No, it's not a stupid question, it just wasn't clear enough - to answer it, if you remove the cap from a tone pot and replace it with a jumper, you have a volume pot. Since the cap's impedance (that's a fancy word for resistance when applied to an AC signal) gets lower at higher frequencies, it bleeds the highs off to ground while blocking the lows. The tone control can be configured to have no effect on the sound when it's wide open by simply using a no-load tone pot that disconnects completely at the wide open setting. I hope that answers your question, I'm still not sure exactly what you're asking.

Sounds like you are basically talking about disconnecting your tone control. You can sure try it and see what it sounds like as many players have done that from the 1980's on.

It may be too bright, but then it depends on the tone you are wanting. Going to a 1 meg Vol pot might be too bright as well.

BTW, how are the Pearly Gates working out?
