  1. Call me slow today but I have no idea how that would work. Unless or course you held the end of the fretboard that's not in the jig against the fence?
  2. I found this, doesn't look like it's that old unless they also did this in the 60's?? http://www.fenderstore.co.uk/acatalog/Show...r-Electric.html
  3. Cool erik, thanks. Those were some of the things I was thinking too. Like if you did it that way, there would be less to plane off of the back (fig 3) . I was thinking of just angling down the front neck pickup area of the body blank on a table saw (Fig 2), thus not needing to plane. I've always been confused by planing down and leveling a neck through done like Fig 1. I get the theory behind it but figure you'd always be left with a carved top style or like a dip where the neck pickup would sit? Unless like you said, put it through a planer, which I don't have access to.
  4. Imagine doing a neckthrough, well semi neckthrough, like this. I just came across this pic and haven't really thought about if it would be easier than gluing wings on or less costly, or? Looks interesting though, thought I'd share. http://users.bigpond.net.au/tfajdiga/works.html#bass
  5. Back to the original topic: (not complaining at all, cool converstions, but I just stumble4d across this, this ummm... 'guitar') http://community.webshots.com/photo/202686...202686369gKrbJb
  6. I was thinking about an airbrush and that way I could get a small compressor (I live in an apartment). So, doing a whole body, do you find that the airbrush is adequate or would you need a spray gun if you're going to use Createx??? Also, have you found the metal flake in Canada????
  7. Hi. where did you find that in Canada? I have a can of KTM-9 clear that I'm waiting to try out, but need some water based paint first. Do these come in rattle cans? Y'all could also try here? http://reranch.august.net/phpBB-2.0.4/phpBB2/index.php
  8. LOL! No, I just wanted to verify if what he's describing in that post is that he cuts out the neck through blank with the neck portion already at an angle, so he doesn't need to angle the wings at all? Sorry man, I've only been speaking english since I was about 1 1/2 or 2 years old and my 'rocker' phase severely clouded my brain, so I still have trouble explaining myself
  9. Hi, in building a neck-through with a TOM, I always thought you'd glue the wings at a slight angle. The way Neal Moser describes it, it seems like he cuts the blank with a neck angle. Am I reading this right? And if so, wouldn't it affect the strength? Or is this way acceptable, you'd just be wasting more wood etc.? CHECK IT OUT HERE Thanks!
  10. Holy fork! That's why i stick to Createx!
  11. Thanks tons Myka, I think I'll stick with the rasp for a while more anyway. Great idea for the copy carver link too! Oh, I didn't mean using the Router base freehand, I meant the board that the neck is clamped onto. Does that board run along a straightedge or something or do you just move the board itself freehand. I can see that you'd have to move it left and right, the length of the neck but does it move against a fence or something? OR does the flush bearing basically make sure you don't stray. Thanks again!
  12. Great question! I was wondering if you move the 'base' freehand? Or if the 'base' runs parralel to the 'base' of the router holder. Man, was that worded right? I wasnt to build one but to use on a router table. Same principle should work, no? MYKA, HELP!
  13. Regarding this: That is a really cool idea (and entire tutorial) and will save me $35 ! Would you happen to have any othe pictures of it? For some reason I can't wrap my brain around how the file stays in at the required angle. Thanks!
  14. Thanks, those are some great ideas/options - as usual from this board!
  15. I was pouring over my Stew Mac catalog and was trying to figure out what tools I could buy from the hardware store instead of the 'specialized only for guitar' tools they have (ya, trying to save some money! ) I realize that you shouldn't scrimp on certain things but surely some could be bought locally for alot less. I'm thinking mainly fretting tools: Fret hammer - ? Straight edge - wouldn't a really good steel ruler do? http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_suppl...aightedges.html Fret cleaning tool - couldn't you just use a thick blade or thin screwdriver? http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_suppl...aning_Tool.html Fret leveling file - gotta be something else? http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_suppl...ling_Files.html Fret cutter - this one you might have to buy unless you have access to a grinder? Fret Crowning files - These don't look too specialized? http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_suppl...ning_Files.html If I had the money, it'd be nice to buy all this. I also realize some things ARE guitar specific.
  16. Looks great! So did you mean you did the neck and pickup pockets without a router? WOW! even if you used a router, it's way better than my first attempt at a neck pocket...
  17. I hear ya Drak, I was a bit wary, it's just a cheapo, I'll invest in a proper smaller one. Sorry 'bout the threadjack
  18. Cud, you are the Jig King! I'm wondering if I can use my router (mounted like your spindle sander) for a spindle sander, or if it would be too fast?? Anyway, I really dig your tutorial, great pics and nice work too! It's so cool how you can get inspired by others here huh?
