  1. Brushing on the laquer was a huge mistake, there was quite a few places where my brush strokes pulled the paint off. I got it all sanded down again and am re painting it this morning. I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and go buy a spray gun and air compressor. This weekend has definitely tested my patience from screwing up this paint job and scrapping a neck on my other build.
  2. UGHHHH!!! I'm so mad at myself right now... I decided that I was gonna rip these necks down closer to the width they needed to be and ended up scrapping one, I ended up cutting it a half inch narrower than it needed to be. I have no idea how I made this miscalculation, I'm a machinist so I pretty much measure all day every day. The one that I scrapped was the one that I was gonna use on this build and I was gonna use the other one on my tele, so now it looks like I'm gonna have to use the tele's neck on this guitar. Heres the good neck that I cut down closer to the width it needs to be.
  3. I was able to get the truss rod slots routed tonight, I need to decide on what kind of wood I want to go with for the fretboards. Hopefully I can figure that out tomorrow and get some more done on it this weekend. Im thinking I will just go with some sort of maple just to match up with the neck wood.
  4. Got some goodies in the mail today, now to see if I can make some progress on these necks this weekend. The bridge was a Valentine's Day gift from the lady of the house, she's pretty awesome!
  5. I'm not trying to talk you into anything you don't think that you can achieve yet but, don't psyche yourself out. This is also my first time making a neck, granted I'm making 2 but it really wasn't that hard! After making the scarf joint angled cut I saw how bad I did at cutting it and got really scared lol. But with the guidance from prostheta I was able to fix it and they turned out awesome. This is the jig he showed me, which I made and it turned out great.
  6. One question I have is, are you not doing a scarf joint or cutting in a headstock angle? I can't really tell by the pic but the board looks pretty thin to be cutting in an angle.
  7. I really need to practice on scraps for my neck shaping before I start but I'm so ready to get them done I don't know if I can hold out any longer.
  8. btw I really like the way this build is going, keep up the good work!
  9. I have to agree with prostheta, I really like the yellow but my all time favorite color is sea foam green so I would say the top one.
  10. ^^ sorry I don't know why it did that!! this is my first but by no means will it be my last, I have two friends that together want 3 guitars made. While I'm nowhere near ready to build and sell guitars I am going to make them for them and they will pay for materials. This will give me a bit more experience which will be a good thing in the long run. I do have a coworker that has a router table, he said I can use it whenever I need so that is the way I think I'm going to go. I don't have a whole lot of tools so just trying to work with what I got and by what I can on paydays. So him letting me use his stuff is a big plus! @old_picker , thank you for all of that! In that case I will do the heel adjusts and do the tele access, I will take a look at my tele tonight and see exactly what I need to do. That dowling jig looks like the ticket, I'll go ahead and make one of those this week at work.
  11. I took a look at those just now! I wish that I had a router table, I think that would make things so much simpler. Also, you really do some amazing work man!!
  12. Wow I really like this one!! I'll run down to the plastic company tomorrow and see what I can come up with. Mind explaining the template ring on the router? I'm thinking I could make a new base out of aluminum here on the lathe that has a ring coming off the bottom side of it but if you have an easier solution in interested.
  13. While I have y'all here, would y'all mind posting up your jigs for routing the slot? I'm not sure how I want to go about it just yet.
  14. I do have a scrap neck that I'm making along with the other 2 so I can try the brad point drill bit idea out on it. If i was to put the adjustment end at the nut would it be pretty much the exact way I'd be doing it with it at the heel? Or is there more involved in doing it there? I know Scott, you mentioned headstock angle. My headstock angle is 12 degrees if that matters any.
  15. I'm sorry I should have specified, I was planning on putting the adjustment end in the heel for simplicity. If you think that I should do it differently I am open to opinions. This is just my first time doing it and I felt that the heel would be the easier choice. Heres somepics from stewmac a website.
  16. Ok I just ordered my 2 low profile dual action truss rods from stew Mac with the router bit they sell for them. I am trying to see if anyone has used these and had an alternate way for reaming the hole for the adjustment area. Stewmac sells a reamer for this but I just couldn't bring myself to spend $50 for such a simple tool.
  17. Yep, you are correct in assuming that. It'll be right at the end of the control cavity.
  18. Thank you Scott! I will see what I can figure out tonight.
  19. My initial plan for the drilling is to drill a straight shot from the input jack hole into the bridge pickup cavity and then drill a hole from the treble side of the neck pocket thru the neck pickup cavity and into the bridge pickup cavity but the toggle switch wiring is where I'm getting screwed up. Are you saying I should drill thru the input jack hole all the way thru both pickup cavities and into the toggle cavity all in one shot?
  20. Ahh ok! Now that seems so much easier than what I was thinking in my head. Ok I'll do that instead then!!
  21. Thanks man! I did, I actually had to make 3 templates for each cavity. 1 for the cavity itself and 2 for the recess, I only had a 1" long router bit so I made 2 templates and stacked them on top of each other.
  22. I got my toggle cavity and vol/tone cavity routed tonight. Haven't had a chance to try and drill thru, I might do that tomorrow. Fingers crossed that it works!!
  23. So here's what I'm thinking about with the toggle cavity. Where it goes into a sharp point on the bottom right is about 1/2 an inch above and to the left (towards the neck) from the pickup cavity so I should be able to drill that thru.
