  1. I put metal, because it's the closest thing to Tool I guess. Tool has their own genre. I also like The Mars Volta... now what genre might that be?
  2. I say Mesa, I have a mesa, and I love it... but I would rather have a diezel (along with my Mesa + a Marshall) PS. If you caught on, I'm a Tool fan
  3. sure the REAL ones might be good quality, but they still look horrid.
  4. Hello... I don't know much about paint so I'm throwing out another question. The guitar I'm making is going to have a nice light-amber natural finish on it (dye). But I need to know what to do for a good quality clear coat overtop. My Dad knows someone who works at a shop where they paint cars, and I was thinking of getting a clear coat done there. Now. The paint that they use; would that ruin the wood or anything? All it is, is a clear coat (or a few) so that the guitar has a nice, shiny look to it, with the natural dyed wood underneath it. Is it a good idea? Thanks
  5. How much smaller, like would there be a problem with say putting a mighty mite neck on a standard american strat? would it fit?
  6. Yeah Their stuff seems to be pretty cheap, and by looking at the pictures, you can see that their stuff looks good, but it's a picture.... A rosewood strat neck on ebay is $89.99 brand new.
  7. I've ordered all the parts for my guitar except for the neck and the pickup. But just to make sure I'm making a good decision, I need to start a thread Mighty Mite... would their necks be considered good quality necks? I'm thinking of getting just one of their strat necks with either rosewood or ebony fingerboard, and I just need to know if they are a good quality neck builder. Also... would Ebony sound brighter than rosewood? Thanks.
  8. Okay, this is cool. I have learned that the city I live in (Burlington Ontario) has a store/shop called Exotic woods, and I can pretty much get any kind of wood possible. At first I was looking at Mahogany because I know that mahogany will give me the sound I want. Does anyone know what other cool/different woods can give me the same tone? I don't care about weight. Here's the PDF list of their stock. http://www.exotic-woods.com/Products/stocklist.pdf PS. No soft woods.
  9. I have maple on my american deluxe strat, and I love it for what it is. It gives a nice punchy sound, I really like it for clean sounds, but I'd prefer Rosewood for distorted tones in my opinion. I've never tried an ebony fingerboard though. I also think that Maple is easier to play on, but that might just be 'cause I'm used to my own guitar. ....The guitar I'm making will have rosewood. PS. I think Maple fretboards look better than a darker fretboard on a light-er coloured guitar. My guitar would look bad with dark I think. http://photobucket.com/albums/v215/Sobot/?...nt=P1010105.jpg (by the way, you CAN see the wood grain on the finish, it's just the picture)
  10. ok thanks for the help everyone. I think I'm just going to route a hole perfect for the pot to fit in, thanks for the idea. with that "dual knob" pot I only need one hole for it, the rest can be shallow, because I'm only gonna have one pickup
  11. Hi, I'm in for another question I was looking at different pots for the guitar I'm making, and I don't know if the one I want will work... http://www.stewmac.com/catalog/images_1lg/3479_1lg.jpg The knob will go right through the wood (no pickguard) and the shaft on that knob isn't that long compared to ones on say... a les paul. Is it safe to make the body that thin where the knob will be? The shaft part is only 3/8 of an inch long. Thanks.
  12. wait a minute, I don't get it... .01 = bright .022 = in between .047 = muddy and deep??? wow, I am so lost
  13. Hey I thought that this question would be a good one to ask in this thread so... I'm making a guitar with only 1 pickup, a bridge positioned Humbucker, and it'll have a volume and tone. I have to use 500k pots. So should I use a .2 or .5 capacitor? I like the sound of putting the tone to zero on my strat on the bridge pickup, but this will be with a Seymour JB, so I don't know what I would like for that certain muffled sound when turned down.
  14. Wow... so many questions... but that's what a forum is for... I also need to know what I should ground to. Is there any possible way of NOT having to ground to the bridge? I don't know how I will ground to it if I have to. I'm getting this bridge: http://www.stewmac.com/catalog/images_1lg/0179_1lg.jpg Sorry again about the questions...
  15. Oh, and there are a few ground wires in that picture, when grounding them, can you connect all those ground wires together than solder them to the bridge???
  16. one problem, it says there I need one 500 K pot and one 250K pot. I'm putting the knobs directly through the wood and I can't get a 250K that is long enough.... will a 500K still work, would I have to change the cap from .022 to .050 or somthing?
  17. oh wow. haha thanks a lot.
  18. Alright, newbie here. This might seem to be an easy question for a lot of you... but I'm a bit lost... actually, let's say I was thrown into the middle of the pacific ocean with no compass. I need to wire a Seymour Duncan SH4 JB model Humbucker, 1 tone pot, 1 volume pot, and an output jack. Ive been searching the internet for diagrams, but everything I find has more than one pickup, and the switches just scare the crap out of me, just too many wires! I'm aware than I'm going to need to have a ground wire soldered to the bridge... and I don't know how I will do that because I'm using a Hardtail bridge... but that's for later. I just need to know what wiring and what directions I need to go. I'm pretty sure I need 500K-ohm pots, a mono jack, maybe a capacitor??? Nights of Columbus... Help Me! Thanks. P.S. Will this Melvyn Hiscock book help me with this? I tried to get it today, but the store was out of stock
  19. Good news. I now know exactly what I need to do to use the CNC router. And I already put my design into AutoCAD... and it's no longer a strat design! Thanks for the inputer guys. I WILL post pictures of it being made on the CNC table and once the body is done etc.... final product.... but that will come in a few weeks.
  20. Thanks for the help guys. By the way, I want the ring around the pickup, having no ring would make my design look too "bare" and not cool, I already drew it both ways.
  21. yes... it's not a rectangle, it has two cutaways on either side... wow, I'm such a newbie. I don't know if I need that or not.
  22. I'm starting to design and finish of stage 1 (planning) of my first guitar. I've already made the decision on the shape and all the components, neck, etc. Here's my question. will this router template: http://www.stewmac.com/catalog/images_1lg/1094_1lg.jpg ....work? I'm gonna have no pickguard and I will be using the mounting ring that goes around the pickup. I just don't know what those two notches are for in the template... I've never seen the mounting area of a guitar with humbuckers, and I need to know if that template will work with rings. ...I just don't wanna screw up with my expensive mahogany.... Thanks for any input.
  23. Alright thanks for your input. Yeah, I've heard of people saying that it's not truly homemade when you do CNC work But I'm only gonna do CNC for the shape of the body I'm planning on doing the routing myself for the neck joint area, the pickup, the jack, and... that's it, not trem.
  24. Hi. I'm new to the forum. I'm planning on making my own homemade guitar, and I have already planned out what I want it to look like, the pickups, hardware, etc. Here's the thing. My dad owns his own buisness and has 3 CNC router tables. I know for a fact I want to make my first guitar a strat shape, because it would be easy because I already have a strat. Anyways... Do you think It's be good to use the CNC? I think the hardest part would be to draw the strat on autocad or something, it would be hard to get all the exact measurments. I know that you can go and buy strat templates and stuff and use a bandsaw, but my dad doesn't have a bandsaw. SO what do you think? good idea? bad idea? Thanks for any input. PS. I'm using a 1 piece 20"x14"x1.75" piece of mahogany... and the guitar will hve 1 pickup and no pickguard.
