While it is a good product, it's worth remembering that it is quite specialist and really designed for us on light coloured woods.  The whitening in it, although very mild, will accumulate with any thick patches and, on a dark wood, show.  Thin enough, though, it doesn't.  This bass has black ebony in it...and with care, that stayed black.

i think you mean the inlays right?  I imagine you just had to really be careful not to put it on thick.

Ah...UK. Varnishes, paints and finishes tend not to transfer much between UK and US.  Most of the US products are not available in UK so maybe it's the same with Osmo?  Can you get any of their products over there?

sorry, yeah, after I posted I looked around and found some on amazon uk... but that's about it.  seems like a great product and not sure if there is a us equiv but I will look around and if not it seems like it might be worthwhile to pony up the extra shipping.  thanks again for the tip!

    Hi

I've got a full build on the horizon but have been catching up on a few bits and pieces - some for other folk and some on my own guitars and basses.

As part of that, one thing I do periodically, is remind myself what wood or unused components I have taking up space and which generally irritate MrsAndyjr1515.  Although that is one of the few great pleasures left in life, actually I do need to clear some space for the next load of mess I have planned

And I came across something I'd forgotten about - neck no.1 from the Psilos Bass build

so this pic here... was wondering if I could ask some questions about.  is this your build?  if so... is it this white in person or just in the photo?  I love how 'white' this piece is.  I'm assuming it's just light wood... wasn't bleached or anything?  beautiful.

also... looking fwd to the crazy acoustic you are going to do!

  4. that's a shame they are pretty sweet looking.  perhaps you can trim em down a bit?  that's the thing about doing things that are innovative and experimental... sometimes you have to do it a few times!  "things I did not know at first I learned by doing twice" billy joel.

neck.. yes a little relief is required as the strings move the most at their halfway point and if you compensate for that with the neck you can move them a bit closer.  probably not telling you anything you didn't know but honestly, as a younger man i always thought you wanted a straight neck... folks at the music shop always sayin "yup, she's straight as an arrow" kind of misled me!

This is a little late, but minimum you need a respirator with activated charcoal filters. Still not as good as a fresh air system, but better than nothing. If you have a beard, fumes will still get in. At least put a coat of vaseline on the edge to create a better seal.

Nitro is flammable even once dry, but needs a source. Nitro cures by evaporation, so it does not generate it's own heat like linseed oil. But put a match to it and you'll see a nice flame. It's base component is used in gun powder to give an idea.

i don't get notifications all the time so I missed your post... but wanted to say thanks for the advice!

  6. noice.  that third one there is soowheat.

I just got an email from downhomewoods that they got a bunch more carved tops in.  Some pretty sweet looking stuff too.  Honestly I need to stop collecting wood until my building catches up with my wood pile... but I gotta admit I was kinda thinking about it anyway!  currently I have two carve tops, 4 - 6 quilt tops, figured mahog, figured walnut, birdseye, figured redwood... and then a whole pile of flamed maple that's all 3/4 and some of it is wide enough to be resawn for tops, plus a couple 8' lengths of 8/4 flamed maple for solid body.  must... resist... urge... to... buy.... more... wood!

you never know when those sources will dry up tho!

    Hey Guys,

It's been a while since my last update but i finally managed to (almost) finish it now.

Yesterday i did the patina of the bronze. Not sure if i want it so dark, but we will see if i do some more touching up on it or not.

The screws who hold the plate to the body should become darker by doing some patinawork on it.

And that's it for now. In the next update it should be all strung up and finished.

    Greetings,

    B

that is starting to look pretty cool.  are you going to paint the body?  I could see it beeing really cool with flat black drybrushed with some bronze or some other sort of black/bronze combo.  Is it heavy?  nicely done.  thank you for sharing.

I can’t make up my mind on wether I want to attempt to match up the control cover using the Makore or just make a high contrast cover using Wenge (same material as neck).

would seem a shame to waste such a big and pretty piece of wood for just a few ctrl cavities.  I think as long as you tie it in by matching with something else... it'll look good, possibly even better.

I took the russian approach: it bent? Put it straight!

I used a piece of wood as support and carefully but firmly bent it with my hands (but first I removed all the moving parts). It's relatively soft, it may very well be Aluminum. First I straighten it out, but after checking on the guitar I saw that it fits better with a slight bend downwards, so I went back and bent it symmetrically. Now it sits very nicely on the curve of the top.

But now I have to find new elastic pins to replace the old ones that I damaged while removing them...

in mother russia... bigsby bend you.

great job man. looking forward to the blonde.

Thank you Mr Nat!  I'm working on her in the background.  the top if finished, and I'm slowly re-doing the binding.  it's slow going cause I do about 2" in the morning and 2" at night.  any more than that and it will bend away in one spot while you get it tight in another.

my progress may have just hit a brick wall tho because I bought a mesa triaxis and am going to have to re-arrange my rack to wire it up... which has me thinking... "why not build a nice hardwood studio rack?"  the pine one does the job so... "must... resist... urge... to... build... super-rack"

I picked it especially for the grain showing through.  Unfortunately the clear is ultra-thin and I have worn through to the raw wood on some of the sharp edges.  The wear will look cool over time, I guess.

right on... it probably would look good worn a bit.  now if only we can get goldmember to play it!  hehe.  I love gold stuff, not sure why others hate on it.
