  1. Nice selection of woods. I like the "Ritterish" design, it is very similar to a build I have on the drawing board right now. What software did you use to draw up your design? I would like to move into the realm of computer aided drawing from just sketching on paper, but I am nowhere near being a computer geek and I need something with a relatively easy learning curve (and low cost). Cheers, Greg I use Corel Draw......not an easy program, nor is it cheap. I don't know what to suggest that's cheap?
  2. Guess this will turn into a thread for my sons shortscale too! Larry shipped some wood for this and we let it sit for a while, it's been in the 80's here so we let it settle. Check out the figure in the ebony board he sent, man this is gonna be cool. The body core is Alder (below the ebony) and it is light! This is going to be perfect for my son. I thought it would be cool to give this bass some kid mojo, so I suggested my son write some things in between the laminates. It was all up to him what to write. He wrote things like Music, love, no war, Luck, and even wrote Green Day rules.......he he, what an 11 year old! Writing on the lams That's my boy! He's gonna have fun! He's helping with the glue too! Helping with the neck glue We got plenty on there! All glued and clamped This top is going to look very cool! Figured Walnut
  3. 34" from where the string hits the nut to where the string hits the saddle.
  4. 30.5" scale Alder body with Walnut outside lams and flame maple in the center of the neck. Then I'm hoping to get a good top out of this old redwood coffee table I found in my basement.
  5. Going slow because I'm waiting for wood to do a short scale bass for my 11 year old son and I want to have him help with his at the same time as I'm doing mine.......I figured I could glue mine up though, that way once his is glued we'll be ready for some neck work. Neck is first............I love the contrast between the Bloodwood and Padauk and Ebony.........and it feels pretty light too. closer view Then on to the bodywing sandwich. I know some of those extra clamps are the crappy kind, but there's plenty going on! Body Wing Clamps O' Plenty
  6. I didn't have it stabilized. I'm not sure how it will do, but I left the fingerboard choice up to Larry and I trust him. He knows a lot. I'll let you know in 2-4 months I can't wait to build this thing, man those woods are calling me.
  7. That is the fretboard I'm using. It should look killer, I'm not sure how to finish it though? I was planning on Tru-oil on the bass, but I'll want the fretboard to match........maybe a wipe on poly?
  8. I'm seriously considering making my own bridge on this one. I'm still kicking around spacing. It will be 1.75" at the nut.
  9. I love the fanned fret, It's been on 5 or 6 gigs with me already. I also want a four stringer for some of the gigs I do. That and I really wanted to try something different from that bass. And yes on the no radius, but I'm going to go thinner on the neck. I went to .97 on my fanned fret and it feels a little thick.
  10. Let me start with why I'm going with 36" scale. I'm 6'7" so I'm thinking the length will help on my wrists. Wood shipped today! I'm so happy. Larry at Gallery Hardwoods really took care of me on this one. I left some ideas open and he went through and picked some great wood! I wanted a very organic feel with yellows, reds, and oranges......It's been dubbed "Desert Sunrise". Neck: Bloodwood, Calico Padauk, Ebony Body: Canarywood core, curly myrtlewood for an accent lam between body and neck. Top: Goncalo Alves with some great figure! FretBoard: Match the top with some insane Goncalo Alves. I have a set of Nordstrand Dual Coils to put in this guy....No pre-amp yet. Without the top (man is that some nice canarywood) Body Here's the top With top This is the tenative shape for this one. Design
  11. It would be neat to have touch sensitive L.E.D.s that light when you hit each fret. I'm sure something like it has been done but who cares.
  12. I love the flow of the carving you did. That a very nice and unique shape. Killer!
  13. Any idea on weight at this point? My woods were close to the same and it ended up just over 10lbs.
  14. Really looking good! I'm digging the overall design as well. I bet this will sound great!
  15. I voted for me (I felt obligated )........Although for true craftmanship Skelf has one helluva bass going there! All great builds for sure! Everyone on this board was kind and helpful when I asked, for that I thank you all! I played the hell out of my bass last week, and I can't tell you how cool it is to play an instrument you built for yourself (I'm sure most of you know, but for anyone thinking about it, GO FOR IT)
  16. Make sure you use something that isn't too slippery for templates so when you've clamped the template to the wood to route with a template bit nothing slips. I almost lost my neck while routing the taper because I used a piece of cabinet wood that had a slippery coating on it. I threw that out and bought a nice piece of MDF for all future templates. And, always bring your plunge router up before turning it off, there's a kick when you turn it on and off that can nick the sides of things.
  17. Here's a busy little line to give an idea of sound.........Everything set flat with no effects and recorded directly to Garageband through a Tascam u122. I put the drum track in to keep it from being to boring...... 28 second clip
  18. I'll put a clip on my build thread
  19. I really like your work...............good stuff. One of these days I'm going to order a preamp from you as well...........Great job!
  20. How did you like the sound of the bass in a live setting? I really liked it. It has a nice mid range sound with some bite.............It's not hard to cut through with a 3 piece, but it's hard to tame it down...........I was able to do so with no problems........Worked great!
  21. felt obligated to post a live shot to prove I play it. And one more....with a pick!! Rock on! Playing a chord in open G
  22. Looking Great...........that scarf looks great! Looking forward to the progress..........oh, and on those bridges, you can pull the individual saddles off and file the bottom if you need to go lower. I did that to get out of needing to route channels to lower the entire bridge pieces. Although I remember in a post you had already compensated for that. I like the body shape a lot too.
