NickCormier
Is this possible to do?? Anyone have pictures of stained MOP? Gives me good idea for a maple fretboard inlay.. Stained blue MOP would look amazing on that heh
Batfink
I've seen stained laminates but can't remember ever seeing stained shell slabs. I have a feeling that the stained lamintaes actually have the epoxy (or whatever it's encapsulated in) dyed but as i've never used it can't really be sure. Setch
Pearl doesn't stain well, since it's non porous. You can tint it by applying a transparent colour over the top, but this isn't ideal for inlay, since you'll likely sand it away when you level the inlay. Youcould try: 1.Polish the pearl to a high shine. 2.Tint it with coloured clear. 3.Inlay it a little below the surface of the inlay field. 4.Flood the cavity with clear epoxy and CA and then level and polish this. This will require feindishly good routing, since you won't be able to use any coloured filler to conceal gaps.
Batfink
Just had a mince round the suppliers section and Inlay USA list tinted laminates although as i said, i've never used it so can't comment - i pressume recon stone isn't reflective enough for what you had in mind ? Southpa
The inlays on my custom built SG are dyed abalone. http://img401.imageshack.us/my.php?image=reality0055ay.jpg They were a solid blue but you can see the result after sanding. Thats the effect I was going for anyway.
NickCormier
well I actually seen some recon stone that might be cool.. I dunno, we'll see =] http://www.masecraftsupply.com/html/recon_stones.html The first chunk, theres one near the bottom that says "Azurlite chrysocolla" Which might be cool on Maple fretboards.. anyone think it would? verhoevenc
Inlay USA's stuff= ****. Got a sample package from them and was thoroughly disappointed. They also lie about products to make you buy their's and are dishonest and untrustworthy. Chris
