Checkered Transformation

Recommended Posts

looks very nice. My girlfriend has a thing for black and white checkerboards.

Are you planning on discussing how to do a checkerboard finish, step by step and all?

oki, thnx for the comments... all i know for sure is that this design looks a whole lot better than the plain blue it had...

oki, first i started with a basic Squier Tele, my first guitar eva.... i got it when i was 12, now im 15 and i believe that my gutar needed to live up to my style... I also at the time had a Ibanez RG 320FM which was a grey flame top so maybe that may hint off my 'style'.

For anyone who knows blink 182, they would recognize the pick guard... yes i did paint it....

Well after a while of playing a hillbilly lookin tele, i decided a change was needed so using MS Paint i designed a layout i liked...

I looked at it and fell in love, (Im a fan of checkers ... shoe laces, belt, book bag) so i began on my journey of "The Guitar thing that was so amazing!"

So i began dismantling the ugly 170 dollar guitar...

Now with all that out of the way, i marked the wires of course to remember which lined up to which humbucker...

Now i needed to clean up the guitar... I first used some paint stripper.... this only took off the blue coat to reveal a Red paint which was hard as rock and didnt even come off... My father informed me it was a plastic like paint so i couldnt get that off... after sanding and sanding, i primed it with a satin white... (EDIT - And i used elmers wall filler to fill in the screw holes from the stupid pick guard..)

After thAT i cut about 40 - 50 (felt like a hundred) 1x1" pieces of tape and carefully placed it over the white base paint... from there when it was all layed out, i sprayed about 3 coats of black on. After it dried, i used a pen knife and peeled away the tape..

Since i was lazy, i just flipped the guitar over and sprayed almost a sunburst style on it, and sprayed about 5 gloss coats....

Now all i had to do was put the wires back through and solder them... this was probly the hardest part... the wires came up to short at the humbuckers so i had to pull em as far as they could go...this put some major strain on my hands..

Now that i was finished, it was time to use my guitar for wat guitars were made to do....

The Finished product....

It was great fun and i plan to look around this site to see some more great ideas... my next progect, i want to build a guitar from wood....something a little more chalenging...

Amazing job. Good idea about the chess :D. Good idea about the burst on the back. I totally think that's better then just a black or white, or checker. It adds a whole new thing.
