  1. Here a few for progress pics. the first ones a picture of the front with the neck rough cut and top wing clamped on while the glue dries. this next on is a picture of the back. I cut back the throughneck and laminated it with walnut to match the wings. I dont know if you can tell by the picture but the wing is angled towards the back. This should make the body curve around the players body after shaping. (I hope)
  2. Hi again, I got the trussrod and side dots from stewmac (fast!). So, I finally got the fret board glued on the neck. I hope to have update pictures tommorrow after I cut the neck profile on the band saw.
  3. I'm not sure if the pictured guitar is mahagony or maple. My top is maple. thanks for the info though. I've never acually used dyes on wood yet. I can use all the help I can get.
  4. hi, I've been busy around the house today. Lovecraft: The optical system I'm planning on is the lightwave 5string setup. Its about $450US dollars. I know it sounds like alot, but when you figure in everything that it replaces, it's really not that much....bridge, preamp, pickups, not to mention jacks and knobs. He**, a good 5string bridge will cost well over $100 alone. I've played one bass with the lighwave system on it and it sounded amazing! A lot lower and higher bass response. I've got a 1980's spector with a bartolini p and j setup and 18v preamp, and it sounds almost passive compared to the lightwave bass. The only problem I can see happening is the new bass not turning out to be worthy of that kind of investment. but, (nock on wood) things seem to be working out so far. BTW I think I've come up with a idea for the stain. One of our cats, Tigger , has past away over to weekend from something called FIP. I think I'm going to stain the top orangish-brown, like him, as a tribute. "The Tigger-burst". I know thats a little corny but WTH, he was a very cool cat. Then I can just concentrate the carriburst after this bass. kinda like this one but with a black stain to bring out the figuring.
  5. Hi again, I made a little progress on the fretboard. It took a little while to measure and cut the slots for the frets. I cut it for 35.25" and 28 frets. I'm not worried about having room for a neck pickup because I'll be putting an optical bridge pickup on this bass. Anyway, here's a picture of the slotted fretboard. I'm waiting on stewmac for the truss rod so I can shape the neck. I want it at least roughly shaped before I join it to the body. Hopefully it will get here early next week.
  6. beautiful finish! I love the figuring.
  7. Sorry wes, didn't mean to step on any ...toes. Anyway, I finally got to the cabinet shop to plane my pieces. While I was there the shop forman said he had a peice of exotic wood I'd like. So he ended up giving me a 7 foot peice of figured 4/4 bubinga. I don't think he even knew what it was. So now I've got a jump on my next project. Well, here's some more pics. The first is the bookmatched top ready for the saw. Next is the back and neck back peices. And finally the laminated neck, and fretboard.
  8. Hi I just thought I'd tell ya, I'm making a neck thru. and posting the pics here link I'm not making a tutorial yet but I am trying to take alot of pics. Its a bass though. not a guitar.
  9. Thanks for the kind words. I love single cut basses too! I'm kinda going for a cross between a benevente and a bolin ns bass. Well I got all the pieces cut and ready for the planer tommorow. Here's a picture of the pieces, and a guest appearence by my cat Smoker Joe. Check out the eyes in the fretboard I kinda got lucky finding that wood at the sawmill. and here's another picture of the top before bookmatching. I'm gonna take pictures throughout the whole process, in case I do the finish in carriburst (tutorial) I can keep posting them if you guys want to see em. Otherwise I'll just wait for end to post em.
  10. Hi all, Well, here's the patterns for the neckthru 5 string I'm starting next. I'll be using walnut for the back body, flamed maple for the top, and a combination of birds eye maple and walnut and curly maple for the neckthru. Please tell me what you think good or bad. I haven't done a neck thru yet. so feel free to pick on me like I was the milkman's kid. This is the wood I'm using for the top. I'm not sure if I going to carriburst it or not. This is the birdseye I want to use for the neck and the fretboard. ... and here's a picture of all the wood plus the walnut I just got today. Sorry about the blurry pics. My camera sux.
  11. Nice wood Hyunsu, you always take great pics.
  12. Hi all, I'm doing two guitars right now. I'm not sure wich one I want to carriburst. I guess it depends on what they look like after they're together. I'm entering something though. good luck everybody!
  13. Maybe this could help picture I want to put black lines in between my laminations like this one. except not as thick. I don't know what material to use as the black line.
  14. I'm about to start a neck thru bass. What different types of material can I use to accent the laminations in the body? I looked at ormsby's PRS style guitar (fantastic). On his website he said he boiled maple veneer in dye. Does anyone have any other methods, or even a tutorial on the dyeing process. I'm afraid that I'd laminate pieces with veneer in between and find out it wasn't dyed all the way through when I start to shape it.
  15. I'm in the same boat as you. except I got the wood yesterday. I've printed out a bunch of different style top and bottom horns and I'm just kinda mixing and matching to see what looks good. I think I'm going with a single cut top (bass). Looking at the body in full scale helps ALOT! good luck.
  16. Getty Is one of my Bass heros, along with Geezer, Ox, and McCartney. Another fantastic bassist that never gets any credit is Bruce Thomas from Elvis Costello and the Attractions.
  17. Sorry, If this has already been covered in this thread. (its a long thread) Can I ask the forum for tips? or does it have to be done all by yourself? I'd like to throw my hat in the ring, just because it sounds fun, and I've got a strat I wan't to refinish with maple. Unfortunatly, I've never done any kind of burst finish. Whats the rule on that?
  18. Thanks, I was kinda thinking that was the case. I'm gonna have to think about this one. I don't want to devalue it, but it's starting to be easily scratched because of the finish is getting brittle. I'm starting to not want to play it. How can I tell if its nitro laquer or shallac? Maybe I could just get it french polished. I tried talking to guild (fender) but there's really no-one left that had anything to do with the new jersey shop guitars. BTW: great site and forum , It's the best of its kind on the net IMO. Lots of info in one spot.
  19. I have an heirloom guitar given to me by my dad. It is a 1963 hand made guild archtop acoustic. It has 2 fholes on each side and no horns cut in to it. its got a blood red sunburst finish with white binding. I eventually want to give this guitar to my daughter after she has children. It is in good shape for its age but lately I was thinking about making it look new and preserved so it will last for a couple more generations. Would that ruin the guitar? somehow? or Is there some way to do it "legitimately"? I know there's alot of vintage guitar people in this forum. I lurk around here quite a bit. any advice would be appreciated.
  20. I didn't seriously start to learn the bass guitar until I was 14. My brother 16 needed a bass player for his band. My Mom and Dad are both musicians. Mom plays the pipe organ and the harp, and dad plays classical and spanish guitar. My brother picked up fingerstyle spanish guitar by ear at age 6 and was reading music by 7. (the son of a B*^%&) Anyway I'm 32 now, been playin in blues, rock, metal, and punk bands ever since, and I've just started to tinker around with guitars and basses, now that I have more than one .
  21. nice bass! how heavy did that walnut end up being?. Love that clean ebony fretboard. Glueless? like chrysalis?
