EJS Posted September 26, 2004 Report Posted September 26, 2004 Hi All! I'm a newbie to guitar finishing and to this site. I always wanted to build a guitar of my own and now I have a chance to. I have a new raw alder body with a new raw maple on maple neck, and I’ve been thinking about a finish for a long time and after reading the tutorial on "how to do a swirl finish", I decided that's the finish that I want for my fist project. I'm a little confused on the type of paint to use on it though. The following is the formula that I was going to follow, but I’m not sure if all the paints are compatible. 1) Deft acrylic lacquer sanding and sealer. 2) Dupli-color acrylic lacquer gray sandable primer. 3) Dupli-color acrylic lacquer white, (for the base color coat). 4) Plasti-kote Odds n Ends oil based enamel, (for the swirl). 5) Plasti-Kote clear acrylic enamel, (for the clear coat). Any help/input would be very appreciated. Like I said, it’s my first project and I want to do it right. Thanks in advance for any help. Quote
bowser Posted September 26, 2004 Report Posted September 26, 2004 (edited) try searching, there have been many, many threads about swirl finishes im sure that you will be able to answer most of your questions by looking in them Edited September 26, 2004 by bowser Quote
Maiden69 Posted September 26, 2004 Report Posted September 26, 2004 here is the tutorial on the main site link for the paint matching try on a scrap piece to see compatability. Quote
Brian Posted September 27, 2004 Report Posted September 27, 2004 Like Maiden69 said do a few test try's first till you get the hang of it before tackling the body, you will be glad you did. Quote
axemannate Posted September 27, 2004 Report Posted September 27, 2004 Well, im lazy, so on my swirls, i just prime, wet sand, prime again, wet sand, and swirl with testors spray enamel. BTW, if you use green, DO NOT USE TESTORS or anything else that you have not tested. I have had nothing but bad luck with greens, and the only kind that really works is Boyd enamels. Quote
EJS Posted September 27, 2004 Author Report Posted September 27, 2004 Thanks eveyone who responded. I'll make sure I do allot of testing before I move to the body. Quote
