chunkielad
I'm working on acustom at the mo and have come accross a question in the neck area. I've posted two pics - is the 1st one OK? Will I have any strength issues or do i need to do a full heel and just trim the depth like in pic 2? Also are 3 screws enough in this layout? Just for reference the neck is a strat copy off ebay (unknown wood) and thebodu will be mahogany. The body is 40 mm thick - is there a minimum thickness to the heel so I'll get decent strength? What's the min you'd take it to? http://signworks.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Stor...20Joint%202.jpg Edited September 22, 2005 by chunkielad
Marzocchi705
Id go with the second, but you could always do a AANJ.
erikbojerik
I'd go with 4 bolts and shape the heel so that it gets thinner on the treble side. You can always trim the bolts to whatever length. I did this on a travel guitar, I used threaded inserts in the neck and machine screws for the bolts, and I recessed the bolt heads into the heel wood so that they were barely sticking out. Gemleggat
Depends how far the neck goes into the body. Nothing to say the 2 of the bolts can't go as far in as under the neck pickup or between the 2 pickups.

What sort of depth are we looking at for the heel. I want to make it as thin as possible i.e. an AANJ.
Gemleggat
The heel needs to be about 20-25 mm (inc fingerboard) thick with body lip/ bit being about 20mm if you want stability.Have you seen the back of an Ibanez AANJ close up Chunkielad? If I can get away with the body section (where the heel fits) being 20mm I think I can sort something quite nice - my timber is 40mm thick and the neck gets recessed 19mm so just about right. They need not be an exact replica to be functional, the idea is to give you a better access to the higher frets.

chunkielad
Here is a pic of an Ibanez AANJ. ← That looks like it's cracked mate - is that because of the AANJ being too thin or something? How thin can the AANJ go?
marksound
It is cracked. It's also a very (in)famous guitar, if you didn't notice the URL. http://www.vai.com/Machines/guitarpages/EV...ody_frLRG01.jpg

Is the thickness an issue though?
Maiden69
Nope, but most of the ibanez I have seen have the paint cracked there too, and I say paint because most are just that! The finish that cracks right on the joint area. Look here at the end of the page.
