Larry over at Galleryhardwoods.com has some great prices and awesome wood. Also very nice to work with. Responds to emails very quickly in my experience.

If you are wondering what type of woods would be good to use, I would look at alder, ash, and mahogany.

Before deciding on the wood, decide what you the outcome to be. That will go along towards deciding the wood. For instance, if you want a traditional Strat or Tele tone, mahogany is not a good wood to use.

Easiest thing to do is pick up your phone book and look for local wood yards (is that what they call them? :D ) and ask for mahogany, maple, ash and alder. That's the cheapest way to get good wood. Just make sure it's been dried long enough and don't expect to find much figured woods.

i did a web search for exotic wood suppliers (sensis.com.au), and found a really good 1, bloody briliant prices (from memory this guy charged me $16 AUD a lin metre of honduran mahogany), but this guy is in australia, and it takes ages to get from the airport to northgate on a kangaroo lol(we have cars here BTW), so try searching the yellow pages website (easier than manually) for an exotic wood supplier/lumber yard

awesome thank you so much for your help. Gallery Hardwoods says they do custom milling on their website. Does that mean that they will mill a neck thru blank?

Without mentioning ANY names, id just like to offer one piece of advice....

GET PHOTOS OF ALL WOOD BEFORE YOU PAY FOR IT.

Especially if buying from reputable, well known "luthier" wood supply companies.

I second that. I always did that and what some "reputable" companies sent me as pictures of "aaaa++++++++" :D wood was so ugly it hurt my eyes. Before paying a hefty price and realizing the rip-off too late it is way better to ask for pictures.
