  1. You would probably be better off doing repairs locally by word of mouth. Believe me, once people find a competent tech they will tell everyone they know. There's a guy here in town that opened up a shop 3 or 4 years ago and within 6 months he had more business than he could handle. The poor guy's a wreck. Start small and build up. Conventional wisdom is not often wrong.
  2. This aint slummin'. I have a Variax transplant brewing and this site is a good resourse. Well, you're right about that. What I meant was, I don't see you around much anywhere, much less here. So, is that transplant gonna be a bassboat flamey thing?
  3. Hey Stike! What's up? You out slumming?
  4. I've never seen them for sale, but Mick's favorite Girl Brand Guitars uses them. http://www.girlbrand.com/
  5. I got that. It doesn't matter anyway. DD seldom takes advice, even when he asks for it.
  6. Painted on binding will, in my opinion, always look cheap no matter how "good" it is.
  7. Tru-Oil is a great finish, but I don't think it will keep a maple fretboard from eventually becoming worn and dirty. That's Houndog's Strat, ain't it?
  8. More info please. What kind of guitar? Set neck or bolt on? Hardtail, TOM, trem? Did you get it already made or did you put it together?
  9. There are tons of Fender and Fender-style flame necks out there. Here's a Danny Gatton model prototype neck: http://www.larkstreetmusic.com/list/pict/GattonNeck.jpg Warmoth and others offer flame maple as neck wood. I have a Mighty Mite neck that has some nice flame in it. If your wood was properly dried and stable it should be no problem.
  10. Reranch for nitro, hands down. Keep in mind that the owner only does this part time and the online store is not open 24/7, so buy early and stock up.
  11. Guitar Fetish. No used, just new. Decent quality, decent prices.
  12. Just buy some Fender pickups and be done with it. Jeez.
  13. Those Wilkinsons have alnico magnets, and the screws are holding the base plate on.
  14. Those pickups have ceramic magnets with steel poles, typical of lower end guitars. In alnico pickups the pole pieces are individual magnets. Ceramic pups don't have to sound bad, but alnicos are generally higher quality and tend to be smoother and fuller sounding. It all depends on what sound you want and how much you're willing to pay to get it. If you want a decent sound from an affordable pickup, check out Tonerider at www.tonerider.com. Forum member rjhalsey is a US distributor.
  15. Vai still uses it. Anyone else doing it is kinda goofy.
  16. rock n' ro is about the strugge. the strugge to pay an instrament that doubes as a torture device. and woud appear my efg mno key no onger works. __^ I thought you were typing while pinching your tongue.

  18. StewMac gives a string spacing on the Tusq preslotted nut. I use this one all the time.
