  1. I got a new Dremel 330 router base for inlay/rosette work. the center hole thing it comes with measeures 2.25 inches from center, so I have to adjust this to 2" for center holes. The base is acrylic, I may just mount a separate acrylic base to this with the hole in it, but Id like to to be somewhat adjustable,a nd I had bad luck with acrylic cracking a few times. Is there any tricks out there to cutting / drilling clear acrylic? Thanks
  2. Does anyone use a single round variable file to do nuts and bridge work, or do you use the exact gauge file for strings? Cumpliano shows a cheaper way to do it- just one variable round file., unless its a $40 file. I know some locksmith files run $40.00 new...then I'd just pop for 6 files...
  3. Cumpianos book, and Kinkead, and a rented DVD that had pictures only, no video, but voice over, forgot who this guys is, but the DVD would be worth the $30.00. It was $12.00 to rent it. I use kinkeads book ALOT *library checkout), plus stuff learned on 13th fret and this site. I got go bar dishes after talking to a guitar wood supplier, he just started using them, said they are a must, he never could get the backs just right.... Im at around $1500.00+ for tools also, $@#@##@ thats the one thing I hate. Then there is the wood accumulation, I cant use half the stuff I got (beginner), (good deals, really good wood) I am using flatirons to bend the wood, not a round thingy, but I will use a pipe. Oh, then there is the construction, man, its like art, its like woodcarving, its gooooood!!!!! It helps power through those "$@#@@ another $100.00 bucks" moments.... base carving braces while watching TV, and putting the curve on em, awsome. Im a woody=)....! Im transitioning from major tone freak to major, its my tone freak. I look at nice guitars, and crappy ones, to see if I can see the difference. Cunpianos book will have you overbuilding on your first try if you use his measurements, so ask ask ask if you want a good first one..........
  4. Thanks, we'll see how it works with 1/4 " depth cuts. The trick is go slow, a MM at a time to start out. Let the blade do the cutting and keep it sharp. What is the best stuff to seal the spruce with to stop tear out? I have Shellac, but its very brown and stinky. Thanks
  5. The Depth gage on my Delta Drill press went out (after 1/2 our of total usage) So Im still on Lowes 90 day warantee, its going back but its a pain in the butt to do. I would recomend getting an extended warrantee with all this crap from China. Be very wary of USED power tools also. This chinese crap is falling apart left and right. Its a joke. #@#@^)*)* Craftsman has a lifetime warantee, dont they? If you can take back the delta, and say its broke, whatever. Its all chinese made crap anyway.......try craigslist for used old tools made in America if you go that rout, but used+ power tools = trouble. But sometimes older stuff like and older bansaw is all metal parts and a motor, nothing to really break. I like older craftsman drill presses also, solid, no nonsense.... $@#@#@ chinse crap.
  6. Ok, cool, thanks, - Beat ya by a second there Fryovanni! Yea, a screamin rotozip by a guitar does make me ,..... a bit nervous.
  7. Just tried out my hand binder on some Mahogany neck wood and it works fine. Thats what I will use for the first few.
  8. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Routing_...er_Bit_Set.html Cool, will this work with a rotozip? Anyone know? Ill probably try hand routing first, if its too much, I know were to go! Thanks
  9. Aye! didnt know that. What I would do ( ) is seal the edge, and run a blade over it, to get an initial clean cut on the top. This is what you do in woodcarving to get clean cuts. Then I wu just do it by hand, steady steady hand. Where is a good place to get bearings? Anyone know if you can put bearings on any bit, like for a rotozip, which takes router bits? http://eagleamerica.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E...42_A_cn_E_56019 Ok this looks like a good bit, you just need to use different bearings?- Im getting a 'glue up' sawblade from these guys. States that you just run it through the blade, and its ready to glue up. Not sure if its luthier quality, Ill know in a week.
  10. Yea, I have a Tacoma guitar, DM9, its a $500. guitar, and there are no extras. Solid wood and all, good sound, but the saddle and nut is done poorly. I pop strings when I bang it. Looking at kinkeads book, the strings should sit at the halfway or more in the saddle. Can wait to get my file set and do it right.
  11. Exellent, but what do you use for a depth stop>? I may just do the first ones by hand...
  12. Ok, Im wondering if there are bearings to use when cutting a binding channel, for depth, with a rounter. How do you set up the trim router to do this? THanks
  13. Hey. is that your second guitar? It sound pretty good! What woods are it made of? Whats your top chickness, what will you do on your next one to improve it?
  14. Cool! Audacity is a free MP3 program that converts soundfiles to MP3 format for anyone who cant convert. It will do WINmedia files and stuff. and its FREE!! I use my soundblaster card, Its still only 16 bit but its ok.
  15. How about rotozip for doing binding work, with a downdraft bit? How do you set the depth?
  16. Im looking for logo lettering for my logo. Any sources out there? Photoshop doesnt have it, but maybe an add on would do it. Been looking, nothing I like yet..
  17. How accurate are you? If you can inlay it and sand it level without sanding through it would work. Also it will be pretty delicate when you cut it to shape. Normally I make my rosettes .035-.045"(1/42" veneer is like .025"). You can go as thin as you can work with. Peace,Rich Cool, - Thx!
  18. Yea, Im not counting those, or finishing, as its about 3 hours work, with 3 weeks dry time etc....I will also be doing 2 at once more or less, to a point, so 2 tops get rosettes, 2 necks to glue up, plane cut wood, etc. Thx Two is not a good idea on your first run at using new jigs, and techniques(IMO). If you have never build an acoustic you are really moving blindly forward in terms of brace shaping, thickness of top/back sides, bridge shape/weight, and so on. You would do well to stick with one at a time until you have your tools and methods dialed in, and you have a feel for the materials you are using. Of course everyone has their own idea of how to move forward learning these things. Just be sure you take careful note of weights, thicknesses and so forth. Peace,Rich Yea, it might be good to see how the first top comes out on a set, as they are the same wood. Hey, What about 1/42 Veneer wood for rosettes? Ive seen some nice cheap stuff on ebay, do you have to glue up 2 or 3 to do this? Thanks
  19. Yea, Im not counting those, or finishing, as its about 3 hours work, with 3 weeks dry time etc....I will also be doing 2 at once more or less, to a point, so 2 tops get rosettes, 2 necks to glue up, plane cut wood, etc. Thx
  20. Id like to hear what your best stuff sounds like, anyone have some links to builders mp3s?
  21. Just wondering for planning purposes, how long the average dread takes to build. I know the first few will be slow, but whats your average hours? Ive heard 200 hrs being knocked around alot. Thanks
  22. Anyone know where to get one of those old style dremel router deals as seen in Johnathan Kinkeads book? He uses it for rosette cutting.
  23. Ok, saw the sheet metal in the hvac dept. 34" x 22 for like $7.00 - cant go wrong, but the bender on blueridge just uses 1/2 round slats, might go with that, and aluminum foil over the wood. Looks good, getting there. My birtch plywood dishes will be ready in 3 weeks for backs and tops. Just need to get the backs glued up and (straitened) out a bit. Thanks!!
