  1. wOH! You started your project without have your supplies? So you're missing some hardware, electronics.. finishing supplies... Very.. risky.. And good luck for the interview. $30. Yumm. -IR Well, since I'm for the most part working off of specs that I already have, I'm not too worried. I should be getting my cap, fingerboard, fretting supplies, and truss rod in the next few days, so if that stuff isn't going to work I'll just get another body blank, start from scratch, and consider it a lesson learned. The blanks' combined price is really less than $80, so I'm not too worried about screwing something up. This is more to test the water and see if I'm ready to do this kind of project yet. And thank you. I'm going to need all the luck possible. Edit: Uh, well Stew-Mac said shipping would be 3-6 days but it turned out to be... one? Are they usually this quick? The only other experience I've had with unexpectedly quick shipping was with NewEgg when it was a day early. But this was basically overnight. Did I get a fluke or are these guys just great?
  2. This project is on the backburner for a week or two more. I'm a little short on money to get the rest of the supplies but am interviewing tomorrow for a job that pays $30/hr., so hopefully that won't stay the case for very long.
  3. Arg, I have a lot of reading up to do on this. I know for sure that I can do a 2x12 cab at 8 ohms, so I'm just going to do two of those and me and my other guitarist will at least have a bit of gain in volume. Thanks for the eye opener, could have screwed up some speakers pretty easily.
  4. Just found this. Does that look like it'd work?
  5. Hm, that's a pretty interesting read. Speakers have always confused but that seems to have cleared some stuff up. However, I have a question for you. Since I have those Sheffields sitting around, I was going to build another cab today. My question is, how would I get that cab to run at 8 ohms? The four Sheffields are all 16 ohms. From what I understand about speaker wiring, the setup would be like this. +_______+16_______+16 | | -_________|_________| +_______+16_______+16 | | -_________|_________| Except mono. Which brings me to another question. If that setup is correct for what I'm trying to do, how would I make it mono? Would it just be linking all four up like so: +_______+16_______+16_______+16_______+16 | | | | -_________|_________|_________|_________| ? Then again I still have a lot to learn about impedances and parallel/series wiring, so this setup is probably wrong.
  6. This guy's stuff is quality. Buy buy buy!
  7. Anyone had any experience with these speakers? I just picked up 4 at Guitar Center for $120 even. So far, they sound great. They feel about twice as loud as the Sheffields I had in there (probably because they are almost twice as powerful. Sheffields were 30 watts, these are 50). Usually my master volume is up at around halfway. I tested the cab out tonight with my levels there and got a huge surprise when it nearly blew my house down. Seriously, these things are killer. And for $30 each, you can't go wrong. I'm going to make another cab from my Sheffields and have a full stack. It'll be the loudest thing I've ever owned. If you're looking for some inexpensive speakers with great tone, go pick a set up right now!!! The guy at GC said that they are selling like crazy and that they're going to be gone pretty soon, so hurryyyyyyyyy!
  8. I plan on doing a bit darker stain on the back, and a burst on the top. It's going to be a very natural feeling finish.
  9. I had an Applause 3 years ago. It was great. The headstock got sat on and snapped. I cried. Every Applause that I have played has felt really nice and sounded wonderful.
  10. I like the plain crescent f-holes a lot more too. Since this design is more of a modern classic, I don't think that classic styled f-holes would fit well with it. But the crescents just make it flow better and appear much more pleasing to the eye in my opinion. I'm excited to see this take shape.
  11. Update! Today, got the mortice done. Routed to 3/4" and am going to put on a 1/4" top. Rough-routed the neck pickup cavity. Tomorrow I'm going to be starting on the neck. Finally, it's beginning to take shape! Left side looks like an error, but it's the angle it was taken at
  12. Blah blah blah, say what you want, but I think it's pretty moronic that Americans as a whole have generally decided to reward ignorance. We're basically the dumbest and most ignorant nation in the world because people are too lazy to try to change anything, are too fed up with dumb people to care, or are in fact part of the dumb people. Musical genres are a speck of sand in the grand scheme of things, but it's something that I think is worth trying to keep accurate. And if you don't, that's fine. Don't whine about it, just say "okay" and let me make an ass(hole) of myself. Bye.
  13. Quick update: I'm putting on a poplar top. It's affordable, has a nice grain, and will add to the tone. For the body, the laminate is now: Mahogany/Purpleheart/Poplar/Purpleheart/Mahogany. Test clamp: Going to glue it right now. Found a great place to plane (they did it for free) and am also going to do my mortice on their drill press. Awesome. That's it for now.
  14. If you're looking at anything by Line 6, I'd recommend staying away from almost everything except the Flextone II. Their stuff is generally unreliable and does not sound very good.
  15. It's probably going to be a little bit until my next substantial update. I have decided to do two purpleheart laminates on the body, so I'm looking for a joinery firm in Charlotte to help out with planing and joining. Decided on doing a maple top too, so this could take awhile!
  16. Tell that to someone with a JCM800 (non-master volume) + cab and a nice Les Paul getting amazing tone. While the newer Marshalls (and sometimes Gibsons) are definitely lacking in quality, it's hard to argue that 80s Marshall gear wasn't great quality and sounded great.
  17. You've got that a little mixed up. Nothing really killed metal. It has withstood the test of time and will continue to do so. This fake crap is going to die out soon enough. Nothing but trendy crap that the commercial industry wants to profit from for a bit.
  18. Just got finished with an EP. My band's name is Drive by Desire (though that name's tentative). Here's an old unmixed version (plus a scratch guitar track and no vocals!) of one of our newer songs. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=2791
  19. It looks like there isn't a bushing option for my router that's under $30, so I'm going to be doing the neck joint with chisels! I've been practicing for the past hour and it doesn't seem like too hard of a deal (actually it's a lot easier than with power tools so far). I was wondering if there are any tips on working with chisels on this. Time for more chisel action!
  20. Nice design. Quick question, are you related to a Natasha Irizarry?
  21. Yes I should. Screamo is comprised of bands that were inventive. Throwing in bands that jumped on a bandwagon of contrived post-post-hardcore crap is an insult to the genre. Genres are necessary. If you say "oh, I like music with guitars in it" or a band says "our music has some drums, bass, guitars, oh and vocals too," then it could be one of many styles. Classification is necessary whether you like it or not, and it's better to get the classifications accurate rather than cramming a bunch of genres into one category, because usually there's tons more talent in one as opposed to the other. Granted, I'm not a fan of many screamo bands (maybe 3 at the most), but I'd rather listen to the worst true-to-the-genre screamo band than any of this Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, and whatever else tripe.
  22. Alright, I cut out the body today. I've got a question that I feel dumb for not asking about earlier. Since this guitar is not going to have a top, how am I going to drill wiring holes for the 3-way switch? Would it be to the neck pickup and then down with that wiring? Tomorrow I do some practice mortice/tenon joints!
  23. You just changed my whole perspective on a lot of things. Thanks.
  24. If it starts out as emo and they scream a lot, then it's emocore. If it's emo with tons of punk influence and really spazzy, frenetic music (and they scream or sing really high pitched, or sometimes just normal but keeping along the guideline of spazzy emotional music), then it's screamo. There's just a huge difference. Just like if you call a band like It Dies Today metal, many people will yell at you (me being one of them). It just really disgraces genres' names when you confuse them with crappy bands.
