Ford
I was curious to see if anybody knew the woods Rickenbacker used in their basses, more specifically, the 4001 series. I have one, I love the way the neck plays and feels, and I want to try and incorporate that into a guitar project. I'm fairly sure the fretboard was Bubinga, its a 3 piece, and a neck through. But thats the extent of what I know. Thanks! _Ford
Roli
Almost all Ric's are made of maple, and this description says the fretboard is rosewood.
Ford
"This dual pickup version of the model 4000, the legendary 4001S, is the forerunner of the model 4001 we know today." 4001S is a different insturment from the 4001, though I do believe the neck is still mostly maple, there is a darker strip down the center (a 3 piece). The frettboard could be rosewood after all, but I've heard Bubinga, as well as Pao Ferro. Lots of conflicting info! Fun fun fun! _Ford
Ford
Ok, I checked out the rest of that site (thanks for the link), and yeah, 4001 is rosewood, you're right. What I want to know is why those rosewood boards look so much lighter with more red and yellow tones then the rosewood on just about any other insturment (that I've seen anyhow)? Perhaps a different kind or rosewood, or some kind of finishing? _Ford
krazyderek
indian rosewood is the most common and it's darker, Brazillian rosewood is quite a bit lighter in colour, and costs a couple bucks more i beleive.
Jehle
In the LMII catalog, there's a bunch of different flavors of rose wood. I thought that Pau Ferro was becoming a more affordable (plentiful) version of rosewood. It could be anything.

Oh yea, sorry I put the wrong link but I'm glad you've found what you're looking for.
