  1. hey im also a lefty.. warmoth.com has nut files for $8.00 but i think there odd sized an x-acto saw works well to get a groove started with a bit of fine (1500) grit sand paper and a thin sheet of tin or aluminum inside to keep the sandpaper from wondering about in the groove you can slot yours for a few bucks.. like so: sandpaper folded around tin > \|/ ........................... slot in nut: -v-v-v etc i looked pretty much everywhere for pre slotted lefty nuts i couldnt find any so i bit the bullet and bought some blanks its not too hard really just go slow ...really slow when ur sawing or sanding take your time and itll turn out great just my two cent good luck
  2. well ..here is a lil recording of the pedal.. ibanez grx20 >behringer x-vamp>behringer ub502 mixer >computer recorded with audacity if the link is posted wrong or somethign just slap me my mp3
  3. well i really dont have a great answer for you but what i would do is either use a piezo bridge on a regular electric with a decent acoustic pedal or just get one of those stands that holds the acoustic at perfect height to play while standing .. sorry i cant be more help ..people will eventually give you more answers ... welcome to the forum
  4. just thought i would update.. i got the behringer x-vamp cause a buddy sold me his v for 100 bucks so i was kinda skint after that purchase.. it arrived i opened it hmm it sounded ok.. i played with the distortion a lil nothing super heavy like i wanted but decent lots of harmonic squeals and my ibanez's tone came thru nice.. like a lil more than ac/dc but not quite pantera if you can imagine it.. so i read the manual wich sux btw .. lol i keep playing with the buttons then i find the amp modeling and OMG shred city lol this thing definatley has more gain than you need lol i really like it.. the wah kinda sux i think but i have a real wah so no big deal .. but yeah so far this thing far surpassed what i thought it would for 70 bucks ill see if i can record some sunday and put it online
  5. Daddario's on all my guitars ibanez=10's strat =12's acoustic 12 string =phosphor bronze extra light they dont seam to break no matter how much i bend or hammer on them played em so long now i dont even try other brands
  6. haha thanks guys yeh i was thinking of getting the gnx1 after listening to some demos.. but a buddy said i could buy his flying vee for 100 bucks.. so now i dont know what to do ) ...i think im gonna get the guitar (its a no name) lol not a scratch on it.. 24 frets ...floyd rose(lisenced) .. 2 sucky pu's but that easy to change..eentually il have to convert it to lefty but heck.. i think its a decent deal on it . yah i dont have a huge music store around here .. the one i got close has a few boss pedals but there old guys they think overdrive is all anyone needs :| so im still looking at a pedal maybe the rp series or vamp .. vamp sounds pretty good from what ive heard.. digitech distortion sounds like compressed or something ..i dunno those gnx pedals r sweet though they got all kinds of techo gadgets built in lol
  7. cool thanks man maybe its just realplayer making musicians freind sound diff i dunno the mp3 sounds cool heading over to digitechs site now
  8. flying V here also.. lots of people say that the cant play em sitting but i like putting my knee in the middle of it to hold it up the neck angle suits me perfectly.. eh what do i know lol rock on
  9. maiden69 you happen to have any recordings of the gnx1 by any chance ? i figure if i sell my pedals i could get it fairly quickly.. i listented to the sound clips @ musicians freind ..to be honest none of there recordings sound right lol ... on any effect from any company lol..
  10. hmm well on that note... can anyone name anything amp or multi effects $100 bucks or under i can plug my headphones into and jam on .. i dont wanna spend alot i mean i got a wah pedal, delay pedal, and a chorus pedal i just want some thing with some decent shreddy gain till i can afford a half stack im pretty tired of jamming on practice amps anyhow thanks .. yeah the gnx1 and boss me50 look nice n all but really i just want somethign to get me by for a couple of months
  11. so my lil practice amp died and i cant play my electric and i was looking at the behringer xvamp or the digitech rp50 .. they both have multi effects but mainly i just need something i can plug my headphones into and have some decent distortion/reverb and such any of you got opinions on either one ... trying to stay under 100 bucks here ... heh
  12. EMG-dg20's ordered so in a few weeks ill have the strat refinished and put back together and ill try to borrow a cam to take some pics along the way YAY i cant wait and yeah i will try the wah b4 or after diff peices of the efects chain to see what i like .. and hopefully i can find "my tone" well the metal master does do a fair bt of eq work it has a "low" "hi"and a control labled morph that is essintally a scoop control full left give a pro co rat type of sound middle is a metal zone pedal type of 80's metallica sound and all the way to the right is a "nu" metal type of sound .. sorry for the poor explanation but thats the best i can give *shrugs* the vamp on the otherhand has beautifull sounds ranging from the old 60 fuzz to the hardest death tones and everythign in between .. so im pretty well set for distortion and i can dial in about any sound i want .. just never tryed using the eq>dist>eq setup b4 thanks everyone
  13. well i read the 2 links that were posted ...about getting great tone.. and all well i dont have 3 eq pedals ..but would the following work to try it out ok heres what im thinking with the gear i have: hook my guitar into my zoom bfx708 ( i know its a bass pedal but i like it for guitar) use it with no effects except eq only then my digitech metal master "heavy metal distortion" pedal then my beringher vamp2 with just eq and no effects then into my amp .. i dont got a power break but i live in the back of beyond so i can jam loud as i want really ... just wondering if that would work decent i mean both the bxf708 and the vamp2 have fairly decent eq's on them .. and it sounds interesting enough to try out ... i dont have enough "interconnects" tonight to try it or i would.. but tomarrow in gonna pick up a few short 1/4" cables ... also .. where would a wah pedal go in a effects chain like that ?
  14. well i am not quite shure what he meant by boost the mids ... becasue yeah it would sound bad to me.. personally what i do for blues, rock stlyes is set my amp like so.. Bass 5-7 mids 5-7 treble 7-10 gain 5 vol - 5-6 with that on my strat i get a nice creamy sound running thru the amp alone (crate g600) this gives me a nice clean tone with just enough bite to respond to my picking dynamics ..a smooth picking stlye gives me nice and clean and if i pick a bit hard i get a nice on the edge sound and for a harder edge i just up the gain a lil for a metal sound i use my digitech heavy metal distortion pedal it has a knob to scoop the mids and whatnot it gives anywhere from randy roahds to old metallica, megadeath, pantera etc and leave my amp settings alone but i use my ibanez whene playing metal stlyes .. just my $0.02 cents ..
  15. yeah i would definatley scoop the mids and boost teh treble and bass with the onboard cuircuitry of the dg20 setup.. wish there were cool music stores around here but the closest one i know of that even carries emg stuff is like 4 hours from here :| lol but yeah i think the dg20 will work if nothing else i can always unhook the bridge pickup and cut out my pickgaurd and adda emg 81 or 85 later on my strat is routed for H/S/H allready just been using it with 3 singles but yeah it came pre routed so.. on another note.. i know the emg setups use a battery under the pickgaurd.. seems like it would be a bitch to change if it was under there .. i wonder if i should get a battery box and put it in the back of the guitar maybe..
  16. yes i know about all of there setups (emginc.com's stuff) but metal isnt really my meat and potatoes so to speak .. i mean i got an ibanez with humbuckers if i wanna play some serious metal ..just wondering about the momnets when i wanna just rip it up on my strat ive been listening to the delicate sound of thunder,p.u.l.s.e and such alot the last few days just digging the singing sound of his strat .. (of course a highwatt head would help lol) i mean i dont like any stock strat pickups ive heard.. so those are out and i dont really dig the sound of seymour duncans ..so i figured the emd dg20 would be cool .. i just wish i could hear them b4 i had to buy them on more styles of music than david gilmore stuff ... anyone know any other people who use the dg20 setup ?
  17. man those r cool wonder what they sound like...
  18. Help choosing pickups im refinishing my strat(slight mods scalloped neck 17-21,hardtail conversion, quilted maple veneer) and figured i would get some new pickups for xmas im considering the emg david gilmore setup my style is a mix of blues, floyd, pumpkins, pantera type sound .. i know the pickups would be great for blues, alternative, and 60's type rock but do they get a decent shred/metal type of sound?? all the reveiws ive read some people say they do and some say there crap for a metal type sound .. right now my rig consits of a crate g600 head, beringher 4x12 cab,V-amp pro ,crybaby wah, zoom bfx-708 i know its for bass but gets crazy sounds on guitar lol, and a digitech metal master "heavy metal distortion" pedal just wondering if i would be able to get more of a shred sound out of it with the emg dg20 setup or if i should use somethign else... i really dont play that much metal i guess... just to show off for freinds usually i play more blues/rock and alternative styles..but i do like to be able to break into a wild solo every now and then.. just wondering if any of you know about this emg dg20 setup and if it has the options to do what i want because not a single guitar shop around here has anything made by emg so i cant try them out b4 ordering please advise me chuck
  19. yeah guys i think im gonna order a floyd and see about putting it on my strat first then i wont mess up my other body im planning on building up i mean i could loose the strat and it wouldnt break my heart.. also thinking about learning how to veneer on the strat it really really needs a refinish anyway just think it would be good to practice on something i dont mind messing up then i should have no problem doing it on the guitar im building myself (i hope) i really do appreciate all of your feedback and comments this is like the best guitar forum and coolest website ive found :D i think i might stay a while chuck
  20. i need a book so what book for setting up floyd type tremolos and figuring out the neck radius and all would you guys recommend cuz all that ^ is beyond what i understand ... i just want somethign that screams heavy metal guitar ) grr lol i dont know how to explain it.. i want that sound .. you know that full on shred sound screaming harmonics ..a whammy bar i can go nuts with and not have to retune after wild bar dropping antics and 24 frets ! ! ! (yes i know how to do pinch harmoics and such .. its just my crap 200.00 ibanez compared to a $1000.00 jackson makes a world of diffence lol) i know i could buy what i want for like $700.00 bucks.. but that kinda defeats the point of doing it myself .. also ive been pondering pickup selection (even though its far off from now) anyone used the emg hz pickups yet ? been thinking about those or possibly a 81bridge 85 neck and a single coil in the middle position if i can fit it all heh i really am dead set on emg's , of course if someone can convince me otherwise.. any way sorry to bable on so much im just new trying to figure all this out and fretboards and radius and scale lenght and all is making my head hurt so again if anyone can recommend some books with alot of neck, fretting, radius, locking tremolo explanation i would appreciate it ... i just want a full on here i am born to shred guitar thats what i want to build and dont know how to explain it any diffrently. and yea i have deadblow hammers and brass faced hammers and such also lots of leather mallets a caul looks usefull but a hammer would work i suppose... thanks everyone chuck
  21. yeah scott actually i have the neck profile i want to copy sitting in my closet in its case ive never had a problem with its stability its mahogany with a rosewood fretboard and plays wondrfully to me and afterall its all what feels good i figure i can use acrlyic and make a template with the scribe/washer method and do it up it was really just the bridge that was buggin me after all i guess thanks for the reply chuck
  22. yeah i know the neck pickup would be covered by a 24 fret fingerboard i can move it (the neck pickup) not a big deal as im planning on a material finish so filling in the exsiting hole would not showup, as far as tools i have (well my dad has) every tool i think i would need except a planer ...i got all types of saws, hammers, drills and drill press, router everything you could imagine i have pretty much ..every power tool and hand tool ive seen or read about in the tutorials section i have 24/7 acess to except a electric planer i have hand planes though .. the thing i dont really understand is would the bridge have to be moved and if so why? ( any one got any thing i can read about this ..a link perhaps) i am planning on building my own neck as i said and i can move the neckpickup by filling in the hole with a block of wood and sanding it smooth then rerouting a new hole wherever the fingerboard ends (if this is wrong let me know..) i dont see how it would realy afect the sound that much though and yeah its good to see another lefty were a rare breed it seems and i figure i will probly go with a 16" radius after i did some reading it seems all my fav guitars jackson/ibanez etc use this radius ... also i assume i could put any shape on the back of the neck ? something narrow as possible and shallow is what im after kinda like the backside of a old skinny les paul neck i know ill have to be limited to i think its 1&5/8 nut with for a floyd locking nut ... but that should be about perfect for what i see in my head like i said i got the tools and 2 other guitars this is just somethign i wanna do for fun ... i really really appreciate the answers and help ive gotten on my few questions so far thank you all
  23. I was wondering what benifit (if any) a 20" radius is on a fretboard i have a strat and a ibanez and i mean i can definatley tell the diffrence between them and ive played on a few les pauls i like the feel of the jackson, ibanez(wizard)type neck more than anythign ive played on and i got a new body (same as dimebag darells hamer (no not the washburn the hamer) but no neck i figure i can use the hamer body and build soemthing cool (im a lefty) because i would be able to reach 24 frets if it had that many ... right now it dosent have anythign just a painted hunk of wood so i was thinking i could build my own neck with 24 frets ebony fretboard and such i like playing i geuss "speed guitar" heh, i suck but thats not the point lol i want it to have 24 frets, locking tremolo etc warmoth has the lefty tremolo for cheap enough really i guess what i need to know is would i have to move the tremolo (its allready routed for a floyd rose) or just fiddle with the fretboard position ? and what radius would be best it looks like 14-16 or like 12-16 compound might work out decent i know some are 10-16 and some are just 16 radius i would like to see what you all think fret wire is another question.. i like the feel of lower wide frets like the old gibsons have low action would of course be a requirment uhmm anything else you guys know or can think of ... i would really apprecite ive read most of the neck building tutorials just wondering what your opinions are thanks edit : im wondering about radius cuz i was gonna order some sanding blocks and such whene i order a neckblank and yes i know 24 frets i would have to move the neck pickup.. im not worried about that really just making shure 24 frets woudl work on it is my real concern and what radius would be the best all around
