westhemann
"there's more than one way to skin a cat" the 5150 is a great amp with great tone.much better than peavey's other stuff.i got to hear one about a month ago and i was impressed. i think me and you may have different definitions for the same concept vh.a paf with extra windings is high output in my book, depending on the extra windings.how is cranking an amp higher to make up for low output pickups any better than a cleaner and better signal from the guitar itself?and the jb you always reccomend is also high output,by my definition.i also consider eddies sound high output.nothing on my amp is cranked to 10. you may have the wrong idea about my philosophy on tone.i am no youngster.i am 31 which,to most people is not considered young, but,as most musicians put out the bulk of their work before 30,maybe the young guys should be respected, since by your own admission eddie put out his best work when he was young.but my sound is based on aggresive metal rythm somewhat similar to sepultura or fear factory so a certain output is necessary.but don't get me wrong i am not one of those guys who play only power chords over and over.my sound is very versatile. i think the main difference in our ideas is that i grew up on old metallica and slayer and you grew up on van halen(i assume based on the multiple candy stripes and frequent mention of eddie.)i appreciate eddie's sound and skill but it is not my style.hopefully you can forgive me for being different. one thing though.if eddie didn't care about his pickups why did he take the time to modify them?i bet he spent years perfecting his tone.why else would it be so distinctive? Speedy McFeely
i know he spent allot of time designing his signature pick-ups with dimarzio, and it said i guitar world a long time ago that he took a long time designing his EBMM guitars, and his 5150's. i think he may not have cared about the pick-ups themselves, but i'd be willing to bet he was picky about how they sounded, who isn't. you've got to love a place where a simple question about the length of the nut on a guitar would open up such a can of worms. vh-guitarstore.com
i get what you say, and the type of music you play fits what you use....that was another side of the coin..... eddie's setup is considered low output...allthough its cranked to peak performance....dont confuse distortion with high output.....it depends on how many windings he had on his pick up if its high out put....back then, i doubt it was...this tone philosophy about low output pick ups comes directly from eddie...thats where i got it....and then i got it.....eddie never did care about what he used pick up wise or the other...as long as he had his marshall....i wouldnt state that if i didnt know it to be true.....up until the ernie ball days, everything was just slapped together with whatever they had....... i recomended the jb once to someone who was looking for a high output balanced pick up......and, i said i dont practice what i preach due to circumstances of playing habits.....i play maybe 2 hours a month!......if im lucky......right now my favorite pick up is the sh-14 from duncan.....allthough, im going to have them design a lower output version of it for my OEM when you start playing through real amps( i dont count the 5150 as one), youll see the difference....allthough for you and what you play, i dunno, randall?......the 5150 can sound passable if you do a lot of tweaking.....the bias is off on all the tubes and there are some resistors that need to be changed.....but basically its a poor rip off of a soldano.....which is why ed still uses his 67 superlead
westhemann
man i consistently screw up my replies.i was almost done and accidentally closed it out.i hate that. anyways you know more about eddie than me. but as far as amps go i am a marshall man right now but i am curious about the rivera knucklehead. westhemann
yeah an amp section would be cool.there is a high end german amp maker which is supposed to be great for what i play but i can't think of the name.it's driving me crazy. vh-guitarstore.com
are you talking about the deizel amp? i wouldnt bother with that...way over priced and really isnt much or the bogner uberschall? thats what i would recomend for you or the vht pittbull......i had a pittbull for awhile, it was fun...but not my cup of tea.....ive owned several different bogners and they are a real nice amp...my second or third choice
DaveK
I agree with Doug! I had a VHT Pit Bull for YEARS...Great amp... But I personally think my Bogner Extacy 101B is THE best amp on the PLANET!!!!
westhemann
yeah bogner uberschall is what i was thinking of.since you reminded me i found some mp3 clips and had a listen.unfortunately it's not tight enough for me.i think i'll have to stick with my marshall until something better comes along.i think i can upgrade to a valvestate soon.see the sound i get is almost industrial in nature.really fear factory is the closest i can come to my sound.i play right at that speed and intensity and through most amps it just gets muddy.i hear dino uses line 6(probably dialed in through an eq). tsl602000
I agree, an amp section would be really cool. Wes, have you ever heard of Koch amps? It's a Dutch brand that's ditributed all over the world. I think they'd suit your music pretty good. Also worth mentioning is Engl, a German amp manufacturer. I was so unsatisfied with all my amps that I decided to build my own. Now, one year after I finished that project, it's still my main amp. I'm thinking of building another one as a back-up or replacement for my TSL60 head for the bigger stages.
