    It might have to do with the piece you are using. Purple Heart frequently has subtle irregularities that can affect the color. I've never had a problem with it. Also, you might want to try a light stain.

    Generally speaking, there won't be much tonal difference between woods as long as you avoid knots and checks. if you laminate wood, be sure you get a solid joint!!

    It can be done, but spalted maple is not as strong as regular so be careful. Check ebay for the wood. Do you know the answer to my burl neck question?
