  1. Use a band saw to cut out the pattern. I'd suggest 1/4" plexiglass. With plexiglass you can see through it to get the best position on the wood, and if it's going to be a finish that isn't solid you can see the best way the shape looks with the grain/look of the wood. If you're dead set on using MDF, I can't really help you. Did you try a spray adhesive to apply the shape? i think that might help with the paper crinkling instead of using something like white glue.
  2. Too bad about the crack. Definitly looks like a cool oppourtunity to inlay some fine looking wood down the center there.
  3. The body could be routed for a different scale length than the neck. If its a TOM bridge or any non-trem really, you could fill the old holes and set the right scale length with the bridge. I suppose you COULD bolt the neck on a little farther out but that would leave an ugly gap between the neck and the body, and the neck might not be tight in the neck pocket, which you don't want. Maybe post a link to each item and we could tell you more?
  4. Great trick! We used it a lot in the organ shop.
  5. Yeah mask it off good. I'd start with the thinner pinstriping tape around the edge to make sure nothing runs through the tape, then mask over that with blue tape. Would look cool if you put a pinstripe separating the 2 colors, looks like that one has a black one.
  6. Cool to know, I wanted to ask some questions about measurement for 8 strings, but wanted to wait until I started building one. I'll have to remember this thread. Thanks!
  7. I've gotta agree with joining the wood before planing. When I was building organs I would've gotten fired immediatly if I didn't bother running the wood through the jointer. Our process there was joining, planing, drum sanding, palm sanding, final hand sanding. Then between each coat of sanding sealer we'd hand sand again. Did a lot of freaking sanding.
  8. I may be wrong but you can skip step 8. What type of fretboard is it? as long as it's not maple lemon oil works good for fretboards.
  9. It's not. 12" is 12 inches - a distance of about 305mm, and it's the radius of the curve. Yeah so if you drew out a 24 inch diameter circle the radius would be 12 inches. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CIRCLE_1.svg take one section of the outline of the circle and you've got what the fretboard looks like, a curved line. hope that helps explain the radius a little better for you.
  10. Yamaha Pacificas are great. I've got one with EMGs in it, plays good for what it is. My first guitar was a bronze warlock and a crate amp. The warlock isn't that great but the crate is a cool little 15 watt amp.
  11. Bugs, leaves, and dirt are usually the biggest problem with painting outside. Rain could also be a problem. I wanted to paint my truck, so I watched the weather. There was no rain forecast for a couple days, so I thought I'd paint it then let it dry in the garage. I got half the truck sprayed with a first coat, went in to put more paint in the gun, step outside and it starts raining. needless to say I had to sand it down and start again. As for drying, I'd say hang it somewhere with little dust/ movement like stated before. Maybe do more thinner coats to speed up drying time and cut down on the risk of a bug flying into it.

  13. hey man if you want to build it than go for it!! Im not going to be building any of thouse any time soon, I come up with sooooo many random designs that once in a while someones looks like something ive done. I really only have 3 designs that I would not be happy with anyone takeing Thanks man! I'm going to see if I can tweak it a bit more, see what happens.
  14. Cool work. I really like the tele, something about purple and green together is just cool.
  15. Cool! Got any pictures? While I don't like the shape much anymore, I'm still a huge Misfits fan. I had read about the Production guitars from October, pretty cool. Did you do any work on Argyle Goolsby's bass or just one guitar for Doyle?
  16. Damn you Metal Matt!! That's a cool guitar, love the green over the maple. Back to the drawing board again.
  17. hahaha never thought about cramming everything possible in there. Posting about this actually got me kind of excited about getting back to this. I spent the last couple hours messing with what i could do with the shape and came up with this: I like it. I think I'm going to use the warmoth neck I've got. Maybe cut off the wings and add some stringers. Maybe put a figured maple veneer on it. not sure yet, but I've got ideas flowing through my head now.
  18. Well, that's other thing, the shape has gotten less appealing to me over time. I've been trying to design something out of whats already there. I've got the butt end figured out with what i want but I'm still trying to figure out something to do with the horns.
  19. Figured I'd show off the guitar I've been working on for 3 years. Ive had a LOT of roadblocks along the way. This started out as my senior project in high school, and I started work on it in my junior year to get a head start. After I graduated it still wasn't done, I got frustrated with my mistakes and put it aside. Then the medical problems came on so It was really put on the back burner. The plan was to build an anihhilator like Doyle from the misfits. Figured it would be a cool shape to have since you couldn't buy it, and not many people would have one. Maple neck through with mahogany wings, rosewood fingerboard. Floyd Rose trem, Duncan Invader hum, one volume control. I started it and thought I was doing good, but 2 problems I had were no neck angle (I thought I would just recess the Floyd.) And the body was too big. So recently I decided to cut the neck off and make it a bolt on. One of these days I'll get around to having it finished. I wont give up on this guitar. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tri...245/guitar7.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tri...245/guitar6.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tri...245/guitar5.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tri...245/guitar4.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tri...245/guitar3.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tristan245/a11.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tristan245/a6.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tristan245/a5.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tristan245/a1.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s97/tristan245/a4.jpg
  20. My names Tristan. Been lurking around here and figured I would register. I know some of you guys (Zyon's Dream, Metal Matt) from the MCS forum, Im warlock138 over there. I havent built a guitar from scratch yet, but Ive been messing with "projects" and what not for almost 4 years now. Before some medical issues popped up I was working for Odell Organs. The USA's oldest pipe organ company. Pretty cool job and I learned a bunch that can be applied to guitars/woodworking. Once I get back on my feet, you guys should see some builds and finished projects from me. Can't wait.
