  1. i know that, but still, if a chizzel can get through wood with ease, why cant it do some super glue.
  2. that sounds liek a finishing question if you ask me. anyways i dont know the answer but hi
  3. ok. now im a little bit clearer. so i plan on binding the body becasue im making a tele type shape. now if i choose not to bind the neck, should the frets just be filed down in place of having them overhang the binding?
  4. well im really not qualified to answer that question... id try but i dont wanna be responsible for the messing up of ure finish. i would think that with a little knife or chizel, you could get the glue off no?
  5. ok the no... was that for do i have to bind the neck... im confused (like the topic title says)
  6. ok well if you typed a little bit more clear i might be able to answer your question better. from what i gather you have some sticky glue on the surface of ure guitar. you can scrape it off with a knife or chizel VERY CARFULLY so that you dont scratch the finish. otherwise, im sure theres some cleaner out there that will do the job.
  7. well as you know most fender guitars have a nut width of 1 5/8" or 1 7/8". and 21 frets. it could be fake, i dont know. i dont think ive ever seen a 23 fret strat but then again, ive never seen alot of things.
  8. ok to start: i did a search on this topic and didnt get any results about this specific topic. the results turned up inlaying and body binding, nothing about this. just to clear my name anyways i was wondering about neck binding. 1.)do i have to bind the neck slash fingerboard. 2.) if so, can i use the same binding i have for the body (i ordered 108 inches, plenty of extra binding) 3.)where should i start the binding? at the neck to bdoy joint? all these questions are active if neck binding even exists...ive never built a guitar before, and "neck binding" isnt in any of the books i ordered, but my current hamer electric guitar appears to have a binding around the neck. thanks for any replies.
  9. ive been reasearching since november 27th 2003 (thanksgiving). its now july 2004 and i just started... ive done my fairshare of reasearch. like i said im sorry and in NO way whatsoever intend to be rude or offend anyone. and like i said ill try to use the search feature more often.
  10. hey, im not asking HOW to cut it, but rather the best method to use. this is my first custom built guitar give me a break
  11. oh right, i have a book that might have those calculations in there... thanks, ill figure all that out tonight. so, once i get the neck taper drawn out, i just sand, or cut the pre radiused, pre slotted fingerboard i ordered down to that size? how would i go about doing that?
  12. ha, i dont like search although i know these "clutter" the forum i find it more effective if the questions are answered to my needs.... ill try to use search more often though. by "neck angle" i mean the neck from the bridget, gets less wide progressivley as it moves towards the nut. example: nut I I I I I I I I I I I I bridge although not that dramatic, thats what i mean. anyways whether or not thats neck taper im not sure. i ordered a hot rod from stew mac. so that can be fitted from the front right? following the standard truss rod installation instructions from the several books i have? if this neck taper you talk about is what im talking about than how dramatic should that angle be? im just very curious i dont wanna mess up.
  13. as i continue my string of question threads for the noob guitar building i come to the neck. when routing a fenderstyle neck shape (tele), is the neck angled, ie does it get smaller as you go from bridge to nut. as i examine my fingerboard, i dont see an angle, thus if this is true would i have to somehow sand the fingerboard down to shape it? if so, how would i go about doing this. secondly, when fitting a truss rod in a fenderstyle neck, is the truss rod picket routed the same way, ie from the front, under the fingerboard. i assume i would make the access cavity at the rescess of the peghead. please correct me if im wrong. thanks in advance
  14. ok i egt it now.... but how do i position them so that theyare in the right place, IE the center of the guitar
  15. so im close to the routing part of my project and i have a few questions. first, i was concerned... i have a bunch of books all of which give depths etc of the routing pockets.... but should i just rout them to the shape of the pickup im using...? i dont know which shape to rout or how big to make it. second, im pretty sure on this one but there is no routing needed for a non-trem bridge right? the bridge mounts directly on the body. third, if one and 2 are correct, than if i am using a tele bridge (pickup frame contained) do i just need to rout within that built in frame? if not, what should id o? thanks in advnace.
  16. i prefer martin koch's "building electric guitars" to melvins book... i own both though, which is a good thing...
  17. thanks for the responses.... i have a wooden template that i used to trace the body shape on, i made it myself from a CAD drawing, but it isnt sufficient for the final project... would that temporary template suffice for sanding.... also, i have a belt sander and a random vibrating sandor... i also have a disc sander drill attatchment... which of these, if any, are best for sanding.
  18. ok, for those of you who read my topic on the template situation, ive gone ahead without them. i cut out my body and its hasnt been smoothed around the sides yet i just have a few questions: 1.) Do i need the templates to start smoothing the edges? 2.) which is the best method to use (routing, spindle sanding etc.). thanks in advance
  19. ugh... it may not matter as much as i think it does, but when i printed out the "template" of the telecaster from turbo cad, it came on 8 sheets of paper, except there is about 1/10 of an inch on all four sides of each sheet thats just white, no ink is printed, therefore, between each sheet of paper there is 2/10's empty space... im cutting that out using a ruler, a pencil and some scissors, but im afraid my cuts wont be straight and the body will come out a fraction of an inch too small... does this matter as much as i think it does?
  20. ok thanks alot, also, turbocad just started working so now im printing out plans for a tele, therefore, i can start, thanks so much guys
  21. ok that sounds easy enough... i guess im just OCDing (if thats a word) cause this is my first custom guitar and iw ant it to come out right. I go back to my grandpas vacation house on wednesday, where hopefully the templates will be waiting. i ordered a pre-radiused, pre-slotted fingerboard, a neck blank, and an ash body blank all from stew mac, so thats all set. i just wish this turbocad program would work so i could get the correct body shape... also, i can have it overnighted, how much binding do you think i need... im not sure how much to order.
  22. well i did that but for somereason turbocad 2.0 2d wont recognize anything... i dunno, probably something with my computer
  23. well im not so sure, is it hippy, or happy? anyways, happy birthday
  24. yes i understand that, but the problem is, how do i know the shape, the routing areas and everything else without the template... i mean, obviously i can try to do it freehand and stuff, but its my first guitar and i dont wanna mess it up
  25. ok heres the whole story: i am at my grandfathers house in upstate ny, (i live in nj). my grandpa builds furniture for a living so he has a woodworking shop which is very nice. anyways, he has 2 houses a vacation house and a normal house, they are about 5 hours apart. i ordered the template delivered to the vacation house, and we just left there yesterday, and wont be going back untill about 2 days before i leave ny. there is no way i can build a guitar in 2 days so as you know im in a bit of a mess... thats it.
