mynamesucks
After about two hours of searching this forum and the internet im literally at my wits end im building an SG from mahogany and i want to finish it very similar to this i presume this is mahogany by looking at the grain pattern. My fist question to you would be how can i replicate this finish? it looks to me as if its had a black/walnut grain filler and then stained green, im not to sure. secondly, where in gods name can i get the stain dye whatever i need in the uk? the only stains ive found are the wrong colour or are a two in one waterbased wax finish which isnt what i want as i want to clear it. ordering from the states is out of the question as i need it by the end of the week i thank you very very much if you can help me with this as i am at a bit of a loss, the only other thing i can think of is mixing blue and yellow. al heeley
You can try John Myland or Rustins - both are london-based paint and woodstain manufacturers in the older traditional sense. A lot of DIY outlets carry their products. Mylands make a lot of high end waxes/french polish stiuff as well as stains. Another hint is to look on the specialist forums dealing with furniture manufacture - a lot of similarities in nicely finishing good pieces of wood. mynamesucks
cheers for the links, i gave rustins a look but they were pretty poor. mylands look like they might have jsut the thing. on another note my mum suggested green ink, lo and behold it actually looks good, and the colour is a near match, i now need to see if permanent inks are suitable. ibreakemineedtobuildem
That looks like the finish on my first guitar. That looks like the sample pic I took Try Aniline dyes.I mixed yellow and blue.I stained it,sanded it back to darken grain. Then filled grain with clear epoxy and sanded that back. Then stain again with yellow blue mix.My last coat was pure blue and it came out the exact color in your pic. Don't forget to test on scrap

al heeley
Not easy to find in the uk, there's a few US sites selling 'aniline' wood dyes (chemically they are no longer really 'alinile'; its a generic term that has grown up and stuck since they first started tanning leather out of coal extracts). I can suggest a good place to start- though not ready-to use in bottles on a DIY shelf, get in touch with the good people at Keystone Europe, they are based on Leeds Road in Huddersfield. They may be able to help point you in the right direction. Good luck!
Maiden69
I don't think that the finish there is a dye. I tried to dye mahogany and even thought it takes dye, the results are not that bright (and Ibleached my body). I will suggest that you bleach the mahogany, grain fill with black, then use a toned clear coat to finish the guitar.
ibreakemineedtobuildem
Where did you get that pic?I'm sure that is my sample pic.
al heeley
its the green sample from prs guitars (right click on image, look at properties). I'd be interested to know more about bleaching, Maiden, if you can point me in the right direction. Batfink
Chestnut spirit stains To name but one - c'mon there's a ton of this gear available in the UK - for once ! On a side line - are you sure that's actually a dye and not a tinted clear ? jem OH, and no offence but that Mylands stuff is water based and, in my humble opinion, a wee bit crap compared to the spirit based stuff. wwood
Their red, yellow and greens are also soluble in Methylated spirit too. wwood
Batfink
Their red, yellow and greens are also soluble in Methylated spirit too. wwood Interesting to know but i'd still stick to dedicated spirit stains in the first place.
