of swamp ash. If I can't afford to buy the Gibson Voodoo, I can always clone one Do you recommend a place where they may have a cheap LP copy made of swamp ash? -Jamie
  15. The guitar I had my eye on has binding on it. The guy told me that it wasn't holding anything down, so I am assuming that it's just decorative, however the binding is flush with the wood (gah, im lost in the woods on this lol ) The guitar is an Agile AL-2800 If you read it, there's parts that get me soo lost. But the "top" isn't flame canadian maple, it's alder. then it says now they're talking about it being a solid mahogany Why can't they make it like Gibsons or Fenders website - so simple lol. If anyone can help me out with this that would be so sweet lol. -Jamie
  16. That's one sick looking beast man. Keep up the good work! -Jamie
  17. On some guitars I've noticed that the binding is purely decorative and not holding an actual top down. I looked through the tutorials trying to find one on removing binding but I couldn't find one. Any help? -Jamie.
  18. That's fine if it doesn't add to the tone, I just love the look of the voodoo and the sound of the epiphone (hence why i'd keep the goth pickups). Plus I have a yamaha RGX121S in satin black finish so if I could give the Goth the Voodoo look it would be way better than having two black satin finished guitars. Warmoth makes carved tops so maybe I could give them a shout, if it's out of my league I'll just buy a swamp ash flat veneer top. -Jamie
  19. I don't quite understand what you mean. Are you saying a rounded swamp ash veneer cannot be done? The LP Goth btw is flat surfaced. How do they go about rounding the top of the solid body LP anyway? -Jamie
  20. Hey there. I had an idea for a guitar. Since I don't have about 1200 bucks to spend on a Gibson Voodoo LP (or SG dont know which one I want yet!) I was thinking of taking an epiphone goth and changing the look to a gibson voodoo. Before I invest I gotta find out if this is possible lol. I was thinking of taking the gibson goth body, stripping the paint down to wood and then adding the juju finish. You may want to copy the questions, paste it in a reply and add the answers under so it's easy for me and you. What I need to know is: Can you just go to the store and ask for a juju finish lol? What kind of finish is the juju finish (oil, water based?) Can I get parts that look like the gibson voodoo, red/black knobs for example? (note: i am not replacing the pickups, i'll just use http://www.universaljems.com/cart/bobbin.htm) Can I get a swamp ash LP rounded veneer top that I could just glue on? Is that red acrylic poster paint that gibson used on the voodoo? If I decide to paint the skull on how would I go about doing that since the epiphone ebony fretboard probably has a finish on it? If I have anymore questions that come to mind I'll post them. Here's a pic of what I was thinking of. Vugoth
  21. Thanks erikbojerik. I'm thinking of cutting it to a block (just off centre like you said) and taking it to a kiln. If I can't find one in Toronto Canada where I live my uncle can get it done since he goes to Quebec all the time, and they're the biggest lumberjacks in the world haha. I was thinking of using ebony or bloodwood for the fretboard, which of course I'd buy. I really don't feel like waiting a year since the bass body has been sitting in my room in a box since December. Here's a pic of it. lotus body with custom pickguard EDIT: Well I'm a moron. The tree is not walnut (sorry everyone). I'm 17 so I don't exactly know which tree is which around my house and when I asked my mom she misheard what I asked. The tree that fell and almost crushed my neighbours house is an apricot tree. I also have 3 tree limbs of cherry lieing around outside. Can apricot or cherry be used for a guitar neck? Please help and sorry about the error. EDIT2: I went to USAcustomguitars.com and I give them thumbs up for their selection however... NO 32" SCALE - haha oh man, why all the hate? lol -Jamie
  22. Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm gonna be checking out that ESP viper actually. I'm looking for a guitar that has incredilble lows - so far the LP Goth is in the lead but now I have to try the SG Goth. I will also be trying out the LP and SG Voodoo but judgeing from the price of those, one will have to be so amazing that it makes me want to keep it over my girlfriend of 2 years haha. -Jamie
  23. Alright thanks everyone. One more though lol; If I use the walnut tree limb, would I have to shape it from a specific part of the tree limb, such as cut more towards the centre rather than the outside? -Jamie
  24. Everytime I go to warmoth's website they make it sound like they only build necks to fit Fenders only. I probably could find a kiln since I live up here in Canada. My French uncle in law may even have one for all I know haha. Can any kind of wood work with any kind of wood? -Jamie
  25. Alright I got my images up of my teisco. Sorry if they're terrible, but hey i got a cheesy camera for a reason lol. I think the humbucker was added by my uncles friend cause when you look at it, it's on an angle, plus the teiscos I see never have these. This is a Sears guitar actually made by Teisco/Silvertone. No name but inspected by vintage professionals and done with a bit of research as well. You can tell its sears by the hologram. Don't you just love the whammy bar? See you don't need to spend money on a bigsby replacement! Also included is another vintage guitar - Eko violin/beatle bass. This is my dad's. Les Claypool loves these momma jommas. Eko seems to be back in business but they're producing strat and les paul knockoffs. Neck body Eko -Jamie
