matttheguy
Aye, that's what it's going to take. I should have sanded those dang runs down the moment that first coat dried. What the heck was I thinking?!

matttheguy
Well, this is my first time inlaying, and I have to say, I'm pretty surprised by how well it turned out. I used my set of x-acto knives to do the entire thing, and the inlays fit so well that it's a hard time for me to get them back out. There was only one place where I slipped with the knife, but it's really not noticeable. Heck, for a first guitar, I'm happy to have those little nicks! Jester
We had those same sets for sale at work a while ago. 2 euros per set. I got 2 but I should have bought like 6. Great set. And the inlays are looking great! Are they glued? I'll be attempting my first real inlay in a while too.

matttheguy
It still needs a lot of work before I can do that, but I'll be sure to get it done as soon as possible! It's a little plain, but it's still an LP.
matttheguy
All done!
wwwdotcomdotnet
wow, nicely done. exactly how did you do the inlay with the exacto knives? i can see how you could do the outlines of the inlays, but how did you scoop out the fretboard so the inlay could actually sit level with the fretboard? Prostheta
I guess it would have been with the two flat ended blades like a chisel - is that right, Matt?
erikbojerik
Where was I while this was being built? Very nice work Matt! I love lemon-drop Les Pauls and yours has that vibe. Very nice! Yeah, you gotta knock down those runs as they appear, or they will torment you later. What are you using for a clear coat?
matttheguy
Indeed. I'll get the numbers of the blades to you soon. Normal blade for outlining and the big flat blade for scooping out the fatter inlays and the smaller flat blade for the skinny upper-fret inlays. It took a lot of work, but it also saved money for a hobbyist builder. Erik, I refinished the entire thing, so it's all smooth now. I'm using the brushing varnish from Stewmac with alcohol based dyes from LMI. The top is amber dye mixed with a tad bit of yellow to brighten it a bit and the backs and sides are dark mixes of the red. Prostheta
I think I might invest in an Xacto kit now you've shown that the results are worth it Matt! I'm going to inlay a board with ES335 style inlays, and straight lines would be easier to achieve with a rule and a knife!
matttheguy
I got that kit for something like 5 dollars. Make sure to get spare blades, though, they snap easy. They are also very cheap.
