The current plan is to have a clear epoxy or resin edge, if I can figure out how to day that and follow all the cool little contours. The edges under all the little points look like they were formed by some thick viscous molten semi liquid that was poured onto a a flat surface and cooled into the shape it flowed into. There are no voids in the top that pass all the way through to allow you to see the branches, What voids there are going to be filled with turquoise chips, or something similar and the with resin. At least that is the current plan.

sounds like a winner... look fwd to seeing it come to fruition.

Thanks Mike. I love the live edge.....but I don't think I can leave it like it is. All those sharp little protrusions look cool and will snag skin and clothes anytime someone passes to close. I have a feeling knocking them off and sanding them flush will result in bird's eye looking figure. Luckily I have lots of drops and scrap from the two previous burl top guitars I built, so I can do some experimenting before committing.

you know me... always trying to throw a wrench into your designs lol!  clear epoxy edge?  epoxy holes so you could see the branches through the top?  Well perhaps someday if I do one that will be what I'll do.  Your stuff is always inspiring!

    Thanks.

No glass. this is getting a maple burl slab on top. The last couple of pics in my first post shows it. I realize that was the better part of a year ago....I'll do a mock up with it in the next photo dump to refresh memories and see if it is still going to look like what's in my head.

    SR

now that you mention it... I do recall something about that.  was just thinking it'd be cool to see those tree limbs from the top down but even cooler to have a sweet burl there.  looking fwd to seeing that.  again, nice job.

I seem to get most of my ideas in dreams.

I built a few of them but I still have a few I haven't built.

One I had was an upholstered guitar maybe a silk fabric, Ya I know it sounds crazy but, if done right I think it could be cool!

i get a lot of ideas from daydreams.  meandering thoughts.

upholstered guitar - on the one hand crazy, on the other-  not as crazy as you might think.  I guess not really upholstery but the pink paisley is certainly similar.  similarly the jem 77fp used fabric intended for curtains.  zztop had someone create a furr guitar... altho also tech not upholstery.  i believe fender did a tweed/deluxe tele quite a few years ago and I have seen several since including one of the members here who recently did a lovely tweed tele.

pretty sure there is a high end builder who did a silk dragon fabric top guitar but his name escapes me.  Starts with "R"?  Have often thought of doing a jem and using some sort of silk flower fabric... would be pretty cool.

I will def follow your thread if you do so... looking fwd to seeing what avenue you take.

  5. if someone can steal your design just by looking at your guitar... then it likely isn't that unique.  I probably wouldn't hand out my cnc files... but I've provided enough documentation on most of what I've built that if someone had moderate skills they could most certainly do what I've done.

I think that you are only as good as your next idea and there is almost nothing that one could give away afa guitar building that someone else couldn't figure out on their own.  most the wiring is so simple you couldn't even copyright it if you wanted to.  about the only thing you COULD preserve is your own headstock design or perhaps a unique shape... but even then all someone else would have to do is make a slight variation on it and it's likely not going to  be worth it for you to go after them.  I think the things that make a builder really great are within that builder and it'd be next to impossible to steal that.

better to concentrate on making the best guitar in the world!

Would a longer ramp help? One that will lift the bit off the surface...

Would it help w safety?  i dunno.  it would help w smoothness of the curve... but it is already going to require a fairly long bit... and afa I know 2.5" is about as long as you are going to find and as factor in the base plate of the router, and how much of the bit would be exposed as you raise up the edge of the router my guess is it is going to barely be practical as is.  but whatdoiknow lol.

  7. i don't think there would be any easy ways to do it... at least not that I can think of.  I would think you'd need to build a jig that is sort of like a ramp at one end that would lift one side of the router up as you approach the pull out spot.  the trick would be that you need to ramp out... and then hold the router there as you shut it down... which is a fairly dangerous/precarious position... or perhaps carefully lift it off the jig once the bit exits.  that's the best I can think of.

  8. if you are getting his when you touch the strings... r u sure you didn't wire your output jack backwards?  double check that.  make sure the neg is going to the ring and the pos going to the tip.  also make sure it isn't making contact with anything.

That is an option I'm considering. The jury is still out. I did another carving in the past that featured wood and rocks, and I smoothed the rocks and left the wood rough carved, and that was cool too. Rough carving leaves a bunch of places that are chipped, torn, splintered and raw fibers all over the place. Those create their own special joys in the finishing process.....so the jury is still out.

Dogs can be deadly, but in a relatively small space. You can hold your breath and walk out of them.

And, not  at all. Anytime you can make your wife smile is money in the bank.

    And, thanks!

    SR

yes, our dog is just a rat terrier... but she gets those duck treats in her and lookout.  my wife did laugh hehe.

btw I hope on this project... maybe this is the one you will leave it all "bumpy"?  I know, I know... it'll look cool smoothed out too... but it looks really great and you can see a thousand chisel strikes right there in the piece.

Sometimes you have been married just long enough.

Last night I came in from the back porch where I pretty much spend all my evenings, and said good night to my wife as she rocked in her lounger, watching TV and eating what I assumed to be her dinner.  It was a bowl full of sliced cucumbers. I said night baby, are you planning on farting all night?

M y bride of thirty five years nailed the response.

With very wide eyes, a tiny curl on her lips, she asked in a little girl voice: " You want me to?"

It was perfect! I broke up, and said "Hell no!"

Thirty five years of farty nights was more than enough. It's awesome to be married to a woman with her since of timing and delivery though!

    Cheers!

hehe... you don't make it to 35 years without some farts lol.  Have only made it (carry the one) 27 here but in that time I've realized that there is always going to be one of two that will want more sex, one of two who will do all the cleaning, one of two who will spend all the money, one of two who is responsible and does the bookkeeping... and if you are lucky you get to see that flipped back and forth between the two.  that said, I have pretty consistently been the farter, but lately our dog has been giving me a hellofa run for my money.  haha!

I hope you won't mind that I share your story w my wife lolz.

also... table is coming along right nicely.
