andyruney
My guitar needs a new volume pot and tone pot. I looked into getting it fixed professionally, but the labor is costly. I've seen several pots on the internet and some brand names like gibson and fender. I need 500k. I'd like to know some opinions on the different brands. Jehle
You could get one with the Fender or Gibson brand name, but I fear that you may be paying for just that... A NAME. I've used some MightyMite pots before and have been really happy with them. They tend to be fairly cheap too. For links, I would try looking here... http://www.universaljems.com/ http://www.stewmac.com/ http://www.dancingdragonguitars.com/ http://www.smallbearelec.com/ There's tons more, but that will get you started. daniboy
cts or cge pots. avoid mini-pots like the plague. you will want one with audio taper. also, pot values are pretty erratic. i actually have a 500k pot measured at 360k. i can direct you to some places where you can get cts pots. they are known to measure their pots before sending them out. dani
lovekraft
Fender sells CTS pots under their imprint (and at a higher price) - I'm sure Gibson has some similar arrangement. Personally, I haven't noted any audible difference between CTS and the cheaper pots sold by Allparts, WD, etc. If you want the (arguably) absolute best, do a search for Alps Blue Velvet, but be aware that you won't be able to hear the difference between a $50.00 pot and a $5.00 pot in your guitar (unless you're Eric Johnson). Keep in mind that since pots are generally manufactured with a +/-20% tolerance, anything between 400K and 625K is within spec, and I seriously doubt that anybody can hear the difference there, either. Any pot that's sturdily built and rotates smoothly is probably more than up to the task. If it wiggles, binds or is hard to turn, send it back.
