  1. Sweet! I'll be picking this up asap! Thanks man
  2. So I want to buy a fret press STEWMAC.COM : Fret Arbor Press System But I'm not going to pay stewmac prices plus shipping plus boarder fees for it; I will be buying their fret press inserts though. I don't know where to buy an arbor press, so I was hoping that someone knows where to get one. I live in London Ontario if that helps. Oh ya, and how much pressure should I be looking for? Thanks
  3. Thank you for the tips guys. I'll try learning the enter sandman solo. I've used backing tracks before they do help!
  4. That has to be the coolest wood I have ever heard of that someone is building a guitar out of! Really cool man.
  5. So I'm making the transition from blues and psychedelic to metal. I've been learning sweep picking, the modes, harmonic minor, and alternate picking. I can sweep comfortably t 130bpm w/triplets and my alternate picking feels like instinct now. Can anyone give me some tips on how to use them effectively....I want to be able to make seamless transitions that don't sound like I'm exercising. Something that would help would be practise solos....what are some beginner metal solos that i could practice? Some intermediate?
  6. Ya...So it's just for style....k, I just wanted to make sure.
  7. I was just watching the Steve Vai video where he is playing with the orchestra (a must see), and I finally noticed how his floyd rose was routed...I overlooked this before. Other fr guitars just have a box pattern routed.... Is it necessary to route that way? What is beneficial of that routing pattern? Any negatives that you can think of?
  8. I found the piece on Ebay, and it's $30 plus shipping and handling 23 x 6-1/8 x 1-3/16 It is a board, and the offer free re-saw for bookmatching the saw takes of 1/8. Here's a pic of what I think it will look like bookmatched: http://i745.photobucket.com/albums/xx96/Un...roject/wood.jpg And I found this guy too: http://shop.ebay.com/flamingfiguredmaple10...from=&_ipg= Really nice quilted maple, and a "too low to believe" price
  9. I found a piece of quilted maple thats on ebay, and it's ending in 2.5 hours. It is 9/16 thick The question is; Can I get a nice carved top out of this if I use it for my cap? I want to do a slight carve like the new music man petrucci model....
  10. I'm not getting mad at all I understand why there is a lack of response. If it was the other way around, I wouldn't post anything either....just because of lack of progress. So far my only progress is on a piece of paper (the wood hasn't even arrived yet, but I am about to start building templates ) There's some people that post design pics over and over, and it never becomes anything; people spend their own personal time replying and giving some info that they had to find out the hard way...... So when there is a lack of progress I understand the silence. No worries!
  11. Looks like nobody wants to keep helping me through this.... You guys probably just don't want to waste time on a thread that looks like it's going nowhere. I understand. Well I did some research and it looks like I'm going with the urethane. And I've scrapped the white idea, I'm just going to go for a stain with a black burst. I'm going to try and post a rough drawing of the design tomorrow. I still have a bunch of questions that need some answers. If someone out there would like to give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be 100% sure that all is going to go smoothly.
  12. I have a friend with a spray booth and he is more than willing to paint the finished product. He has lots of urethane. I told him that I was going to get laquer, but he is insisting on urethane. Can somebody please lend some advice on which I should go for?
  13. Sorcery! He's a witch! Burn him! But seriously that demonstration was pretty cool! Thanks for the link. and +1 on using it on a custom build.
  14. The guitar reminds me of the 80's christian metal band stripper!
  15. I will be tinting the wood, it's just I want to stay away from it being to "lifted", I want the grain to be subtle, but maybe not as subtle as that guitar. It will come down to doing tests with scrap quilted maple. Any suggestions on what dyes may be the best to use to lift the grain? My scraps will be very little so I will probably only be able to test a few.
  16. Looks like a really cool design man, I love reading these threads! You guys are very inspirational! I'll be starting mine very soon...
  17. Thanks muffin! This helps me a lot! Do you think gold hardware would be too much? Doesn't look like anything was done to lift the figure....or am I wrong and grey was used to lift the grain....
  18. Thank you Stormy! I'm going to search youtube on the differences of the two....I've heard the licensed is aluminum with steel add-on, where the orginal is all steel.....something like that.... Still need some help on this as well: If I find a nice flamed maple cap (one with a very wide figure...nothing that looks very "busy"), then i was thinking of doing the prs type finish....black dye-sand off---apply translucent colour....So then I started thinking it'll look zebraish....so maybe go over with a grey stain then sand it and apply the white....and maybe even have a black fade.... Ordered the wood today!
  19. Hey, I'm no expert or anything, I just like everything about building guitars! I completed on guitar and finished half of another guitar(it got lost in a move though), and I'm starting a new one very soon. The one I lost was mah with a figured maple cap. the cap was about .30 inches thick, which is pretty thin. My plan with it was to use it as a cap and simply bevel the edges slightly then add large contouring bevels in certain areas. doing this would have created a large loss of maple, resulting in showing the mahogany underneath. Some people like this but usually its done to a thicker cap....so I was going to add a solid burst to hide the mahogany. My first guitar has a maple top as well....no figure. I put it on there for the tone. The cap was nothing special so I chose to do a two tone burst. It turned out very nicely. A good place to get some nicely figured maple is this ebay store, although there are probably a lot better places than this! http://shop.ebay.ca/fine_woods/m.html?_nkw...om=&_ipg=25
  20. So I'll build my own winder then..... I'm really having a hard time deciding the finish right now. If I do not decide on getting a cap then I'll be painting it the most purist whit I can find! But....If I find a nice flamed maple cap (one with a very wide figure...nothing that looks very "busy"), then i was thinking of doing the prs type finish....black dye-sand off---apply translucent colour....So then I started thinking it'll look zebraish....so maybe go over with a grey stain then sand it and apply the white....and maybe even have a black fade.... If anybody understand what I just said and have seen something like that please pleeeeeeeeease please post a link..... But if you haven't....what do you think?
  21. So I'm ordering the wood hopefully tomorrow. I will be buying an original floyd rose and have it professionally machine to fit the graph tech pick up. I have a question on Floyd Rose bridges now......What manufacturer, in your opinion, should I go with. I like the schaller that warmoth is selling, but I read in another forum that schaller isn't the best bet.....THAT guy said gotoh is better....or more trustworthy. Here's the link: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/archive/i...p/t-312436.html On a side note about pickup building.... Should I invest in the stewmac pickup winder?
  22. Woah my comment got deleted!? All I did was say that this happened to me too.......I can take a hint though ps my pic was 62X52 and 1.82 kb
