  1. my favorite carve to do is definitely this by far. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0528.jpg this is basically the same thing but deeper.
  2. It's not cedar actually, It's spanish cedar which is basically a species of mahogany.. I've used golden age humbuckers 3 times before, they sound great, and they are good value.
  3. What'd you do to rust the hardware? Is it just old, or did you go through some process?
  4. Definitely with a spoke shave or a rasp. If your inexperienced with spoke shaves use rasps, any one is capable of rasping.
  5. pictures of the hardware, the Spanish cedar for the fretboard inlays, the possible fretboard I'll be using, and the scarf joint. Fretboard http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0773.jpg Hardware Scarf Spanish Cedar inlay material http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0772.jpg
  6. ahh okay, definitely agree with that. I think I'll go with a small white pickguard (i'll cut black and white out and see what looks best.)
  7. ^ That was my plan actually. I'm not going to do the standard SG routes so that I have the option of choosing no pickguard at the end. This is a hard choice. I think it would look a little bland without a pickguard, but with a pickguard I'd be covering up wood.
  8. Thanks for the tips, I glued the blanks together and ordered all of the parts. I ordered nickel parts because I like the look with the spanish cedar top. I'm still debating on weather or not i should use a pickguard, I kind of want to show off the wood.
  9. neck lams not glued together yet. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st.../Picture001.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st.../Picture003.jpg shape routed and sanded.
  10. To seal the deal on the SG shape I cut it out (I don't think I mentioned on this forum I was considering making it a LP.)
  11. heh thats pretty funny. I think I joined this site like midway through my first build if I remember correctly. Thats a pretty good deal I'm definitely gonna order that. I've never really seen tru oil besides in pictures on this site, how does it feel?
  12. ahh okay, I used a waterbased poly before from target coatings. I didn't really get as good of results as i did with acrylic lacquer so I switched back.
  13. thanks for the tip, who's the manufacturer of the tru oil you buy and what is the site?
  14. thanks, Ive been collecting wood recently so i had t ofind something to use it on. I have tons more exactly like it. I just did this today. Also I have a question, is the one pic per post rule gone, I've seen a lot of threads recently with more than one pic per post. If it's not gone ill edit this post.
  15. What exactly is ktm9 and where can i get it, and read about it? Thats a pretty good idea to for the side dots, I think I'm gonna do something similar but with white plastic dust that ill sand down from pickguard blank scrap.
  16. I got bored of not having any builds going on so I decided to start on an SG. I'm pretty much building a standard SG with a curly spanish cedar top curly maple back and a walnut pinstripe in the middle to contrast the two and to add a cool effect with the bevels. It's gonna have a set neck (first time I'm gonna be doing a set neck) and rosewood fingerboard. This one is gonna be a righty (second righty I'll have built.) It's definitely gonna have a true oil finish because 1) lI like the look of tru oil. 2) I want an oil finish to show off the grain 3) I want to try something new. bonus) Its not gonna be as hard to apply as lacquer. I most likely will be selling this thing when it's finished on ebay or to someone locally. Anyway here are some pics of the woods. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSC00384.jpg
  17. I always make templates for everything I route. They make your work look clean and professional, and prevent you from making routing errors. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0338.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0341.jpg
  18. This is a pretty cool project. I wanna do something like this one of these days to make one of my first guitars a better player.
  19. Well, I guess I'll just give this a shot for once... My entry is a semi-hollow body firebird with a curly cherry top and poplar back. The neck is zebrawood with a firebird inlay on the 12th fret. This was just a project I did for fun in about a 2 week span when I had a broken arm. I cant really think of a nickname for it unfortunately .
  20. no idea about the name, but i really like the paint! di you build the body yourself or is that the bc rich body??
  21. masking tape has worked great for me, i do use that reinforced tape on the horns though (I believe its under the masking tape on this picture so its not visible.)
  22. he probably bid like 10 or 20 bucks on it just for the heck of it and thought that he'd definitely be outbid but ended up not being outbid
  23. I really like this! I think you did a great job on it for your first build.
  24. I don't think I've commented on this build on UG, but I love it! I love the rosewood, I hope to one day do something like this (if I have enough rosewood)
  25. I LOVE the look of spanish cedar. Recently I was at the lumber yard and I saw a piece of curly spanish cedar, I bought 2 boards of it (all they had) and decided to make tops and other things with it. It's pretty much exactly like mahogany. Here it is can't wait to use it.
