daveq Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 I have a body made from two pieces of Alder. I haven't routed any cavities yet but I am noticing that there are some significant pores or tiny holes in the grain on the side that will have the bridge mounted (the face of the guitar). My question is: if anyone here has experience with Alder - is this normal? Will I need to fill the pores or will this go away with finish sanding? If so, how bad is it to use the grain filler stuff? The thing that scares me is that I didn't notice this back when I shaped the body a few weeks ago. It seems like this may have happened recently. Thanks, Dave Quote
lovekraft Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Alder shouldn't need filling. Sounds like more sanding is in order. Take it to about 320 or 400 grit and it should be fine for sealer or primer. Prep is everything. Quote
Scott Rosenberger Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Alder sometimes has very small knots which usually aren't a problem, I would fill the grain personally because after a while the finish tends to settle into the grain of Alder Bodied Guitars Quote
