  1. Bah, all I have tonight is 10K resistors. Tomorrow I'll get some 1Ms. Thanks for the article, hella useful.
  2. Almost every gig I have to turn my volume higher than practice levels. So he'd probably be getting within that 10 range unless they're miked every single gig.
  3. I tried searching on this but there are only so many queries above 4 characters for this. I just wired up an A/B box and it sounds really good, doesn't add any noise, doesn't color my tone, etc.. However, the one this it's supposed to do, it doesn't do well. When I switch channels, there is a large 'pop.' Is there any easy remedy to this? I'm using a DPDT toggle.
  4. Yes. I understand this. But my question is, at the levels I specified above, is there a large risk of blowing up these speakers as it is a 130 watt head?
  5. Yeah, I know about those wiring schemes but they don't help since I need a 4 ohm load. What I said was a 2x12 cab for 100 watt handling and 4 ohm load.
  6. Thanks for the replies, guys. One more question: I do plan on butchering my cab and only using two in parallel. However, these are 50 watt speakers and the head is 130 watts. I have the master around 8 and the volume around 3-4. Should I be worried about blowing them up or is that basically not even close (they're Celestion Rocket 50s). If it's a possibility that they'll blow, I'll just build another cab and use the 2x12 for a different amp and it will sound neat.
  7. Taking it to a tech can't hurt either way.
  8. So, I've got a Musicman HD130. It has a 4/8 ohm selector and two outputs wired in series. So I could set it up for 8 ohms and run two 4 ohm loads, correct? Well, I'm going to be rewiring a cab of mine to be able to use two. Right now it's wired in parallel/series for an 8 ohm load. All speakers are 8 ohms. According to my calculations, I could wire two speakers in parallel and then put the other two in series for a 3.2 ohm load. Would it be safe to run this in this setup? I love this amp and really don't want to damage it by being ignorant about loads and all that fun stuff so any help would be appreciated. Oh and here's the setup I'm thinking of illustrated. +-----O-----+ | | |-----O-----| | | |---O---O---| | | Apologies if I'm getting all of this totally wrong.

    My Music

I'm not saying it's anything that I'd listen to again, but I have heard much, much, much worse. Keep at it, and keep an open mind to other genres. Sounds like you're developing an understanding of scales and structures, something that a lot of big label bands today don't have.
  10. Eh, it looks like with that you have to know EXACTLY what you want. Right now I'm just wanting to experiment with different kinds of pedals, not spend a fortune on one that I don't even know if I'll ever use. Looks like quality stuff though. Oh yeah, if you'd like to hear the stuff we do to get a better feel for the style of pedals I might be able to use, we're at Myspace. </shamelessplug> Note: neither of those songs were recorded with my current setup. The new one sounds muchhhhh better.
  11. Okay, I have a weird question. I've been doing a lot of research on embedded OSes (mostly for work) and was wondering if anyone has worked with one and how complex it would be to integrate one into an effects pedal. I mean, it seems like the only things necessary would be a custom kernel, the correct ALSA drivers, a few plugins, and ways to interface with any I/O devices. I think it'd be great to have a starting point with tons of effects on it that you could copy for individual stompboxes. Not really a multi-effects pedal, but a stompbox where you could switch it to delay if you didn't need distortion anymore. Meh, I guess that's the same purpose as a multi-effects pedal but the thought just interests me.
  12. So, having sunk about $1400 into my new rig so far, I'd like to add a few more pedals to the lineup. I'm playing in a band that does post-rock/doom/sludge type stuff (similar to Pelican, but with a faster and more technical feel). I'm tuned to standard B. Currently my setup is as follows: Gibson SG -> TU-2 Tuner -> MT-2 Distortion -> BD-2 Overdrive -> DD-6 -> Echo Park (getting rid of this next practice) -> Music Man HD130 -> Marshall 1960A cab. Not really sure what I'm looking for (except a GE-7 which I will be picking up soon). Just anything I could use to get spacey sounds that will be either true bypass or very low noise/tone sucking. Also, recommend an A/B/Y box? Thanks!
  13. Thanks, I'm going to pick up a breadboard and some parts tonight. What should I do about a power supply? Would a standard 9-volt battery work for now or is there something special to use with a breadboard (or will I find out at Radioshack like I probably should)?
  14. I've been doing a lot of research on electronics in general and got a book on tube amp maintenance and construction, and I'd like to build a stompbox. The only thing is, my only exposure to electronics is really guitar wiring and a few computer things (replacing components on a mobo, rewiring pinouts, etc.). So my question is: in order to avoid wasting parts, would it be in my best interest to invest in a decent breadboard instead of buying PCBs, just to test out these projects, and then when I'm ready go all out with PCB and chassis, or should I just get what I need when I need it and hope for the best? Do I even have the concept of what a breadboard is for right? Help!
  15. I caved in, actually thought about my money situation and experience, and have decided that guitar making isn't for me. I'm going to get about a year's experience before attempting another guitar build. But will get a jointer within the next few months. Oh yeah, and I ended up picking up an amazing playing Epiphone, a Duncan 59, and a Dimarzio PAF pro. It sounds great and cost about a quarter of what it would have to build it myself at this point. Thanks for all the suggestions.
  16. I'm having a bad day and want to spend some money. I need a planer and a jointer but only have enough for one right now. So, should I get a 6 1/8" jointer or a 12 1/2" planer (I don't really care about doing one piece body blanks right now)? Hurry, because I'm going to go to the store in the next few minutes!
  17. Good idea. This is what I'm going to do. Thanks for the input, guys. I'm going to start looking for a bass rig that can handle this now (probably will go with a Sunn head and a couple of awesome cabs). Sweeeeeeet.
  18. I refuse to! But you do have a point and I should probably take it into consideration.
  19. Ouch. That's a bit pricey. I might just try to find the cable used to support telephone poles. Thanks for the link.
  20. I'm going to be building a 3 string long scale bass pretty soon for a really really really really really really really really really really really really really really heavy and low tuned doom band. What is the largest gauge possible and where can I find it?! Thanks!
  21. Google certainly can.
  22. Hey, I've got a question. I've got a Music Man HD130 head going into a Marshall 1960A on the 4 ohm setting. The head has options for 4/8 ohms + two speaker outputs, and the Marshall for 4/16 ohms mono (no daisy chain option). I also have a cab full of Rocket 50s that I'd like to use in addition to the Marshall. It's running at 8 ohms. I don't know for sure, but I'm fairly confident that the two speaker outputs on the head are wired in series. Would it be alright to hook both cabs up and switch the ohm setting to 8 on the head while leaving it at 4 on the Marshall cab? Or am I SOL and have to make a 2x12 for a 4 ohm load on the Rocket 50 cab?
  23. Simply beautiful. This has inspired me to give guitar building another try. Thank you.
