  1. Yeah this is what I most likely will end up doing, but i was talking about hand painting a pretty curvey design onto it, and tape just wont get the job done there. But I'm tryin to come up with different straigh/slightly curved designs that i can tape off. Simply due to the point you make, its compatable, and not rocket science lol. For that guitar did you just clear coat with the duplicolor clear or what?
  2. I read through this whole swirling tutorial, and i didnt see anything about laquer. So i did a search in the forums and it said something about mixing it into the actual tub you dip the guitar into? Or can you just spray some kind of laquer over top of the paint after its dry? Also i was wondering where i can buy all the stuff needed to do this. People say they have good results with testor's model paint, but how much of that do you use, it seems like the average size comes in a bottle the size of my thumb. Any posts before this thread gets locked would be greatly appreciated, since im most likely asking questions that im probably over-looking thanks in advanc - Louis OH YEAH - what is an example of a brand name of borax, ive probably seen it before, but where can i buy it. a hardware store somewhere? walmart?
  3. I havent actually bought the laquer yet, its just im tryin to finish this whole guitar using stuff from walmart. I just plain dont like ordering stuff from the internet anymore. Although I do want a good looking finish if you guys think this enamel idea will work. I have shot primer, and red automotive duplicolor paint so far. So if you think the enamel idea is better, recommendations are much appreciated thanks again - Louis
  4. Yeah, i think i was in the process of typing that post when he actually posted.
  5. Yeah, thats the thing about this clear coat. I sprayed it on another guitar of mine, and it didnt quite feel like laquer you know? I mean... its clear, dries pretty hard i suppose... but something was different. AND... it doesnt need buffing IMO. the finish I got from it was smooth and non-orange peely enough, and i dont have any compounds right now. I just need to know what kind of black paint to use, spray paint will dry fast, but would it be better to use that than model paint, just so I can stick with the same brand of paint?
  6. yeah, spraying some clear on before i paint sounds like a good idea. So heres the process, 1) paint guitar red (already done) 2) spray about 2 thin coats of duplicolor clear 3) paint with black model paint (whatever you guys think would work best) 4) more clear coat Oh yeah, garehanman, im using the spray can variety from walmart, the whole thing im going for is the cheapest finish possible that still looks good and wont fall apart
  7. So ok, can I not spray laquer over the red paint thats on there now (duplicolor clear coat)? Assuming that i can at least spray the clear coat over the red paint (since im pretty sure that the clear is designed to be sprayed over the paint), whats to stop me from buying duplicolor black spray paint (walmart is where im buying all this cheap-o stuff), and spraying that into a cup? and those brands of model paints your talking about, will they do ok with the clear coat?
  8. Would tester's model paint work for Painting a design with a brush? I also plan on laquering with dupli-color's auto body clear coat. heres a pic of the guitar so far. This is one can of primer, and a streched out can of red import car paint by duplicolor. http://www.geocities.com/ledzendrix1128/redlpj.JPG Thanks, - louis Crap, someone tell me if this is too big... im not sure its borderlined... i link it if need be. EDIT - ok linked
  9. haha, nvm, i decided not to do it... but how is it a different neck joint? I mean.. .its still 4 bolts no matter what you do. maybe explain this a little more?
  10. Yeah i tried that on a scrap piece of pine luckily before i did it on a guitar. I burned the pine trying to heat the wood up and drip in solder before it cooled too much, it seems like i tried everything to get that solder to mold, but it just wouldnt work...maybe we're all just missing a curcial step?
  11. I got this guitar from a friend for free, wants me to fix it up and give it back to him i guess (is what i find out later). But i was thinking about turning it into a double cut. It doesnt seem like its that hard to do, but the only thing im worried about is the fact that its made out of ply wood (epiphones = crap). If i put grainfiller over this on the edges will the layers of laminate still show through the finish? cuz the layer definately show with the finish over it in the pickup cavities. So basically im asking for things to look out for while doing this project, and also if there is a special method used when finishing the edges of plywood...
  12. I like that idea, no joke i might actually use that. I know this girl at school whose into art, i suggested a red body bursted to black around the edge. Maybe on the back i can do the black widow hour glass to keep things interesting. EDIT: or possibly a black widow hour glass burst? on the back?
  13. I would do somethin crazy like that, but sorry, i dont have an airbrush. I was thinkin of an EVH type thing, but they're kind of boring in my opinion. I wanna do somethin with an actual design. If I were to hand paint the guitar, what would be the best thing to use keeping in mind I intend on laquering over it. Is testors model paint the best way to go you think? -Louis EDIT - by actual design, i mean like a picture of somethin, sunrise, moons, whatever... didnt mean to offend anyone saying the EVH guitars arent designs, cuz they are, and thats what I will end up doing most likely if i cant think of anything
  14. My friend recently came to me and gave me a guitar that had been stripped of some of the parts (bridge, saddles, tuners, ect.), and told me I could have it. I told him I need as much practice finishing as I can, so I would strip the rest of the hardware, sand it down, and give it back to him with a new finish. Im tryin to think of some inspiration for a neat design using duplicolor rattle cans (cheaper is better). So if anyone has some pictures of killer opaque paint finishes (no translucent dyes due to the fact that it it an epiphone les paul junior... and yes... it is actually made out of laminate plywood). Thanks in advance, - Louis
  15. I cant wait to see this thing done. You thought about colors/dyes yet? dont see too many semi-hollow bodies around here.
  16. Yeah, i agree, a router goes without saying, i classify that as more of a power tool. Im talking about large equipment. I dont know how you would build an electric guitar without a router... i have a crappy one, and i def need to invest in a better one.
  17. Im thinking about making an investment in a large machine to help make guitars. Which of these machines do you think is the most valued in a shop.
  18. You can get good results if you put on a lot of coats. Do a search under the tutorial section, someone did a real good tutorial that helped me out a lot. I think it might have been LGM. As far as the respirator... DEFINATELY invest in a good one. I sprayed my first coat of nitrocellulose laquer and it made my throat sore for about 3 days. After that I wore one everytime. I sprayed a thin coat too, due to the fact it was the first coat. The stew-mac laquer is good too, just make sure not to use it when its humid out, i did it on a misty rainy day during a break when it wasnt raining.. and it made my finish bubble up. Which it kind of a pain to fix. Just read the tutorial though, its pretty thorough in how to use rattle cans. EDIT: Heres the link: http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=9800
  19. gosh, you need to have the guitar done by sunday? are you planning on buffing or anything? I was under the impression that nitro took at least a month untill it was really dry and cured, mines still drying and i shot mine about a month ago
  20. its dried 2 days now and it still looks bad... but i think the stuff at stew mac is discontinued **EDIT** - nope sorry, the blush eraser is in stock, I was looking at the "Laquer Melt." That is discontinued... my mistake
  21. Yeah, I like this guitar as well. Definately post after you get the volume pot drilled. I would also like to see the headstock too. Definately great work though!
  22. I was actually considering doing that, but I just don't want to make the problem worse. I was also wondering where I could buy this laquer solvent. Can I get it at Lowe's or Home Depot? Thanks again. - Louis
  23. So i got 2 small knicks in my finish right before i got ACL surgery. I drop filled the knicks with a Q-tip, and it turned out fine. Today I just started getting up and moving around (its been a week since the surgery), so i decided to finish drop filling so it was level or raised above the plane of the rest of the finish so i could sand it down when it came time to buff it. But as soon as i did this, the nitro i put on started getting cloudy. It looks like the new nitro didnt bond with the original coat of nitro that has been drying for a week+. Is there anything I can do to fix this other than just level sanding and buffing and hoping its not as noticable after this? Thanks - Louis
