  1. As westhermann said they are all light color wood. It soulds like you want to have a subtle grain showing through the paint. If so, I'd recommend Alder. Sometimes Basswood and Poplar has so little visible grain that you wouldn't see any if covered by paint.
  2. I emailed the wood store to see if they were set up for drop-in business and got a reply that they are reorganizing with a new name, Far West Specialty Woods, and will be down for a while they move. I'll try to check them out when it's up and running. My avatar axe is a familiar shape, with a few slight differences: Arrowhead headstock shape and the top carve is pretty non-standard.

  5. Maybe you could find someone making other instruments (are mandolin's FBs narrow enough?) who would love it and get your money back.
  6. I'm going to use a Stew-Mac blend pot on my next guitar. It is basically a Gibson/Hamer Maple on Mahogany double cut using old (1979) Gibson HBs. I'll let you know how I like it when it's done. Gonna be a month or so. I liked the idea of adding a little bridge cut to the mellow neck tone (or vice versa) and the SM pot has a detent in the middle so you can have some idea where you are...
  7. Glad to be here. My Avatar is an old picture of one that I hope to finish fairly soon. I work slowly. It now has a carved top.
  8. On the filler, try using an old credit card or similar object to apply the filler. You want to force the stuff into the pores and I suspect the diaper is soaking up half the filler. I also am unsure as to the filler you are using. The stuff you want is called GRAIN filler and should come from a paint store (two brands I have are Behlen and Woodperfect). Not wood filler, which is basically wood putty and is meant to fill in gaps much bigger than pores. My difficulty in filling wood has been that the stuff is too opaque for most lighter woods and masks the figure. I gave up trying to fill a lacewood top and just live with it being lightly pored. If anyone knows of a truly transparent grain filler that works well, please let me know.
  9. I live a few hours south of Recofor and will try to check them out next time I head north. The prices do seem great and being able to see things in person (and bringing a tape measure) beats the web by a mile. If they do seem good, I'll post about it (might be a few months though...). I have been to Gilmer and that is a trip. They have about 250% of what should fit in that old barn. Lots of cool stuff crammed into corners or stacked to NBA height. The Northwest is great for maple.
